I started to see a TON of them around rank 4-5, even before the expansion hit. The whole she-bang with 2 Academic Espionage, Blink Fox and Valeera for double of them.
I was always a fan of this deck, but I never got it to work and had around 47% win rate with it.
Is there a version of it that is actually useful, or are people just playing it for fun?
I love the deck, too, but it is, by it's very nature, horribly inconsistent. For every match that I draw multiple 1 mana Mind Controls and Obsidian Statues, there's at least one where I draw a bunch of Iron Hides I would have thought that the only way to get more consistency is to water down the burgle aspect, which is what makes it fun. You just end up with tempo rogue with an Academic Espionage thrown in.
I played a version that was a control deck and only used 1 Espionage and I went exactly 50% over 200 games. I didn't see any of the new cards fit into it and it still has the usual issues going against it. Mirrors sucks unless vs a bad Miracle player and you need specific answers in specific matchups to stand a chance.
On top of that, what also makes me dislike Espionage and probably why some more are being played right now, is the fact that it is very polarizing and extremely potent vs Control or anything else on the slow side.
ikr whenever i'm playing wild reno mage i'd usually prefer to see Baku when facing a rogue than a shinyfinder or an espionage, mylast match agains espionage with my Patron warrior was, turn 1 prep espionage, turn 2 Varian Wrynn, turn 3 Varian Wrynn, i literally lost on the spot, not to mention that each varian got at least 2 creatures, on the field
Kinda surprising you're seeing that now since it doesn't seem like the new expansion brought any new tools to that deck. Could be just greedy decks taking advantage of the fact everyone is trying out new things.

I eat Kingsbane rogues for breakfast.
I'd have laugh so hard if the OP had the same title but the text just said ".... no".
I digged out my old deck that did sit at about 50% and modified it with spirit of the shark. I thought it´s clunky but it did win ....
