I recently acquired Edwin VanCleef to finish my Tempo Rogue deck, but I'm struggling with figuring out how to use him, so I would like some general advice on the matter, specifically:
What opportunities are best for playing him?
What situations are worst for playing him? Are there any specific cards I should be looking to play before him?
About how big a combo is considered good for this card?
If you've got him in your starting hand going 2nd, keep him and coin on turn 2 for an easy 4/4. Otherwise aim to get him to at least a 6/6, if you haven't already used cards like backstab and prep then use them to chain a combo. Only situations where it isn't good to play him are when you know your opponent has a silence in hand or more specifically if its a priest and he hasn't used his shadow word deaths yet.
But yeah tldr play him as soon as possible and make him as big as you want unless you know your opponent has easy removal.
Hey I had some trouble too but its best to learn yourself. Here are some tips.
First it totally depends on your deck and the type of deck your playing. Most people play spell breaker so it would be better to bait them out before playing Edwin. If your playing Tempo Rogue, I'd say play as you would normally until you can solidly play around 4-7 cards on that turn including Edwin. Some combos would be like double backstab, S1:7 Agent with the combo, a firefly, and south sea deck hand into Edwin. The backstabs and Agent should help clear the board while the firefly and and deckhand are just fillers. With Edwin you always have to adapt, and slightly set up for him but don't over commit.
A mistake a lot of people make is make a humongous set up for him. I used to and this can sometimes work and usually screw you over. You want to "flow" into it, if that makes sense. Practice with him and seeing how big you need him to be. He doesn't always have to be a 16/16, or higher. an 8/8, or 10/10 is perfectly fine in most scenerios. (16/16 is pretty cool to pull of though, lol)
Also like before you want to bait out his removal so like turn 5 isn't great. Plus your playing Tempo Rogue so its going to be hard. Just outplay him. Worst classes to play are against mage or priest. Priest might not have much removal, but they have a lot of silence. Watch out for that. Mage has just got a shit ton of spells, nothing you can do about it.
To add to the people above me, who were spot on, I'll add that occasionally the correct move is to go all in. Like they said, it's match-up dependent. Against Zoolock it was a common strategy because they never used to play an answer to a big early Edwin. It could hit them in the face a couple of times before they could do anything about it. But it's also important to take chances against decks you aren't favored against. Sometimes a big Edwin turn just falls into your lap. Yes, that deck that's favored against you might have the answer, but if you give them time they definitely will have the answer. If they don't have the answer early, you can sometimes steal a win from a deck that's hard to beat.
