I've been playing HS since a bit before TGT and have been enjoying the content a lot until recently. I've gravitated toward Rogue as my favourite class, but I had began to warm up to Priest when Trump did his GvG F2P run with the class. I started to understand the strengths and weakness in the world with sticky minions and Dr. 7 every which way we turn. Now, we're in a different environment. Lots of fast decks, and combo-y, mid-rangy style decks born from a limited card pool. Unfortunately, the priest decks haven't changed much before standard and after. People just slapped Excavated Evil in place of Lightbomb and that was that. Unfortunately, we still see this deck really hit or really miss, depending on the reactive draws.
The point of this post: I've been exploring a more proactive priest, despite the feeble and janky tools give to the class. I'm interested in some thoughts. The hardest matchup right now is zoolock (turns 1-3 is basically 15 damage to the face every game), but I've been able to outplay Token Druid and various warrior decks (except Worgen Combo Warrior). Thoughts?
I am happy to see this and encourage you to continue. Most priest players are stuck in the past and if you show them a deck with some different cards they will laugh at you haha.
Anyway, in my decks I don't have problem with zoo, I run doomsayer, shadowform and excavated evil which is also a great card vs shamans and dragon warriors.
Holy Nova is not good in this meta, what I would suggest is to remove shadow word pain, 2 novas and the ooze and replace them with 2 doomsayers and 2 excavated evil.
Thanks for the positive words. I'm thinking hard about it, and I might just give that variation a whirl. It's not too big of a change, and might make a difference in the long haul. I'll come back with my findings. The only thing I don't like is the EE, which doesn't really jive with the Violet Teachers. It would literally be a dead draw if I'm ahead on board, but want to maintain it.
I see you point, I was like teacher has 5 health, that should be OK with excavated evil but all the 1/1s will die.
I didn't try the deck yet, so when teacher is on board and you are in control, how good was holy Nova? Did you feel like you needed it or you were doing OK in that position?
If you can create a consistent teacher board in most games, then in that case I think something like power word tentacles (1 of that card, two is a dead draw) would work will, no?
I think you should take out silence since i dont see any synergy for it in the deck and i think its a pretty bad card overall, i would rather run a second entomb due to the fact that you rarely want silence a low value minion (like fiery bat) and it doesnt work with fjola.
Otherwise i think divine spirit is a little bit out of place, there are no real cards which have high enough HP to run it (why even Inner fire with those minions) I think to improve this deck get rid of silence, divine spirit and inner fire to get Auchenai and Circle of healing in your deck they would help a shit ton against Hunters (with Call of the wild who all have only 4HP) and zoolocks which primarily run 3-4hp minions like imp gang boss, also circle of healing allows for better trades and synergizes with Nordshire cleric

Thats is what he is trying to change in priest, adding a second entomb and the COH combo will make it another control priest deck with violet teacher as a replacement for late game cards like sylvanas and ragnaros.

Thank you for your reply. Believe it or not, Silence hasn't been a dead card for me. It's a free token when Violet Teacher is out, plus it throws a wrench in the works of sticky minions. Vs Hunter, I wouldn't keep it in my opener, so using it on a Fiery Bat is out of the question. More like Savanah Highmane backed with Shadow Word: Death to clear it out. Other instances are denying the coin from Tomb Pillager (I literally lost a game once because the Rogue took tempo back from having that 1 extra mana. Another game where I silenced it, she got shut down on top-decks. Couldn't combo). I honestly tried Circle of Healing, but it was a dead card 90% of the time.
I think we're looking at Divine Spirit in different ways. My gameplan with it is to be a proactive card. Sticking it on one of the 4-drops allows it to trade up immensely. Put it on the Violet Teacher, and suddenly she becomes a lot harder to remove (think about how successful Klaxxi Amber-Weaver has been with C'Thun druid)!
Also, I'd to mention that I tend to use inner fire offensively a lot; you can stick it on a pesky 4-attack minion to make it removable by SW: Pain or Death (think of it like a slam-execute combo), or stick it on a low-hp enemy to save your own minion from dying in a trade.

Certainly. I'm trying to make a mid-range style deck. One Entomb is there to kick out Sylvanas Windrunner to stay ahead on board. If you're smart with your Northshire Clerics, you can possibly draw her up again, plus the burst you need to finish the job before the deep late game.

I see that you are running 2 inner fire. What is the purpose of that in this build? There's not too much in the deck to hit with it to get value, so is it there to use on opposing minions?

Yeah, as I explained in a post above, I find it really useful for preserving my own minions on board. Turning a 7/2 into a 2/2 means the Violet Teacher or Azure Drake remains on board. It's definitely not used as an OTK mechanic, but can turn up the heat or put the fire out on your terms. :)

You can try Grim Patron in this. Buff it, slam it into something, heal it... tokens everywhere. Yes, it's slow, but it could work with PW: S and Divine Spirit.
I decided to take out the clerics for Sunfury Protector. I'm still trying to find that unicorn 2-drop that is viable for priest. Also, the Squirming Tentacle is faring well so far. It's no Death Lord, but It can stand a couple of hits in the meantime and sometimes lasts more than one turn. That seems to be the game turning point: having one thing stick means you can be more proactive instead of purely reactive. That's more of what I'm trying to get at. Tokens still do amazingly well. Unfortunately, you could never run any Resurrect-style cards because of Violet Teacher. Pity.
So, I decided to take out the Azure Drakes and Sunfury Protectors for Priest of the Feast and Arcane Anomaly. Both of these cards are like the Violet Teacher: they interact heavily with spells. Both from your deck and what you thoughtsteal. It seems to be doing really well so far. That 3hp sets the finish line way ahead for face-race decks like tempo mage and zoolock and anything that's not control Shaman.

Finally, someone starts realizing the real amount of decks Priest can have! Back before Ben Brode was trying to encourage players to branch out with Priest, I had ideas for Yogg and Token Priest even before those were things. Priest has just as much potential as any other class for greatness right now, Savjz reached Top 10 legend with it and there was even a guy who got Top 5 with an AGGRO PRIEST. Keep up the good work!

The tools for a lot of aggro styles are there, but for priest its harder to get the ball rolling because of inconsistent card draw, or getting a bad mulligan with no early drops. I do think that Inner Fire and Divine Spirit. A lot of people think its just for janky OKT decks, but I've found it to have lots of value to make a beater that can heal, now that BGH is out of standard.

I'm using reno n'zoth buff priest with Fjola and Eydis and I'm pretty happy with it.
