It's time to bring back Design Duels. For those who have not seen any of the previous threads, these Design Duels are always a 1v1 design competition between two anonymous players. The two competitors don't even know each other. For those who like to compete in one of these, simply send me a PM and I will set you up for a match. Lately I have been trying to do 2 duels at the same time, one New Comer Design Duel (for those who have not done a design duel before) and a Veteran Design Duel. Anyone entering duels for the first time is automatically a New Comer, but once you've completed your first New Comer match you're bumped into veteran status. If you are interested in joining a duel, just send me a PM and I will add you to the queue. Now for New Comer Design Duel #16:
Prompt: Design one beast, one dragon, and one murloc card. They all must be minions
Examples: There's way too many to list
Entry #1: crazyherbz Entry #2: Giz4Gamer (Winner)
1) 2)
1) 2)
1) 2)
As always, comment below and vote above!
EXTREMELY close match. The vote bar kept bouncing between bother players as it climbed up to the final scoring. Congratulations to our winner, Giz4Gamer!
Ooh, this is an interesting one. On one hand, it's kinda cool how #1 tried to go for a Menagerie feel, but I'm not sure I like the cards in themselves (the art seems kinda off for both the Monkey and the Murloc).
#2 is slightly less 'creative', but all the cards are solid and well-made, with good art as well. I feel like I probably like #2 a bit more here.
I'm really fond of #1. It has a cohesive theme, while #2 is a bit more all over the place. The condition is also a reference to each of the tribes, which is really cool.
I'm really loving #1- I think that if they'd wanted to actually make tri-tribal decks a thing, these would be a very good way to promote it. I'm also liking the 'curious' flavor, which totally makes sense with the effect. I just wish Curious Murloc said 'whenever you play a Beast or Dragon...', so that Curious Murloc into Unleash the Hounds wasn't broken.
#2 is done pretty well, but none of the effects are particularly interesting... The Beast is nearly Vanilla (and perhaps worse than Maexxna), and then we have a conditional removal and a conditional AOE. It's not that they're bad cards, just that there's nothing... new.
Today in my free brawl pack I got Barongeddon, then I had a cup of fresh green tea. As a result of that, I think Priest is OP because my keyboard is not a mechanical one. I hope Blizzard will address this issue.
Note: I accidentally posted one card incorrectly. Madden Murloc has been replaced with Maddened Murloc. Nothing different except the name, which I should have put up when I made the thread in the first place.
Hmm quite a tough one this week, In my opinion #1 wins the flavour battle/ creativity battle but I feel like #2's cards are better made/balanced and fit into the game as they are now. Maybe the Scorpid is abit of an underwhelming entry but other than that Im at like a 50/50 on who to choose right now. I'll wait for now but im leaning towards #1 due to the flavour being nicer and the cards being more interesting. :/ But i like #2 as well.
Normally I don't comment on the actual votes during the voting process, but this is probably the highest voter turnout as of yet, so thank you everyone for coming in and voting.
This is a tough one. I think that there are upsides and downsides for both.
I think Entry #1 is a very cool take on something I think a lot of us would have liked to see, a truly broad Zoo style deck. I also think that its handled in a pretty cool way. That said, the design as a whole is very linear. You only had to come up with one idea and carry it across 3 cards. All three being neutral also means they are more broad use. However, I don't really like the art direction. Its fine art, none of it is sloppy or ugly, but it doesn't fit the Warcraft aesthetic.
Entry #2 I think went into a very basic set of ideas. Making cards that fit classes that could use them. The Hunter Scorpid is a great card, though yes, its not like we've never seen it. That leaves the design a bit bland, but the art and more controlling aspect instead of an aggro aspect makes me happy with it. The Murloc is a bit weak IMO. I know a card like Gormok the Impaler is a Legendary, and 4 damage doesn't destroy every minion, but he can also deal face damage, and doesn't require a very specific minion type. That said, I like the overall design, it fits not only Warlock, but Murloc well. The final card is a touch on the strong side, but its not oppressive and I think Mage never got a fair shake with the Dragon thing. The art is much more in line across the board here as well.
In the end I think its very close to a toss up, but I gave the nod to Entry #2. The first card wasn't impressive, but I really like the final 2 designs entries, and the implications they could have brought to their classes/races.

To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women.
I vote for 1 because it embraces the menagerie theme. 2 has good cards, probably more useful, but I think they are a little op which seems like an easy way to get votes.

I think Entry #2 cards are actually sub-par. And OP cards aren't a good way to get votes on this forum.
Also, Entry #2 just generally seem convoluted in terms of theme, so I went with #1.
tl;dr voting for entry #2, like it a bit more overall.
I like most of the artwork, except for the monkey, looks weird to me idk. I too feel the names of the entry #1 are lazily made :S Also, on the topic of naming cards, Flame Dragon could've been Flame (or Fire) Drake imo, sounds better to me at least :P
I like Scorpid, even if it's not a novelty, as others have said already - the destroy a minion feels right on those poisonous types of animals. Flame Dragon seems balanced alright to me, and I kinda like it wants to push Mage towards more Dragon synergy, so that's a nice one too. Maddened Murloc (so glad it wasn't Madden Murloc after all, phew xD) seems weird, while Warlock has some Murloc history, would it really be needed :S
Entry #1 cards are fine but I don't really like that they are all too similar in effect, idk, feels too repetitive to me. I'm also a bit worried about Curious Murloc's strength, seems a very good starting minion, you have to mulligan for a 2-drop Beast or Dragon and you have a guaranteed turn 3 play...don't know, it's kinda hard to judge it without the ability to test it out.
4 hours left and there are a LOT of votes! Easily the most number of voters for any of these duels. Thank you everyone who popped in to give a vote one way or the other.

Aww so close! Well done Giz4Gamer. Looking through the comments I'm glad people liked my theme but I agree that it lacked that little bit of polish. Curious Murloc may be a little strong balance wise. Thanks to everyone who voted!
It is absolutely a new record! I loved logging in and checking the votes because it honestly kept changing. I think the highest one set got over the other was by 5 votes, but it kept fluctuating like crazy between both competitors to the point that I couldn't guess who would win.

Why Rogue is my favourite class:
My submission for this week's card design competition.
I'm really fond of #1. It has a cohesive theme, while #2 is a bit more all over the place. The condition is also a reference to each of the tribes, which is really cool.
Explosive Shot => Meteor
Power Word: Tentacles => Spikeridged Steed

Lots of votes but not a lot of criticism of the cards.

I'm glad Madden Murloc was a mistake hahah...gonna give my thoughts on the cards later today
