Rogue has become much stronger with WoG, and that means both Thalnos and Van Cleef are terrific & very useful minions to include, not to mention that they will stay in both Standard and Wild forever, so they are not legendaries that will sonner or later be phased out, like others that people are thinking of crafting right now.
FTPer here and I don't have EVC or BMT. If you only had dust for one, which would you choose? Thanks in advance.
Let the experts answer. But I was in your case, and no way I'm spending 1600 dust to replace a Kobold Geomancer by Bloodmage Thalnos. I perfectly understand that Thalnos is much better, but I'm poor on dust and I find that too much dust for the improvement. So I crafted VanCleef.
Thanks, sounds like others are in agreement with you as well.

Hmmm... they serve different purposes. I take it you are deeply interested in Rogue? They are great legendaries to consider. They are not 100% irreplaceable, but they fit in many different decks and will be played a lot, also due to their low mana cost.
Thalnos is a unique & very cheap (and thus combo friendly) combination of both spell damage and card draw. He is most valuable in Rogue where you need a bit of extra damage for your removals, and an extra card can literally win you a game, since you rely on an almost constant series of combos. He's also useful in other classes, like Mage (freeze or not) and Druid (to enhance your Swipes etc).
Van Cleef can be very flexible, according to your plans for each individual turn. You can make him as big as you want him to be, and there are some sweet tricks you can pull with him (Shadowstepping, cloning him with Shadowcaster etc). But he is easier to replace than Thalnos, in my opinion. He can be usually subbed with another card according to what you want to achieve in a Rogue deck, and severe penalties to the efficiency of the deck will be rare. But you might have more fun with him instead of using a very efficient, yet very simple - and boring - tool like Thalnos. Plus, like others have said, Thalnos can wait, with a Kobold Geomancer in his place instead.
I would probably choose Van Cleef, but only if you are covered regarding most of the other basic Classic cards.
Vancleef has ranged from a highly played card to a non existent one. When he is in the meta though, he is pretty good. With silence being nerfed id say craft it.
I don't think they will make new silences, at least not any as cheap as Owl ever again. Blizzard probably realized that they underrated silence in the beginning. But yeah, VanCleef's power level really shot up with all the nerfs.

Actually, Rogue has been my least played class. I've never gotten a Prep in a pack (and as an FTPer never crafted one) nor any other legendary. I only played the class when a quest depended on it. But I just got the new deathrattle legend in a pack (and a Shadowcaster), which looks pretty good, so now - for the first time - I am interested in the class.
Thanks for your reply - and thanks for having the new Wild tier list in your sig, I've been looking for that! Looks like from all reports I should craft the new C'Thun Double Emperor taunt dude :-)
You're welcome, I'm glad to help. If you are not deep into Rogue then Thalnos and Van Cleef are not great picks.
Yeah, Twin Emperor Vek'lor has insane value in a C'Thun deck. He keeps his insane value even if you don't include C'Thun himself! That's a fact that is relatively not very well known - the C'Thun buffs are applied in any case regardless of whether you have actually included C'Thun in your deck, so if the conditions of double Vek'lor are met, he will appear as a double. But since C'Thun is given for free, and since you would be buffing him anyway, it doesn't make a lot of sense not to include him. But it's just an example of great value in some C'Thun minions, for example Disciple of C'Thun - he can easily be run in almost any deck without a C'Thun it it.

Preparation is mandatory if you intend to play Malyrogue or Miracle.
Others than that, not that much. I think your average Rogue starter pack for any kind of deck is x2 : Backstab, Eviscerate, Shadow Strike, Si 7. With that you can start whatever (C'thun, N'zoth, ...), especially if you have Finley.
I found this list which doesn't run Prep or EVC. It's been a lot of fun so far (especially the Shadowcaster shenanigans) so I'm gonna save my dust for now. Thanks for the feedback!
