I've been working on this Velen Big Priest and its been performing pretty well ranks 5-3. The Velen package only takes up 3 cards at the moment (Velen, Emp Thaur, and Mind Blast) and its a nice backup plan to have against the already strong shell that is Big Priest. The deck performs adequately against aggro if it can draw its early clears (SWH and Spirit Lash) but does a great job against most control decks assuming it can draw its summoning cards.
The deck can be overwhelmed by aggro if it doesn't draw any early clears or the lucky Obsidian statue summon, but the deck struggles tremendously against Kingsbane Rogue.
Any advice, insights or card swaps are welcome. I love the idea of this deck having the already strong presence of Big Priest, with the added benefit of having a hidden burst plan as a back up through Velen (atleast until summoned) but I would love to hear anyone's ideas to refine it more.
EDIT: I recently made these updates to the deck
-1 Holy Smite -1 Malygos
+1 Emperor Thaurissan +1 Shadow Word Horror
+2 Excavated Evils
While i loved getting the Maly Velen combo going, pulling a maly early with no spell damage in hand really hurt the deck against the aggro/tempo match ups. The extra SWH and the 2 Excavated Evils definitely helps with that, and the added benefit of Emperor gives the deck some nice discounts all around.
The burst combo still exists in the deck, but it just comes in the form of Velen/Mindblast + any extra damage generated by Lich King or Ysera (taking into consideration the discounts from Emp T there is some real potential for surprise burst damage from the deck, alongside the already strong shell that is Big Priest)
I'm not Big Priest main or anything but it feels really klunky to have so many minions in the deck. All the Big Priests that I have met went only 1 direction: Either it is usual Big Priest, or Big Priest with Kel'Thuzad,Blood of the Ancient ones or Soggoth, or OTK Maly/Velen Big Priests. Also your boardclears are coming online way too late. In this meta the biggest Priest offender is Odd Rogue and you have only 1 Spirit Lash. I know that another copies can be discovered trough shadow visions but that is too unreliable if we take intoi consideration how many spells are in the deck.
Thanks a ton for the reply. I agree the deck does feel alittle top heavy. And i 2nd the notion that most of my board clears (save for the spirit lash and the SWH) are all late game. Ive put thought into cutting Malygos and something else for maybe 2 Excavated Evils, though i wonder if maybe just a 2nd spirit lash would be more beneficial since it can be played much earlier
