What's the deal with the lich King hype? As far as I understand ysera is just better. The cards generated are generally stronger and cost less mana, while the higher health means he isn't just killed by and big minion or burn spell. Thoughts or explanations?

The big advantage to the Lich King is that he costs 1 mana less, allowing you to get him out earlier or play another card alongside him. On top of that, Taunt means he has immediate board presence. His cards tend to cost more than Ysera's but have a bigger effect than hers, and given you'd typically play him in a control-style deck, that's something you'd probably want. Ysera is much better in decks like Dragon Priest and possibly ramp druid, but she doesn't quite have as much power to immediately impact the board for most decks, even if she can survive for longer.
I feel like the taunt is useless, as leaving ysera or lich king alive for a few turns basically means insane value and insta win. More attack is compensated by less hp, and with the insane effect surviving is probably more important. And the quality of cards from ysera and lich king are comparable, if not in ysera's favor.
How can you say Ysera cards are better? Anyone that says this hasn't played enough LK. That or they just aren't playing the cards right. If LK was 4/12 he would be severely overpowered.
On the other hand, having taunt is actually a downside. The fact you can throw Ysera behind a taunt minion for protection gives her more survivability. LK will always be exposed.

The taunt is useless? Are you saying that immediate effect on the board for a card that costs 8 mana is useless?
Only two cards at nine mana have ever seen regular play on ladder - Ysera isn't one of them. The difference between 8-mana and 9-mana might not look like a lot, but consider CotW. Prior to the nerf, Midrange Hunter was a Tier 1 deck, and two copies of CotW were in every deck. At 9-mana, the card is unplayable. Ysera has never seen regular play because the opportunity cost of playing a 9-mana card which doesn't do anything until the turn after it's played is too high. If Ironbark had the Mana Tide Totem text: "Draw a card at the end of your turn," it would be played in every Druid deck that wasn't aggro. LK is an Ironbark that draws a broken card at the end of each turn - the cards are generally redundant, so the LK provides removal quite consistently. Ysera produces four very different cards - two of them are good, but usually not great on 10-mana.
Making direct comparisons, most of the cards are pretty similar. Both have a boardclear, except ysera's does more damage. The damage to your own board is usually overlooked, as dropping a 8-9 drop usually means you're boardclearing next turn anyways.
Dream seems pretty comparable to the burn spell and removal of LK, just less permanent and less repercussions as well. Emerald drake is just good. Laughing sister is the only one I can't defend, cuz it's just ass.

Taunt means they have to remove him, with Ysera if they have big minions they can just chose to attack your hero, and Ysera's lower attack means she'll be less able to remove them. Not only forcing their trades, but providing you with extra survivability for one less mana is much more useful. As for the quality of cards being more favourable, they absolutely depend on what kind of deck you're running them in, a deck that runs the lich king is not the same as one that runs ysera.
The Lich King has way more tokens that can help in more situations, making it more versatile. For example, Ysera Awakens is way worse than Death and Decay. Frostmourne is another example, nothing given by Ysera even compares to it for value.
Another reason The Lich King is better is it's stats. It's effectively an 8/8 8 mana taunt + at least one card, Ysera is 4/12 9 mana without taunt. You can even use LK to soak in some damage in case you are low. It is just a much more versatile card than Ysera, you can't even her AOE if you are low.
How is 5 damage for 2 mana *way* worse that 3 damage for 3 mana? Also the self milling cards can detrimental for control v. control games going to fatigue.
He's pretty much Dr. 8 just by virtue of having an 8/8 for 8 along with taunt are pretty good stats.
Then tack on having a better and more versatile card pool, needs to be answered by trading into and losing board or using valuable removal, and he paves the way for your other finishers depending on the deck. He himself can also most definitely be considered a win-condition if he can't be answered for more than a turn, generating insane value.
His card pool that he draws from is versatile enough that he fits well in most any deck that isn't SMOrc all day such as pirate warrior.
Honestly if ysera would have taunt she would be in every deck period. Taunt on LK is actually huge while i agree that yseras cards are better on average
I would run Ysera [/card] in a good Control deck because there, she is truly the wincondition.[card] Lich King is however aRagnaros or Dr. 7 of this expansion so he fits in almost everything due to his body and taunt. Effects are not so good. Guys lets face it: Even Yseras cards do not have such a huge drawbacks as a Lich Kings cards. And also it is waaay more random based what you will get because off the bigger amount of the DK class compared to Emerald cards.
Ysera has much better generated cards and is "invincible" for priests :), Lich King has better body and mana cost. Still, i think Lich King is by far most overrated card of the expansion. People are putting him to every deck, even to those where it has absolutely no meaning whatsoever. Something like Elise from Un'goro.

taunt, more attack, better cards i thing its enough. Ysera sees play only in control but Arthas can be played also in midrange
People ignore Ysera and go face , they can't ignore LK , if he does stick a turn or two the opponent is screwed.
The mana cost is also a big deal. 9 mana is the worst mana slot. 8 Mana allows Hero Power to still be used. The taunt factor is major as well.

I prefer Lich King, but he is also easier to remove than Ysera.
1. Black Knight can kill him
2. PW: Death can remove him
3. Ysera can be discovered by Netherspite historian, Bone Dragon can get him.
You spelled better wrong.

Some of the Lich King cards have such bad synergy with control decks..
