Hey guys I made a mistake and decide to play combo razakus priest with velen and stuff and I figure it out that this version of highlander priest is horrible. first there is not enough board pressure on the board so you need to draw Raza on curve all the time and if you don't draw Raza Anduin even Lyria until your last 10 or 8 card it definetely cost you game.
it is weak against many archetypes. Which N'zoth was strong against such as Jade Druid etc.
So if you want to craft Velen for this priest think it twice because it doesn't worth to craft.
If your short on dust crafting niche class legendary feels pretty bad, you might find use for it in one deck and that deck could fall out of favour in the meta making your craft useless. That being said Velen is stronger now than I remember him ever being in the past, and being in the classic set at least he'll have a chance of relevancy for a long long time.
Velen is the strongest version of Razakus Priest. I suspect you just aren't playing it optimally. Let's be clear here - this is not a deck you can just pick up and start winning with right away. It's difficult to play well most of the time, because you won't usually draw Kazakus on 4, Raza on 5, and Anduin on 8.
In addition to the wombo combo burst from hand, sometimes Velen must be played on 7 just to contest the board; other times you need to drop it in 9 with Spirit Lash to heal back to full.
Not a waste. Velen is classic and has been good in many meta's.
In combo 24+ damage in one turn is huge.
If you play a maricle combo in standard you can actually turn out 32 damage in one turn pending your overall spell choices. It's effectively the only OTK deck in standard right now (unless you count Exodus, which I don't) and it's only possible by Velen.
Velen is classic so at least it is a safe craft in that way. It might become good later or might give you 1600 dust if they decide to move him to hall of fame
The main problem is to draw the right cards early. For this reason I made a deck which is more consistent and I'm having a 67% WR with it atm (about 100 games). I added more card draw and Hemet, Jungle Hunter to draw the key cards of this deck at the right time. Archbishop Benedictus to counter fatigue.
When I started playing the deck at around rank 7 I could barely reach a 50% winrate .
I have now climbed up to rank 2 . At first the deck felt weird and I didn't see the proper plays . It's starting to feel easier to read my hand and see what the plays are .
I never used priest before now and I think it's simply a matter of putting in the number of games .
Velen is incredibly strong to end games out of nowhere or also games that you had no business winning .

The problem is not the Velen is being useless it is the arhetype that Velen only fits. The archetype doesn't have back up plan if you don't draw Raza you cannot win and that happens all the time to me.

And like SchruteBucks already said you need some practise to play this deck.
I have tried versions of the Hemet/AB approach and the main I problem I have with it generally are:
The chances you'll draw Hemet on turn 6 are only slightly better than drawing Raza on 5 or Kazakus on 4.
Many low cost spells have synergy with Velen; deleting them goes contrary to your win condition.
It's really difficult to parse your deck of 4+ cost cards such that you drastically increase the chances of drawing your key cards after playing Hemet.
In this specific list, your deck after dropping Hemet is 14 cards, assuming you haven't drawn any 4+ cards yet (so let's say 10 to 14). Is that worth Hemet? Again, I doubt it.
In said mini-deck, you run cards that don't contribute to your win condition (Lich King, Statue, Eater of Secrets). IMO you need to pick one main win condition - if it's Velen, run cards that support the wombo combo....if it's a board centered win condition, cut Velen and run the N'Zoth deathrattle version. A deck that tries to do too many things isn't going to be as good as a deck doing one or two things.
Eater of Secrets is not a good card right now because Quest Mage isn't that popular and you're going to lose to that deck no matter what, and Secret Mage is beatable without it.
Golakka Crawler is awesome on the other hand because at least two tier 1 decks run pirates (Elemental/Tempo Rogue and Evolve Shaman).

You are right with most of your points but consider: This deck has multiple win conditions! You can lead the early game with low cost minions/ spells or if you draw bad you control the board with your heavy spells. For late game there are big minions or archbishop. Or you just go classic highlander priest. Or you mix it up. That's what I love about this deck - it never bores me to death! And most aggro decks are manageable atm. If you have the dust I would give it a try.
Last week I encountered tons of diffrent mages. With Eater of Secrets I was able to win a lot of them.
(Edit: I rarly finish games with the velen combo - it's just one more win condition)
If you play the N'zoth variant and feel like you need Raza to win, which means you rely on Anduin as your win condition then maybe this list isn't working out for you .
If you play the deathrattle package you run it as an alternate win condition .
Have you tried to run the cycle package instead ? This might allow you to draw Raza and Anduin more often .
Oh no doubt, Hemet + AB gives you many win conditions. My point was that a deck centered around a main win condition will always be stronger than a deck trying to do many things, simply because you have too many cards going in different directions. It's fun, for sure though.

He is good but far from be "much stronger than Lyra", Lyra never is useless, Lyra + 1 cheap spell can turn a lost game into a win with luck, Velen is a finisher but have the risk become a dead card if opponent is able to push much pressure early.
Lyra is for priest the same Fandral is for druid, a powerful legendary you can get some value in turn you play and win the game if opponent cannot kill imediately.
Just pushed legend yesterday with velen with a 67% win rate, actually he is a key part and much stronger than lyra
What do you mean much stronger than Lyra? Why would you compare the two?
Lyra requires cheap spells to cycle.
Velen requires cheap cards for burst.
Running both means you're taking away fuel from the other. Additionally, running Lyra means you're playing a poorly statted 5-drop in order to draw out removal, getting very little value from a cheap spell or the coin and no Radiant, waiting until turn 8 at a minimum to play Radiant and Lyra + cheap spell on the same turn in order to eek out some value, or you're waiting until you've drawn and played both Raza and DK so you can Lyra + Radiant + cycle for burst damage, and in that case Lyra is a dead card in your hand.
If your plan is to cycle + burst, you should probably choose one: Lyra + Radiant, or Velen + Radiant + Mind Blast.

You are looking at Velen too narrowly if your opponent gets the board early and you think he's a dead card on turn 7.

The fallacy is that you have to build around him, many do that, and I believe it to be a mistake. He's actually better in a more tuned deck without mindblast or the 1 cost 2 damage card. He's great after raza for on curve healing, he presents a must remove target, and he's obviously great after the anduin turn.

Velen is just one card and in Razakus deck he is awesome and sure deserve a slot.
