When I started playing last november, there were 3 adventures and 2 expansions. So the 3 adventures cost $60, which is pretty reasonable. A year from now, there's going to be 5 expansions (in standard). If there were 5 expansions when I started, I would've just said this game sucks and not played it. Who's going to want to spend $250 buying expansion packs and not even get all the cards from them?
For existing players it's not so bad since you get packs as you go along, but in a year it's going to be overwhelming for any new player to start the game.
