I guess it comes down to preference but I do not agree with this . I do not like elekk as they do not guarantee something,Creepers and spinner do .
Also, I have played around with bear trap and I absolutely hate it and to me it was never good . I know a lot of people say it is good but to me it will just not cut it .
I played different versions up to rank 5 using 1 bear at a point, from rank 5, I replaced bear with explosive , explosive was the mvp at that point . Before that, I used to run 1 freezing double snake and it was winning me game left and right up to about rank 6-7, then it started to get harder to get good value out of it, that is where I went with 3 different traps to keep people guessing .
The link is the deck I used to rank 5 to Legend without any change to it during all those games
I won't argue the differences between webspinner/haunted creeper and kings elekk. It's all opinion and how each player plays. But I feel kings elekk and bear trap require less thought to play with more immediate board impact. You just put it down and its there, no thought, just play. And it feels like this is what OP might be tussling with a bit in his head, is that thought, "should I play this now? or throw it down for a nice little combo next turn?" you know?
True, it comes down to preferences, of course a elekk that wins is VERY strong but , after testing it , I hated how Elekk can get one shotted by weapon and you get nothing in return .
It is also very easy for a warrior to turn 2 war axe it and take 3 and thats it , its gone, but it is much more awkward for him to trade with his axe and the creeper and its tokens . Of course the same can be said when you have tokens facing his acolyte of pain , but you see my point .
I definitely do man, I run a Harrison Jones and cycle 1 Acidic Swamp Ooze through the deck here and there but at the moment warrior hasn't been giving me too much grief, so I may be lucky in that respect.
I run into a lot of Druids is 2x Hunters Mark is a big help for me.
lol, feel your pain with the Highmanes, most of my get silenced when I play them :(
Limiting myself to beasts probably hurts a little but I like the theme.
Stranglethorn Tiger is a big help to me. Stealth prevents it being taken out before it can attack. Had a good win this morning where I hit the opponent with Tiger, Highmane, Eaglehorn, Hero Power and Kill Command. His board with full with Boom + bots, and Silverhand Recruits
Hitting a Snake Trap, then my turn Leokk, so good. Tempted to try a Timber Wolf aswell for power from UtH
Seems like there are quite a few options with this deck. I have felt at times that there are cards I wish I'd kept after removing them. Others, I wish I could just ditch them. Still coming up short quite a lot. Lost to an aggro Shaman, Another Paladin(this class should be in MY favor? wow, lol) a Warrior with nothing special, a Mech Mage, whatever. Cant. Get. The. Board. Ever. Always at a minion disadvantage, it seems. Too many cards that just sit in my hand with no use. Its like my opponents are spewing minions like a factory and Im "patiently" waiting till turn 3 to play Animal Companion which spawns a Leeok(not everytime but Huffer only lasts one turn and Misha always dies quick to). Even if Webspinner was played turn 1 they are long gone by now and its 50/50 on what Beast I got. I always need one more mana... just one more.
I always try to get logical cards on the mulligan. Even if I do - Haunted Creeper is slow. So is Webspiner. Scientist is good value but it doesnt always work out, trust me. I added Ellek back... tired of being out-minioned by a 3 to 1 ratio. Its sooooo downhill from there, LOL. Lose the board, lose the game from what I can tell. The aggro Ive been facing makes me want to load up on 1-2 mana cards and have at it. :D
Oh well - everyone has posted some good things here. Thats cool.
Starting to get pretty irritated now. People keep praising these mid-range Hunter Decks and they are NOT cutting it. Whats the trick? Whats the deal? What matchups are simply bad?
Need some details here - if people are truly raking up with these decks, can we get some proof? I find it hard to believe since Im playing the same decks and they keep falling short in various areas.
Great, thanks.
My buddy who's been playing the game for 3 months (if that) just hit legendary last week playing midrange. He hit level 4 with it the first month he started playing.
I don't play hunter often but I can assure you it's one of the most consistent decks in the game.

Exactly, consistency is what it is ! I had never hit Legend before, though I often got to around rank 2 and just could not make it further . I started to play again 2 month ago after a 5 month break, and I hit Legend with midrange hunter really really easily .
It has to come down with decision made in games if people seem to never be able to get board control . It is NOT a face deck , efficient trades have to be made early and knowing when to face instead of trading knowing that your opponent HAS to trade anyway will get those extra 1-2 points of dmg you need between a lose and a win .

Playing for three months and getting legendary. That's cool. Seems too easy. Why are there so many of us stuck at worse ranks then? Something isn't adding up here. I mean, there are only so many plays you can make and so many actual decisions. If you have no card to play or have a suboptimal card....wtf then? I dunno. That's why there are so many theories about this game being mostly luck of the draw or matchup dependent. I've had a string of games where I'm sorry but no one on this planet could have played around any of it. When Paladins are flooding the board with mini bots, buffed recruits, and whatever else and you are sitting there with NO traps, a hound master, and a highmane...where the hell you going? You're losing, that's where you're going! :).

There's that "really, really, easily" thing again. Geesh. Against what decks? What were your staring cards? What were the first three drAws? Maybe the problem with this game is that there is NO real way to determine what went wrong or what went right since the variables are unlimited. I don't know how any of your guys games went. That data isn't available. I don't know what classes you faced, what cards they played, what happened on certain turns, etc, etc. you can watch YouTube videos all day but until you get to watch several games in a row of people getting to legend it's all, just anecdotal evidence or whatever. I believe everyone, not saying I don't. I just can't learn from any of it because the information isn't there.
I watched some of trumps midrange Hunter videos last night. Two of the games he won and one of the games he lost. Interestingly, from what I could tell he only made ONE play that I probably wouldn't have thought of. He silenced his own highmane that a paladin changed its attack from 6 to 1 using aldor peacekeeper. So the highmane went back to 6 attack. Great move. That helped him get fatal. Honestly though, every other play and turn went exactly how I would have envisioned it going. Webspinner turn 1, creeper turn 2, eagle horn turn 3, so on so forth. Nothing stood out like "oh wow....he just got out of that jam with an incredibly brilliant play". No miracle moves. Dare I say the cards played themselves?
And the game he lost? Shaky starting cards and his opponent had the board plastered by turn 4. Exactly what I'm running into. Not a d.amned thing he could do. No explosive trap. Owls when they weren't needed. You get the idea. That's cool though. It is what it is. What I'm learning is that this game is NOT setup for comebacks and the RNG frustration level out there is there for a reason. Must. Get. Good. Starting. Cards. If you don't..... Adios.
Might as well have fun now... Time to see if I can fall all the way back to rank 20! Might even try some gimmick decks just for the hell of it. That's more entertaining than this ridiculous ladder grind. I know....it's EASY though. You just show up and hit legend. Guess I didn't get the memo, LOL. Thanks for the replies, gents.
I can only laugh now. This game is a fucking joke. Just played two mech mages and they had me down to 9 health by turn fucking 4. Turn 4. Maybe they have extra mana that I don't know about? How the hell? What the.....? Seriously? And, as it always seems, my starting cards were useless. An owl, a highmane, and boom. Great. I'll just wait until turn 6 and drop that "very powerful highmane" and that'll turn the tide. Yeah right. Highmane is a garbage card unless you're ahead and the board is empty. Sorry but that's how it is. Your opponents don't care one bit about that card when they have 4-5 minions on the board and plenty of removal spells to get rid of your stupid highmane. The problem with highmane is that it does NOT effect the board right away and in this super fast meta, cards that sit there "asleep" get removed instantly and have zero impact. And no, the hyenas don't last either. Worthless.
You all must be playing against the slowest decks EVER or something. No effing way you're beating these turbo charged mages and Paladins that FLOOD the board within 3-4 turns. The ONLY way out of it is to draw perfectly which of course I never seem to. I always draw and mulligan shredder, boom, highmanes, hound master, whatever. Would it kill Blizzard to let us choose a few starting cards? Geezus Crust, gimme a break.
Whatever. I need to find a card game more like chess, I guess. This starting card and draw BS is so infuriating and stupid. It's like a casino. Place your bets and hope you roll a 7 or an 11. Utterly hilarious.

First , you need to relax a bit, you know playing tilted is horrible ? Also, no Highmane is never garbage, no need for an empty board, you know what happens when a mage fireball it or a hunter kill command it ? thats 5-6 dmg not going to your face and he STILL has too deal with 2 2/2 .
You need some confidence also when playing a deck, which you clearly don't have in this one . I suggest you do as you said and play around with other deck, try successful deck, it helps with being confident in your deck .
Everything you said in your last post is plainful wrong , highmane has an immediate impact because he NEEDS to be dealth with . I mean, the way you speak , every minions is worthless , highmane is one of the more valuable minions there is, dropping 2 bodies when he dies ! How can this be called worthless ?
At some point, you have to sit down, focus, realize the mistakes you make, both in mulliganing and in game , because my friend , this is the single and only reason why you are ranked where you are at , and this is not an insult, far from it, knowing what needs fixed is half the battle
I play a midrange hunter deck that has quite a few difference's from the netdeck builds that you usually see. For one, I only run one Highmane, because like you said it is dead weight in the early game. My build plays for board control over aggro face. I recommend making deck changes that will help you fight the decks that you are having problems with. Also, I would playtest in casual with the deck and the changes you make before trying to ladder with it. Get very proficient with the deck and your matchup's before playing ranked. Good luck.

Well it was easy for him, he's excellent video game player. Why are so many people stuck at worse ranks then? Well because we (that includes myself) are not as good at video games. The game is not as easy as just as picking a tier 1 deck or just hoping for great RNG - there IS actually a skill to the game. That's why someone like my buddy, who dominates at pretty much every game he plays can pick up this game, spend a minimal amount on cards and hit legendary within 3 months of playing.
I can assure you when I watch him play - he'll every now and then do something different than what I would do. It probably explains why he's legendary and I'm currently sitting at rank 5 =p

You are right - probably tilting at this point. See my second reply below. I have found that a few minor deck tweaks that are NOT neecessarily popular have helped me a lot. So has thinking through what to do on certain turns. Many times you realy do only have one play but if you have more than one its worthwhile to plan it out for your next turn.
Highmane isnt worthless - it just seemed like too many games I had to drop him against a full board and in that case he isnt so great because he gets ignored or dealt with fairly easily. OTOH, with an equal board or when you have board control he is a monster. Maybe I ran into a terrible string of matchups along with some bad decisions? I dunno, I just felt like I sat there waiting 3-4 turns before really being able to "get going" and by then it was often too late. Now, after adding Sludge.... I *seem* to get bettre starting cards and have a better curve to play. That makes no sense but thats whats happening.

Yes - I have made some changes to the "base" midrange Hunter deck and something interesting happened: I started winning games like crazy. The only changes I made were to ADD two sludge Belchers, get rid of explosive trap, and added back a second Houndmaster. Doesnt seem like much and many would argue that Sludge has NO business being in a midrange Hunter deck. But, hey, it working for me thus far against the meta Im facing. Sludge is PERFECT alternative to Loatheb if you are behind on the board which sometimes I am. He clams things down so your Highmane or next turn has a better effect.
I have not missed explosive trap either. UtH, Juggler, and freezing traps seem to get the job done. Although one of my fw recent losses was to a facehunter but he had a great opening hand.
Either way... Love this deck a LOT more now with the mid-game stability and alming effect Sludge has provided me.
I too have been having alot of problems with midrange hunter. I made it to rank 10 easily, then started a massive losing streak. Nothing was working. I was losing to every type of deck. I haven't been able to get above rank 16 since. WTF am I doing wrong?
One big problem is that I can't get any big minions (highmane, Boom, etc.) to stick. They always get immediately destroyed.
I guess it comes down to preference but I do not agree with this . I do not like elekk as they do not guarantee something,Creepers and spinner do .

I went up 6 ranks using Hybrid. Midrange kindda sucks against faster decks/face decks.
Thanks for the info, as always.
I win due to skill and lose due to bad RNG. :D
Cool deal. Glad to hear it.
I've been using Sparkaz's deck with Acidic Swamp Ooze subbed for Kezan Mystic:
