Ignoring all the flaming from pretty much the entire hearthstone community, I think quest rogue is not as overpowered as people think due to inconsistency, but, most importantly, it feels really fun to play and is actually quite the dificult deck to master. Also, it's the only legendary I got from new packs so yeah :P
That aside, I've been testing plenty of different versions of the deck and have had no success in determining the top ones. No backstab? No eviscerate? Vanish? Bluegills? Coldlights? There are so many already! I would love to hear which ones you guys think are the best/most interesting variants. Thanks!

Better to catch one early than having two of them flying!
It's really not about best. Certain cards are better in certain matchups.
That is true, and exactly why I started trying out new versions! Mine got too slow for my ladder, which is full of midrange hunters hungry for a nice quest rogue meal. Think of this as a cry for help haha

Vanish + Wisp is my favorite. 0 mana better than 1 mana, flame elementals suck imo. And vanish is pretty much a staple, non-vanish variants are bad
That's quite curious, I've always seen the wisp versions as kind of a joke (how can you take it seriously xD). But if you say it actually works, I'll try it!

I got both Patches the Pirate and The Caverns Below from packs, so I started out with Blizzard's recipe list, The Dig, before trying out some other versions. Blizzard's list lacks Youthful Brewmaster, so there is plenty of room for improvement. I wanted Thistle Tea to be good, but it costs too much, so many of the following lists cut it for other cards because Mimic Pod has much better flexibility due to its lower cost.
Dog's list is the highest rated Cavern list right now and was one of the first. The standout additions over The Dig are Youthful Brewmaster for bounce consistency, Swashburglar for card generation and pulling Patches, and Violet Teacher and Moroes for 5/5 token generation. While I'm glad to see Moroes find a home in a top tier deck, I don't quite regret dusting him as I've heard many people say they are cutting him because he felt like a win more card. (I will not be dusting any non-duplicate legendary from here on out though). I don't have Edwin VanCleef, so I wasn't able to try out this exact list.
Mkrr3's Quest Rogue is the next highest rated Cavern list and the one I have played the most of. The Flame Elemental package of Fire Fly and Igneous Elemental adds some much appreciated consistency to achieving the quest and are good for generating more bodies to put on the board once the quest is complete.
Ryzen is another Legend player and he added Glacial Shard and Vanish to his list alongside the Flame Elemental package with the three core bounce cards of Shadowstep, Youthful Brewmaster, and Gadgetzan Ferryman.
BorkBot piloted this list to legend and it is interesting because it cuts the Pirate package and adds cards such as Betrayal and Vanish, along with Glacial Shard, Doppelgangster, and taunt sources such as Bilefin Tidehunter and Defender of Argus. I intend to transition to this list if I have problems with Quest Warrior.
Supporting Spells: Preparation for tempo, Mimic Pod for card advantage, and Backstab and Eviscerate for removal seem to be the most common choices. While Dog and Mkrr3 both run Fan of Knives, both Ryzen and BorkBot cut it for other cards such as Vanish and Betrayal. None of these lists run Thistle Tea, which is a shame, but it is too expensive for a deck archetype that wants to win quickly.
I think the version RDU played yesterday in high legend (100~50) is close to being optimized.
- double doomsayer, no swashburglar, elementals, double glacial shard. See if you can find the list,
I personnally play a more classical version, with one backstab, thalnos and double evis, double fan. At my rank every one seems to think that rogue removed fan, and a turn 3/4 with thalnos prep fan won me quite a lot of game.
RDU version is probably better but for the moment I stick to my list. I removed swash according to his list and he is right that it feels better without them. After finishing the quest I often have only one or two mana left to play a minion during the same turn. And pulling patches at this moment is much better than on turn 1
Woah, do you always out put this incredible effort into your comments Nemast? That was an awesome insight into the meta, thank you!
I've personally tried all 3 of the most popular versions you mentioned and Firebat's one too, with Ryzens having the most success with me. However, just like XIII's death rattle variant, Borbot's deck just looks absolutely amazing to play, I must check it out!

Never thought about double doomsayers because of no bouncing value, but the meta is so annoying for quest rogues that it might actually help a lot! Fan of knives has also saved me more times than I can count, don't own thalnos to make it better tho :(

I'll have to try this one at some point as I liked the focus on charge minions that the original The Dig list had. Also, interesting observation about Swashburglar pulling Patches too earlier, hadn't considered that.

Thanks, Kaireaver. I had fun writing that up because I feel that anything worth doing is worth doing well. I find the Cavern Rogue archetype to be interesting and exciting because many of the lists are light on legendary and epic cards. While I did craft Preparation, I got The Caverns Below and Patches the Pirate from packs, so this archetype feels really accessible to me.

Three use for the doomsayer : Either as a delay tactic turn 2/3 or just after a vanish to ensure a clean board to start your quest and a really good dirty rat pull. Even against quest warrior the card is useful because his taunt minions have really low attack value and he may not want to sacrifice a removal to kill him when he knows that he will have to deal with our 5/5.
If you often play rogue you may want to craft thalnos. really a good legendary which can fit in a lots of deck

Yes, It almost the same list, he started with bilefin hunter instead of bluegill then completely removed them in favor of one ooze and one spelleater to counter aggro and freeze mage. The list seems charge heavy with no removal so probably more focused on beating control deck, I don't have much time to play this month so I still did not reach rank five. Once I reach it I may do some tinkering with Rdu version to see how it feels.
But the swash is probably not coming back into my list

Those are interesting changes, Eater of Secrets in particular would have helped me win my last game. I don't play that much but I'm 8-2 with Mkrr3's list so far as I work my way up the ladder.
Deck is definitely not overpowered it just feels like it is because of the speed of the quest and the initial swarm. If you can manage to outpace them or withstand the initial onslaught, the deck falls flat on it's face. The deck is weaker than pirate warrior was at theat the end of gadgetzan, so the whining is really uncalled for.
I would have to agree. I've played both Pirate Warrior and Cavern Rogue and I'd have to say that Pirate Warrior feels like the faster deck. My fastest wins with Cavern Rogue are around turns 7 or 8, while with Pirate Warrior I've won even earlier around turns 4, 5, or 6 due to my opponents conceding to the board state. Pirate Warrior is much more oppressive since they are trying to kill you from the very start. You can actively pressure Cavern Rogue with early face damage while they race to complete the quest and that method is very effective if you know that is what you have to do.
For oppression pirate warrior cannot be beaten, the two decks re quite different. Pirate warrior almost cannot be outrun but have to be contained from turn 1 to 8. Quest rogue is the revers there is nothing to contain until turn 4/5 and the deck is really easily outpaced by any aggro deck.
quest rogue feels a lot like malygos rogue. Difficult start until you piece all the combo and then win from behind.
I'm running a list inspired by RDU's initial Doomsayer list, with Golakka replacing Doomsayer. I get the edge against PW but lose more against token druid. I imagine the list only works well for climbing to legend and dumpster legend. Here's the list:
I'm going to try out this variant that I put together. N'Zoth Garden Quest Rogue. Inspired by the Deathfire list. Sherazin is slow but it's very sticky and with it always coming back as a 5/5 I think it could be decent. N'Zoth is there for late game finishing. Not a real serious idea, just something to toy around with.

Depends on the matchups, really. The most consistent might be elementals + Vanish.
Vanish is definitely one of the better cards. If you prefer being a greedy fuck, then go with Boars and shit.
Make the Card: The biggest thread on the site!
My mandibles which are capable of pressing down and tearing, my talons which are known to intercept and hold.
I like more the version with Glacial Shard because you can delay the early agression from opponent, the deck weak spot.
