Hey, this is my first time posting so be nice :)
Posted this since have not seen any other detailed guide on this kind of deck.
Update:
12.12. Removed 1x Ultimate Infestation added 1x Innervate, added some info to Mulligan guide.
11.12. Added in a special usage note for some cards. If you are unsure of some other cards please post a comment and i will try to clarify.
9.12. Removed 1x Greedy Sprite added 1x Faceless Manipulator Added in Faceless Manipulator combo.
General idea of the deck:
You are supposed to use different combinations of Malygos, Ixlid, Fungal Lord and Evolved Kobold combined with your Twig of the World Tree to kill your opponent in 1 turn.
For example for complete 30 damage OTK you can:
Play Malygos (+5 Spell Damage) -> Break Twig of the World Tree (Refresh Mana) -> Swipe (9 Damage) -> Swipe (9 Damage) -> Moonfire (6 Damage) -> Moonfire (6 Damage)
Play Ixlid, Fungal Lord -> Play Evolved Kobold (+2 Spell Damage) -> Gets copied for another +2 Spell Damage -> Break Twig of the World Tree (Refresh Mana) -> Play Malygos (+5 Spell Damage) -> Gets copied for another + 5 Spell Damage -> Moonfire (15 Damage) -> Moonfire (15 Damage)
Play Ixlid, Fungal Lord -> Play Faceless Manipulator on Ixlid, Fungal Lord -> Summons total of 3x Ixlid, Fungal Lord -> Break Twig of the World Tree -> Play Malygos (+5 Spell Damage) -> Summon 3 more Malygos (+15 Spell Damage) -> Moonfire (21 Damage) -> Moonfire (21 Damage)
These combos of course require you to get all of the cards mentioned, but very rarely does your opponent have 30 HP when its time to OTK, there will always be occasional smorcing to the face, so you could have an OTK with sub optimal setup too, always count how much damage you could do right now.
For example i have won a game by playing:
Malygos (+5 Spell Damage) -> Breaking Twig of the World Tree -> playing Evolved Kobold (+2 Spell Damage) -> Swipe (11 Damage) -> Moonfire (8 Damage) -> Moonfire (8 Damage) for a total of only 27 Damage.
Usage of some cards:
Swipe might seem like its a really important part of the combos, but usually i find a OTK setup using only 1 or sometimes 0 Swipe. It is a bit hard to describe when it is okay to use it, but as you can see from the combos listed above Swipe is only part of one of the total 30 damage OTKs. So sometimes when the situation could require a swipe for easy clean, it might be very good to use it.
For example:
If i have Ixlid, Fungal Lord, 2x Moonfire, Swipe and 2x Evolved Kobold in hand, i am much closer to a moonfire otk than i am to a swipe one, and as a Evolved Kobold requires you to only have 1 of the 2 cards, you might even use a Swipe+Evolved Kobold to clean the board and buy you extra time to find an OTK.
This card can only be okay to play from hand if that prevents opponent from killing you, As this card is required for all of the complete OTK setups and will always be usefull in killing your opponent.
You guys are probably familiar with a priest spell known as Greater Healing Potion, Branching Paths can be exactly the same thing when you pick the armor option 2 times. But Branching Paths has the extra utility of drawing 2 cards if armor is not needed, with a Gadgetzan Auctioneer you can draw 3 cards.
Note: There is a pause between card draws of Branching Paths so you can first see what you draw and then decide whether to heal for 6 or draw another card. Does not trigger Gadgetzan Auctioneer twice.
Faceless Manipulator + Ixlid, Fungal Lord:
If you play Ixlid, Fungal Lord -> Then Faceless Manipulator you summon in total 3x Ixlid, Fungal Lord
-> Then play Malygos for a total of 4 (+20 Spell Damage)
Thoughts:
At the moment i have very mixed feelings about running UI (Ultimate Infestation) in the deck, since I have maybe had 2 or 3 times ever when i have been able to use it due to the very heavy draw in this deck, in the other hand on paper it seems VERY strong.
Card replacements:
Don't have Twig of the World Tree? Well you are in the wrong deck mate.
Don't have Malygos? I'm sorry but Malygos is sadly not replaceable.
Don't have Malfurion the Pestilent? No worries, Add in another Naturalize, Spreading Plague or UI, for example or anything you feel like you need. Maybe even 1x Jade Idol.
Don't have Ixlid, Fungal Lord? Well then you should probably take off 2x Evolved Kobold too since you cannot copy those for the 30 Damage OTK. You should add more armor generation or Jades.
Can i run Jades? Yes, yes you can. You should replace 2x Greedy Sprite with 2x Jade Blossom. Then you can either swap Ixlid, Fungal Lord and 2x Evolved Kobold or Spreading Plague or UI if you are not finding them usefull, for 2x Jade Idol and maybe Aya Blackpaw if you want.
You could also run Oaken Summons, but then you take out the 2x Mire Keeper and the Evolved Kobold probably, can swap for Jades or Recruitable cards.
Mulligan Guide:
First of all Twig of the World Tree is the most important keep, but do not specifically look for it, usually you want to keep all other combo pieces you draw too but do not specifically look for them either.
Also keep any ramp like Wild Growth etc.
If you think you are against Aggro:
Keep all of the cheap removal like Wrath and Jasper Spellstone.
Matchups:
This deck has a really hard time against against decks like Control Warrior that generate more HP than 30.
Lastly, if you have any ideas, question or suggestions, feel free to post them in the comments :) Thank you for reading!
Hey, sorry to hear that. Could you maybe try describing more of why you have problems after turn 7-8. Have you read the section on when you can use Swipe for extra removal?
About the early game, its usually very chill and easy, getting some ramp and trying to use Twig of the World Tree + hero power and cards like Wrath for removal.
For the Branching Paths its not a game changer but just like Greater Healing Potion can save you from a though spot.
I came across similar deck to this while playing today - but he ran 2 faceless manipulators.
His combo was Malygos - break his weapon, then faceless - faceless - moonfire - moonfire for 32 damage.
Hey, thanks for the comment.
I too have thought of adding a second Faceless Manipulator but think it is a bit too much and not necessary.
I've been playing this a bit lately and I don't think UI is a very good fit for the deck. Often I can't use it because I would risk overdrawing combo pieces. Other times I am to close to fatigue to use it. I want to take it out but I don't know what to include instead. Obviously I can't run Medivh to pop the Weapon early. So I thought I'd either run a 2nd plague or put in an innervate to draw with auctioneer.
What do you think? What would you put in instead?
Hey, thanks for the question.
I too have experienced same problems with UI. But then again it has saved me a couple of times from a bad spot, but i do too think it has been a dead card in hand more often than it has ever helped me.
I personally don't think running 2nd Spreading Plague is good as i don't often get to use it, but if you feel like you need it against the decks you are facing please go ahead and include one.
Innervate is a good idea in my opinion but i do believe running 1x Jade Idol would be better. But if you don't use Jades out of personal preference or some other reason i think running Innervate is good.
Can you post a general guide. I mean what do you go for? try to control or try to find the pieces? Also what should we mulligan for? Do we use branching paths for draw? Hou should we use auctioneer? We cant waste most of our cards i mean neither moonfire or swipe. Do we use the eartherns scales or the spellstone?
Hey thanks for the comment, sure i will post one as soon as i have time to sit down and type a proper one as that does take some time. Mulligan is hard to figure out but i am testing it all the time to learn more, as you can see from the guide its being worked on. Ill add a section on branching paths and swipe tonight. Do you mean do we use the earthen scales for the spellstone?
I mean on auctioneer. If we play auctioneer. we have little to no cards to play with him..
Hey,
With auctioneer this decks uses most likely Earthen Scales, Jasper Spellstone, Wild Growth (provides 3 card draw if not able to use for ramp), Wrath and Branching Paths.
Edit: So 10 of the 30 cards of this deck are easily usable with auctioneer for draw, in my opinion that is enough, feel free to add more cards like Innervate if you feel like you do not draw enough.
Thanks. I havent been seeing the same sucess as you unfortnately. You should record your games it would be very helpful..
Hey, would love to record, but as I am in a process of upgrading to a new PC I am currently lacking a GPU so that is not an option right now.
I like your deck and I definately tried it. But I just thought that it'd be better to replace Ultimate Infestation with Greedy Sprite. I think UI is pretty bad here because of the draw, rarely finding good use for it unless I manage to draw it really early at the cost of good ramp cards. Greedy Sprite on the other tho is really good for ramp and a board threat benefiting me whether it stays alive or not. Other than that I run the exact same build and it feels really good OTK'ing your opponents so often and (surprisingly) so consistently with all these spell damage and minion summoning cards. Besides my opponents have no idea what the hell I'm playing surprising them with Malygos and a rain of spells :D
Hey, thanks for the comment.
I do agree on UI being kinda bad in this deck if drawn at wrong time, but then again so is a Greedy Sprite too. But i guess Greedy Sprite can always be played unlike UI. But then Greedy Sprite can't save you from a though spot unlike UI can. Very hard decision in my opinion.
How is your winrate with the deck?
So yesterday I was pretty much playing (with my version) all day and had a 56% winrate in 34 games but I'm still trying to get the hang of it.
Today I'm trying your version and so far it has a 60%-ish winrate. Maybe it's better, maybe I had better matchups (less spell hunters and secret mages and more priests and big decks) so it might be affecting it. I see the uses of Ultimate Infestation but sometimes it's absolute garbage. I'm gonna have to play some more to figure out what's best. I'll let you know, I really enjoy this deck.
Hey,
By your version do you mean only the UI change or also something else?
Love to hear you are enjoying :) Maybe we can make this a more popular archetype.
Yeah I meant the one where I replaced the Ultimate InfestationUltimate Infestation with another Greedy Sprite. But now seeing that you removed it for an Innervate I think it's better and makes me wonder why I didn't think of it sooner. Maybe one Gadgetzan Auctioneer is enough and better swap the second one for another Innvervate? Dunno Imma try it out and let you know as the second Gadgetzan Auctioneer feels pretty much useless since I make all the draws (or most of them) with the first one.
By the way, I think you already know that Thijs made his own version of the deck and plays Prince Taldaram. Maybe we try this out instead of Faceless Manipulator as a most Mana-Efficient card? Lemme know what you think. This deck has become one of my favorites to play especially since Druid is my favorite class (So tired of climbing with Jade and Aggro all the time xD).
Yeah if you happen to draw the first auctioneer second is pretty bad, but still you know, you never draw anything you would like :D Also i guess it can always get potion of polymorphed or something, so i think ill still prefer 2.
Only caught a slight glimpse of this version, but i don't really agree with some of his choices. If you have the extra dust i think Prince Taldaram is interesting choice, but then you loose your 3 mana cards, well i mean your one Greedy Sprite, so i guess you just replace that with Prince Taldaram and you will have a second cheaper Faceless Manipulator, so then you can use 2 extra mana before breaking Twig of the World Tree.
So I decided to make a Taldaram version to see how it goes replacing the Greedy Sprite for another Innervate and put back in the second Gadgetzan Auctioneer. I still have some doubts about the usage of the second one, maybe I'll replace it with a second Ultimate Infestation. Still tho I think we are getting close to finding the perfect build for this deck xD. Yours is the only one I know that has Evolved Kobold in it and I think it should be a core. Allows you to OTK so much easier with it. And Prince Taldaram gives me a couple extra Mana to play with [I can use for example Lesser Jasper Spellstone to either clear my board for the combo or burst some armor (on Warriors mostly)] before I get to the combo.
But yeah I do agree that Thijs's deck is not as good, perhaps because we are putting much more work to it rather than play for the memes, though I think Prince Taldaram Is really good. I lose my Greedy Sprite and with it some ramp but I think the second Innervate makes up for it plus it helps me draw more with the Gadgetzan Auctioneer. Faceless Manipulator is of course just as good and will most of the time make no difference but for those of us who have the dust or (in my case) the card I think it's better.
I'll try in the next days to play with Ultimate Infestation. It's one of Druid's best cards and I think we could possibly try to fit 2 of them but don't know what to replace :/ Perhaps the deck is fine as it is and I'm overthinking it.
Hey,
I did originally (before posting) run with 2x Ultimate Infestation but they usually end up dead, atleast the second one.
I think you should maybe try running actually both Prince Taldaram and Faceless Manipulator so you could for example use one of them to copy an enemy's taunt minion or something similar for extra defense, then just replace Greedy Sprite with Innervate.
I can also understand why you feel doubtful about the second Gadgetzan Auctioneer, just remove it if you feel like it, i kind of like mine.
Very cool deck, I'll definitely be trying it out
