My personal theory is that Burgle was originally supposed to give you class SPELLS only just like Nefarian. Burgle was released one expansion after Nefarian, so it makes sense. Also, the Valeera Tavern Brawl (where she stole just spells from other classes) also adds to the theory. However, Rogue is known to be the class the uses the most spells (an average Rogue decks usually runs 15-20 spells, more than all other classes), and Blizzard doesn't like that, so they changed Burgle to make it also steal minions and weapons. That diluted the RNG pool of the mechanic, effectively killing any potential of it being competitive. Such a shame really.
The fact that Lilian was even printed and only applies to spells in hand confirms that. Blizzard wants to make the mechanic more competitive, but they still don't want Rogue to keep using a lot of spells, so they attached that to a legendary minion (only 1 of in a deck) and only applies to cards in hand (limits the amounts of spells received).
So that makes me wonder if the mechanic wasn't changed in first place, would Burgle Rogue be competitive? What do you guys think?
No, because Rogue spells are good in Rogue for Tempo swings, being cheap and effective.
Other classes give you more expensive spells in average (except maybe Paladin?).
The problem of Burgle is that the RNG is not mitigated, except for debatable combos that happen when the game is generally sealed anyway. If ethereal peddler was cheaper, maybe...
Now, with Lilian, it's the same problem. EXCEPT if you generate coins and spare parts from mechs (in Wild). That way you have EXTRA spells that are still useful to you as Miracle, but that can be converted into value spells when needed.
But I seriously doubt Lilian can make the Burgle archetype consistent.
That's an interesting theory. Regarding the competitiveness of Burgle though, I honestly think that the card was more powerful in it's original conception, this dilution, that you speak of, actually goes the other way around. Usually the minions and weapons off burgle were much more impactful than the spells of another class.
This is an interesting idea. It would narrow the options by so much and would give rogue easier access to board clears and healing in a lot of match ups. I don't agree that Lillian confirms that spells only was an original intention, but its cool thinking of how much that would effect the mechanic.
Yeah, but the pool is too diluted and it's getting diluted more and more. I think they gave up on the idea of spells only since players would use them solely for cycling in Miracle archetypes (and using the good ones for burn), discouraging them for exploring anything else. Unfortunately, support for that "anything else" is very bad right now, the only supportive card being too expensive Ethereal Peddler.
