I have a great passion towards Hearthstone as many of you and I must say, I find it visually quite pleasing too. However, I don't feel like the templates they've been using for the cards are leveling up with the rest of the UI. Even though, they're matching with the general theme, they look a bit outdated and cartonish in comparison to the rest of the game. They fail to emphasize the beauty of artworks in their full capacity. Therefore, I thought I could bring a bit more spark to those card templates and polish them for your eyes. My goal was to make them more gravitating and eye-catching without making any drastic changes. Just minor updates, nothing to harm the look and feel of the game. I also do not postulate such update bringing any extra load neither to the game nor to your devices.
I hope you'll enjoy them. Depending on the feedback and interest it will gain, this project will include Common, Spell, Death Knight and Weapon cards too.
I like the design, perhaps the highlights are a little bit too strong, but I question whether it should just be on legendary. I was thinking cards would benefit from randomized texture changes, like slightly torn or more tidy text boxes, or less ripped up or more ripped up borders as alternate textures.
I like your designs, but I feel that this is a deliberate design choice by Blizzard - they want people to pay for Golden cards, if they want more visual bling.
I kind of agree with what has been said, I like it BUT it might be too bright, thining the line between normal and golden and making it slightly too aggressive to the eye maybe.
Honestly, I think bumping up the contrast and adding some light ripples is meh and looks forced. From a design perspective it distracts from the actual artwork and is totally unnecessary, the artwork should be the focus not the boarder. Think of the boarder of the card like the background on a webpage, it's only the vessel, it should not detract from the relevant content. When you make elements in art compete, well sure they look pretty, the final product gets muddied.
The game has evolved but the style isn't supposed to be modern or have everything look new and shiny. I feel these changes are a departure from the overall theme of the game and don't really fit the art at all.
Dark, weathered and muted is just fine for card boarders, it's dungeon based fantasy afterall, let the art speak for itself.
OP, applying your approach to the art, not the card boarder, might be better. I've personally noticed a trend each release that the golden vs normal cards of the same are getting further and further apart, like the normals are being purposefully muted and lack detail compared to their golden counterparts. Demonic Project is a perfect example of this. However, Blizzard made a decision to do this obviously. You don't make subpar base card art unless you're trying to motivate people to get the better looking version.
I personally dont rly like these changes, dont get me wrong, it doesnt look that bad, but it does feel like it takes attention away from the art and card itself, as said already.
You seem to know your way around photoshop, so mby your efforts would be better spent on creating some new cool custom border(s) rather than trying to improve the existing ones. Just a thought ;-)
People play on their phones, the cards are much smaller so it really doesn't matter to most people I don't think. Gold cards are all that look cool to me and some of those are disappointing even so meh. I don't play for the art, I could google wow art if thats what I was looking for.
I would rather see Blizzard use better artwork from start. Look at the base set, and to the set previous to WOG: almost every card had beautiful artwork drawn by top quality artists. Then with WOG things started to get lazy: each expansion had worse artwork and this last one as some absolutely abysmal pictures. Compare the following COMMON cards, for example:
with all the money they're making I would expect at least some effort...
I don't know what you're on about. The artwork has always been one of the best things in this game, and the artwork for Bronze Gatekeeper is no exception.
because of shadow at the center (where the card text is) — your cards seems to be curved, but other lines are not, that makes me feel the cognitive dissonance. But the idea of making emphasis on details is good, even some streamers are confusing where is the mage or shaman card ))))
Thanks for all of the replies. I read them all carefully and kept them in mind while working on the second version.
Things to keep in consideration:
1. Hearthstone Team might be too protective on the card design towards complex drastic change offers. Even though I'm planning to come up with a design created completely from scratch, I think the Hearthstone team might get convinced more easily to adopt a revamped card desing instead of introducing completely new design.
2. It's possible to increase the area spared for the artworks by 15 per cent even right now. But, it may increase the file size per images and their load on the game unreasonably. We shouldn't forget that every design update has to include the wild format too. HS updates were taking around 800MBs 2 years ago while they take around 1.3 GBs now.
3. The cards are looking so flattened and cartonish right now. It's hard to say they're complementary to the rest of the game. Especially the poor frame desin of all class cards makes the card artworks look out of place. My primary goal has been to give them more volume and slick look.
4. Golden card frames are also outdated and can be a lot better.

Constructive criticism is always welcome.

I think your changes shift the attention too much away from the artwork and the card text, which should be the center of attention in my opinion.

However I think you're onto something good.

I definitely think Blizz should revamp the interface and side details.
I always felt that the whole interface is clunky. I wish something much more neat.
Personally i don't mind your light effect. I find it better than current. Just not on textbox, that should stay flat.
I don't know what you're on about. The artwork has always been one of the best things in this game, and the artwork for Bronze Gatekeeper is no exception.

There is a section on the General Discussion Forum about the Ugliest Cards so you should check that up before wondering which card has bad art :D
Why is the rum gone?

I for one really like how you designed it! it looks super awesome
v.2 awesome ! :)
I like your designs a lot! Looks much more polished and brighter now. Keep it up, man :)
My thought on it all is this: if the basic ones now look fantastic, what will the golden ones look like?
