Always wanted to try it out, and now with Flobbidinous Floop I'm even more intrigued.
Thing is, I never learned to play it properly, as I always feel forced to use spells as removal to not get overwhelmed. How do you survive until you can pull off the combo, without using swipe to board clear? I was thinking about using https://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/1169939-caravaggios-rank-1-malygos-druid that's found on the front page.
It depends on the matchup. Against Aggro/tempo use everything u have to survive. The wonderfull thing about maly druid is that it has a lot of diversity. I think i won more games outlasting or outempoing my oppenent than comboing them down. Against Control or other Combo decks u usually dont need to use ur burstspells. just ramp draw and play asap ui its usually enough to deal with non tempodecks
It really depends on the match-up, against fast and minion based decks (stuff like aggro or tempo decks, odd pally, zoo, odd rogue i.e.) you should clear the board when you have a good chance, against those classes you very rarely need the full combo, on that case you're playing more of an attrition game, just run them out of resources and then win, against slow decks and and armor classes you need the full combo, you also need alex and stuff like that.
One problem I've seen with new maly druid players is that they think this deck only wins with the full maly break twig play floop and burn face combo but that is only true against slow decks, vs. fast decks you win by runnin them out of stuff while developing the few minions this deck has and maybe at the end you can burn the opponent with maly and some moonfires but that should never be the main plan. Another problem I see a lot is new players being scared to just drop malygos or floop for tempo, if you drop a huge 4/12 dragon there are many decks that just can't deal with it or sometimes the opponent misses a lot of face damage cause if you swipe them with maly on board their whole board goes to shit, same with floop, getting a 4 mana 3/4 giggling inventor against aggro is insane for example, I can't tell you how many games I won just by tempoing malygos out.
Against fast decks the combo is almost irrelevant and against slow decks you really shouldn't be pressured enough to have to use a swipe but even if you do, remember you have a bunch of powerful cards to deal heavy amounts of damage, Alex, Lich King, Plague into Branching so there's no a "guide" to playing maly druid, is usually a deck that reacts to the opponent and has the ability to otk the opponent if played correctly but it definitely is not the only way to win with it.
Against agressive decks you don't need the combo, you just remove everything, try to setup for a good spreading plague and don't be afraid of pinging their minions with your hero power, you usually have to do it a lot. After you stabilize you just win with Malfurion/Lich King/Allexstrasza/Malygos.
Against control and combo decks it's a race to cycle through your deck and reach your win conditions before they do, in which druid is great. Against control warlocks try to keep as much minions as possible in your hand to play around the demon project card.
As people mention above with agro decks you can sacrafice a swipe as they have no healing. My general plan with agro is to alexrasia their face to 15 health and kill them from there whether it be 2x moonfire or minions. On the other hand, with control decks I usually keep everything and destroy them late game. IF you are placing warlock I would keep one or two minions in my hand if I have magylos so there demonic project fails. Mind Control Tech is also a great card against any deck that plays big minions Ex: Even Warlock with the Giant
Currently rank 3 with a standard Maly list (the Disguised Toast one) and still climbing. Just faceroll ramp/armor cards until you get your combo, that's really all there is to it. Aggro decks will concede before you even need your combo. Control decks will die to your combo. The only time I have any difficulties at all is with Even/Control warlocks.
Now that I am part of the cancer, I'm really hoping for a few free Legend finishes before the nerf.

I'm playing the same list at rank 3 right now with a great WR, you can add me if you play in NA and you want to watch a few matches, it's Dahrug#1946.
