Played 30 games unranked/ranked ( 70% winrate, atm rank 7 ) and faced all different kind of current meta decks.
Edit: reached Rank5 today, winrate went down to solid 60% because of the coin flips vs all the aggro decks More detailed explanation of the first turns @ deck overview
best matchups are dragon priest, midrange shaman, jade druid even matchups are all kind of reno decks and aggro warrior ( pirate / dragon ) unfavored vs aggro decks with mass small minions ( paladins, druids )
It is not easy to play and you have to think twice when to use your buffcards / debuffs ( aldor , uldaman ). I hardly use Smugglers Run on Turn1 because of the small amount of handcards ( exception vs aggro decks )
Sir Finley Mrrgglton solid card vs aggro ( firebolt, healing ), vs controle ( warlock, shaman, firebolt ) Dirty Rat good against aggro decks and winning wombocombo mind-control-tech+brann against controle decks Big Game Hunter won many games for me because people don't play around it.
I am playing only control paladin decks since the card release and I can say that grim enforcer/doppelgangster is too slow. Once in a time you will win with your 9/9+ Doppelgangster or 2-3 buffing turns via grim enforcer but against Aggro both cards are dead cards and against control decks you lose to much tempo in the mid game, where you have to put pressure against renodecks.
There is no good timing to play Doppelgangster in the current meta. They don't have taunt / charge vs aggro decks and no debuffing battlecries aggainst Jade/Renodecks. Turn 6,7,8+ are needed for Ivory knights / tirion or other card combos to survive bursts.
Atm the deck has no space for those slow cards and replacing 4 cards seems impossible for me without losing winrate.
Is Tirion even good anymore? every game it screws me. I took it out.
Tirion does his job, he work against some aggro decks and most of the time against control decks. My experience is that if you play correct you will have board control and they have to use big AoEs or single removals. Know your enemie decks and try to force them to use hard removals.
Almost everyone plays 1 Ooze to counter pirate warriors. Goon Paladins harldy use truesilver to maximize the buff value and get srewed after tirion is dead because they ooze the weapon. In this deck they will use their Ooze much earlier to destroy the truesilver and you can finish with Ashebringer.
Reno steals it with sylvanas or makes a copy of it with faceless then I'm stuck dealing with giving them an ashbringer. Or it gets entombed or deathed then harissoned.
Against all fast decks the game is over well before turn 8.
Against Reno: Play him on curve or wait until shadowflame is gone. Sylvanas + Shadowflame is a turn10 combo. Avoid playing him on an empty board. If they use their faceless vs tirion you almost won, No Leeroy + Faceless combo left. Agianst ashebringer we have buffed taunts/ ivory knight. Renodecks use Doomsayer, play (Brann +) Dirty Rat to destroy their combos - Dirty Rat acts like a "2mana, destroy one opponent minion" card if the opponent plays a doomsayer.
Try to play Don Hancho befor Tirion. Tirion acts more like a deathwing vs controle decks. You only play him if you are sure they can't deal with it because it is very late in the game but than he is a matchwinner. They have to deal vs Ragnaros, buffed minions, they will run out of hard removals very quickly.
Vs Aggro it depends on your draws. 50-50 chance to survive till round6+ and than he wins you the game because aggro decks harldy use removals.
Im gonna give this version a spin.. looks interesting..
This deck looks smart. MCT and bruiser is what these crap paladin decks need to gain back tempo. He's right about dopple and enforcer. They sit in my hand usually with no time to play them. Even priest can way out tempo paladin regularly now.
I'm not sure on dirty rat. keeps screwing me over by pulling ysera vs dragon priests. It feels like the deck needs enter the coliseum or something to rest otherwise you're toast. Even if it pulls a blackwing corrupter you are still pretty much fucked.
Cant beat dragon priests at all actually. They are bringing the value and tempo every damn game.
Dirty Rat is very "difficult" to play, and needs card knowledge of your enemy deck. Don't play him on curve! I hardly play him on an empty board if i dont have enough minions to kill the "worst case". Try to set up Dirty Rat with MC-Tech or wait until it got buffed few times, 4 attack is a sweetspot.
Buffed Acolyte + Truesilver or Uldaman is also a good moment to use Dirty Rat if your opponent doesn't want to "waste" minions to give you card draw.
Doomsayer is always a situation where I play Dirty Rat. "2 mana instant removal", sometimes even with Brann against renodecks.
Enter the Coliseum is not bad, had some success with it but it was too situanional and I prefer 2 ivory knights over it and you dont want too many 6 drops / spells
PS: played dirty rat vs warrior on turn2, empty board... turns out it was control warrior and I had to face gromash on turn2 ^^ still won with uldaman topdeck but ye.. dirt rat sometimes kills you but more often wins you games vs controldecks in ocmbination with MC-T or vs aggro decks on turn 5,6 when the opponent only holds spells / weapons
( in adavance sry for the formating / bad english )
I would say it is a midrange deck with some combo mechanics.
The matchplan is to take back the board on turn 3,4,5. They will start flooding the board or use hard removals to answer our buffed 3,4,5 mana minions. Flooding the board will get anwsered with value trades or MC-Tech combination. Hard removals are limited in numbers and our ragnaros or tirion will feel safer if they use them on 5/6 taunts.
Brann + Ivory Knights, Brann + Dirty Rat + MC-Tech are winning combinations
Mulligan for any 3 Drops
Average turn 1-2-3-4: Pass/ Smuggler's Run or Grimestreet Outfitter / Acolyte / Aldor or Truesilver
Pass: We don't have many 1 mana cards and we hardly will use our coin to play Grimestreet Outfitter because the lack of hand cards and his weak body. Sir Finley Mrrgglton: Great body vs pirates. Firebolt/Warlock are the best ones. Firebolt helps vs Aggro and activating our Acolyte to increase card draw, warlock card draw helps vs controldecks getting key cards earlier + increasing hand card buffing value. Shaman is decent because of the taunt totem. Healing/Armor good vs facedecks. Druid/Rogue underwhelming because our lack of healing. Smuggler's Run: is only a Turn1 play if we have coin + 3 drop ( argent horserider , adlor peacekeeper ) and we face aggro decks ( pirate warrior) or we also have Grimestreet Outfitter for turn2 and we are facing aggro decks.
Heropower: If we play vs aggro it is sometimes our only play, don't use heropower vs priest if they played their cleric Grimestreet Outfitter: played vs aggro to plan ahead for strong turn3/4 turns, sometimes it is better to play him on turn3 + Smuggler's run if you don't have Acolyte in your hand and you are facing a very slow deck. Coin + 3 Drop: Our winrate is higher with coin, coined out 2/4 Acolyte, 3/2 Argent Horserider or 4/4 Aldor are good against any aggrodecks Know your opponent decks and think about their 3 / 4 mana turn. If we are holding Truesilver Champion we might want to save our coin for turn3. Smuggler's Run : Sometimes it is better than heropowering, we haven't played it on turn1 because we want more cards for buffing and we win because our buffed 3+ mana drops and not because a turn2 1/1 dude who might give the opponent some advantage ( frothing berserker, backstab combo, wrath card draw, coil card draw ) Dirty Rat: 99% of the time I don't play him on curve. slow decks are no threat on turn2 and we need Dirty Rat to activate our Mind Control Tech or taunt up in the late turns vs high dmg minions. even against aggro decks it is a bad idea - warriors often have 2-3 pirates on the board after turn1, if we play dirty rat and they get frothing berserker or any other +4 health minion we are screwed. buff him in your hand and wait. turn5 is the first time we can combo him with MC-Tech and most of the time he will be a 3/7+
Aldor Peacekeeper: We only play him to answer dangerous threats ( mountian giant, jade golems etc...) or to help trading / buying time for later MC-Tech plays. Argent Horserider: Our Turn3 weapon/hard removal vs aggro. Think ahead if you need him for later turns in combination with Truesilver Champion or Uldaman. Acolyte of Pain: Sometimes too slow against aggro warrior but most of the time the best 3 drop for us. opponents will waste removal spells to minimize our card draw. in comibnation with turn 4 Aldor / Keeper of Uldaman / Dirty Rat , 2 card draw are almost guaranteed. Second-Rate Bruiser: MVP in the current meta, very good drop to slow aggro decks down, against control he will cost most of the time 5 mana and helps us to put on some pressure with a big minion ( 5/6+ most of the time ) Mind Control Tech: MVP² , he will bring us back in the game, someitmes it is possible to play him on turn3 as a buffed 4/4 and you get controle of one of the pirates or shaman minions. most of the time we will wait for more value in the late turns. Brann Bronzebeard: Only play him vs aggro warrior if you don't have any other 3 drops. Wickerflame Burnbristle: Best card vs Aggro and solid vs control because of the divine shields. I wait for 3/3 4/4+ stats to use him on the later turns
Truesilver Champion: Best card to answer Berserkers, Brann, Emperor, Azur Drakes and some other threats. People think paladin plays no spells/ weapons nowadays and don't play around it. Keeper of Uldaman: Best hard removal in combinaiton with Truesilver/ Argent Horserider and should be used wisely vs controle. agaisnt aggro it sometimes is our only card to take back control if they don't kill our board minions. most of the time 4/5+
Don Han'Cho is a great 7 mana drop without any interaction with the opponent minions/handcards. Most of our cards are very situational and need a good target or combination with other battlecries. We need cards who can be played on an empty board + increase our value for the next turns after big AOE / hard removals. Those cards are Don, Acolyte, Finley, Grimestreet Outfitter, Second-Rate Bruiser, Wickerflame, Ragnaros and Tirion.
Don Hancho is big enough to be a threat and helps reducing opponents hard removals. The minion he buffs is also a hard removal target and playing a buffed Argent Horserider or Dirty Rat is sometimes the winning move. Most of our cards are 3 mana minions who will become a very cheap threat which can be played in combination with other cards.
Grimestreet Protector could fit for the same spot but has huge downsides on an empty board, same goes for Eadric.
tl:dr: he helps reducing opponents hard removals -> Tirion/Ragnaros/buffed minions are happy
I just wanted to chime in and say that I really enjoyed reading this thread. I've been working on a more conventional Grimestreet deck myself, and had come to some of the similar conclusions you had. The two that really stood out to me that people don't talk about are:
a) Second-Rate Bruiser is godly in any sort of buffing Paladin deck. It is so powerful for anti-aggro while also being a reasonable threat to control. Never a useless card in any matchup.
b) Truesilver Champion is far too good to give up. All the decks that drop it for slightly more Grimestreet synergy are hurting themselves a lot. There's a reason it was included in basically every Paladin deck in Hearthstone's history.
Sadly, I'm in the same place as ArgentumEmperio: I don't have Don Han'Cho and am reluctant to craft him. I fully hear your argument about having some empty board plays; yet another issue I've run into when trying to refine my own deck.
Edit: small question though. Why BGH? Just one more answer to Rag/Mountain Giant/Golems?
Edit: small question though. Why BGH? Just one more answer to Rag/Mountain Giant/Golems?
Excactly! In the old pala control decks we had Aldor + Uldaman + Truesilver + Equality to kill big minions. BGH got nerfed but we never had better targets after Dr.7 got removed. Maybe BGH ist not a must have but there is hardly a matchup where there is no good target.
Renolock: Mountaingiant, Ragnaros, 6/6 + Argus buff Renomage / Freezemage: Alexstraza / Ragnaros Shamans: Aggro Shaman: Flamewreathed Faceless Midrange: Jade Golems, any high dmg minion + flametongue totem buff, Ragnaros Warrior: Piratewarrior sometimes gets 7+dmg Berserker or bloodsail raider + arcanite weapon buff Dragonwarriors play Ragnaros / Drakonid Crusher Druid: Jade golems Rogues: Edwin VanCleef, most minions with cold blood buff Priest: sadly no good targets Paladins: nobody plays paladin! Hunter: nobody plays hunter!
+ Ivory Knight sometimes only gives bad cards via discover... taking Blessing of Might or some other attack-buff-spell can help to find new BGH targets
PS: if I had to change some cards, BGH might be my first card to drop. but atm I have no reason to do it.
I have been playing a version using none other than Mayor Noggenfogger, its really fun. Im also using Sergeant Sally and she can be pretty good.
My problem with Sergeant Sally is the lack of tempo. Sadly we can't trigger her like warlock but maybe she can replace BGH if we need more AOE. Played her in my old decks with Grim Enforcer/ Doppelgaengster, I will test her. ;)

Yeah so far she has not done very well...it is pretty difficult to get her statline up high enough to have a decent AOE since she starts at baseline 1/1, I see that as the bigger problem. And she doesnt seem to fit into the "flow" of the deck in general which as we know is already finicky and awkward. It sucks because she looks like she could be a good solution to one of the main problems, dealing with swarms of minions.
I am playing 1x BGH and I wouldnt remove it, I've found it to be useful almost every time I have him in my hand.

Renolock: Mountaingiant, Ragnaros, 6/6 + Argus buff
Renomage / Freezemage: Alexstraza / Ragnaros
Shamans: Aggro Shaman: Flamewreathed Faceless
Midrange: Jade Golems, any high dmg minion + flametongue totem buff, Ragnaros
Warrior: Piratewarrior sometimes gets 7+dmg Berserker or bloodsail raider + arcanite weapon buff
Dragonwarriors play Ragnaros / Drakonid Crusher

Good to see someone making Paladin work, I still have 0 interest for the class.
Maybe replace Don with Argent Commander or Grimestreet Protector ( he will underperform on an empty board but will be usefull because of his taunt )
