So, I've never bought packs with coins before. Currently I have no coins, but am considering maybe getting some. I have HS downloaded through the Appstore, and when I go to the shop I see no option to purchase w/ Amazon coins. Is this something that will only show if I have coins available?
I can only speak with any certainty for the way it works on a Kindle device (although I believe it works the same way on any Android device, as long as you downloaded Hearthstone from the Amazon Appstore). When you go to checkout you'll be presented with a pop-up that asks if you would like to complete the purchase using your coins or your primary payment method. So what you're seeing sounds exactly right. You won't see the option until you're mid-purchase.
By the way, once you buy packs this way, you'll see it's the only way to go. You're always going to save at least 10% or so, plus get around 20% of your coins back after the purchase. When they run specials on the price of the coins themselves you can end up saving more than 40%, all told. Buying packs any other way really doesn't make any sense, considering you can also do this directly on Amazon.com no matter what device you use.
A coin is equal in value to a penny. The savings come from the upfront discount and the rebate. For example, right now you can get 2500 coins for $23.00. Then you buy 15 packs for 1999 coins. You still have 500 coins left, plus you'll get 400 back. You end up with 15 packs and $9.00 in coins.
You can increase the savings by buying more coins (the more you buy, the higher the discount). You can also maximize further by using the returned coins on packs. If you do a little math beforehand, you can figure out the sweet spot for you.

Thanks. How many coins does a pack cost?
