Hunter was extremely weak in K & K and unfortunately is even weaker now as we had very good cards rotated out, cards like Cloaked Huntress and Cat Trick.
While Warlocks get OP cards like Spellstone, Lackey, Voidlord, Dark Pact and other Hunter gets Dragons and fun but generally useless for climbing ladder cards like Duskhaven Hunter, Vilebrood or Toxmonger. Hunting Mastiff and Dire Frenzy are not used often as well.
I don't think Spell Hunter is Tier 2 deck with average win-rate of 48%.
Spell Hunter is very slow deck - you start building board only after turn 2-3 (on turn one you can only play candle shot, then traps and turn 3 is animal companion which is very slow) and you do not have silence so it is nearly impossible to fight Warlocks for example. Fighting aggro with Spell Hunter is a problem as well because Hunter doesn't have any AOE removal tools, best removal spell to fight early aggro is Explosive trap.
Hunter lacks healing/armor, AOE, card draw mechanisms and class is becoming more and more unplayable with every fucking expansion. We still rely on mostly classic set cards.
Warlock matches are definitely though, but somehow I have managed to go 6-4 against them so far. Druid has been the real kryptonite with 2-8 against them, but at least on 2 occasions I had the most ridiculous draw ever, so i might as well could have autoconceded those.
On the other hand this deck eats mages and rouges for breakfast, 11-2 against mage and 9-0 for rouge, so 2 games out of 20 lost to these two classes combined. Pala is more difficult, but i'm still 7-5 ahead so far.
Btw I'm not packing Rexxar and To My Side!s (which would help with control decks). I understand that the case is different in rank 5 to 1 tier games. But if piloted well, this seems viable for at least climbing the ranks if you are low on dust and cards.
It is slow for the first few turns, but it really picks up steam with spellstone and flaking strike is great tempo. Hunter's mark has won half of my control wins. Also you shouldn't mulligan for candleshot when going against control decks, instead look for tracking, or anything else but candleshot..
Don't get me wrong, I definitely agree that hunter has been left out of the spotlight compared to the darlings of hearthstone and would love to see more powerful cards released, since this is my favorite class.
Just climbed from 11k legend to 2900 legend with spell hunter in a couple of hours. Honestly didn't feel like any match was unfavourable and was a blast to play.
Hunter sucks because there are no incredible strong archetypes for it. You have face hunter which loses to any control deck or anything with sustain and then you have spell hunter which either loses to aggro or falls off late game.
Actually if you play spell hunter correctly it can work very well especially late game with Rexar I have beaten many late game based decks. What kind of spell hunter do you play?
Baku hunter can punish hard greedy decks and with luck can race vs other aggro decks, it is a Tier 3 in minimum.
The sad part is DK hunter become much more powerful now with so many lifesteal/rush beasts at your disposal, if the class have 10% of the love warlock received you can play control hunter, unfortunately hunter and rogue only get crap, all insanely good cards are for paladins and warlocks.
I don't know what rank you are, but for me, the meta has changed a lot. I faced a lot of token and quest druids, even warlocks, quest priests, control mages, and even/shudderwock shamans from rank 5-2. Odd rogue is the only old deck that stayed and got stronger. Yes, cubelock and spitefuls are still around, but they're weaker. Are you really gonna complain about that?
FWIW - the HSReplays homepage lists class win-rates over the past 48 hours. Hunter is currently at the top of Standard, along with Druid and Paladin. The meta-game will continue to shake out over the coming weeks, but it's possible that the nerfs to combo-control Warlock decks, and slowing Spitefuls down by a full turn have opened up enough mid-game room for decks like Spell Hunter and MR Hunter to compete. I guess we'll have to wait to see how things continue to develop . . .
Spell hunter is very good right now. I hit legend with it. Climbed to rank3 with my Kathrena Hunter easily. So it's not about class, it's about you
I have to agree with this comment. Spell Hunter has been the bane of my gaming life this afternoon. If you give them a chance to flourish you'll eventually lose the value game.
After nerfs hunters are on the rise, and a few varieties too. There are decent even and odd hunters, spell hunter, Hell I climbed 10 to 5 with quest hunter yesterday before the new season.
Just because a deck doesn’t have a tier 0 deck doesn’t mean it can’t do really good on the ladder.
Have you actually tried to grind with one or researched successful decks?

Spell Hunter has been the nuts to play against for me. Can you use that as a template?

Spell hunter is really fun. HS Replay shows it as having a very high winrate, too, so I think it's reasonably solid post-nerf.

Just happened to watch the DreamHack final and was pleased to see midrange hunter taking the victory !!
Midrange Hunter is tier 1 in my book, DK Rexxar OP vs aggro and control now due to abundance of LifeSteal + Poisonous/Rush combinations.
It does have a really bad matchup vs Quest Warrior
Another Hunter player.
Greetings traveler.
Greetings, traveler.
Let's make Hunter great.
I'm not convinced you have enough hunter decks in your list.
My list is very similar to his, except almost every deck on it is a rogue one, instead of a hunter one. :P

i don't think hunter is actually that bad right now, there are some nice hunter decks with good winrates which are not even that expensive. for example: https://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/1122825-hybrid-hunter

Nerfs and Rexxar brought the class out from oblivion.
Woah, necrothread.
