Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Gunnolf, and I am originally from the Land Down Under a.k.a. Australia. I am an avid gamer that has acquired a real passion for card games, which originated from my humble beginnings as a Yu-Gi-Oh collector and eventually grew from my dabbling in Cardfight Vanguard and Buddyfight, until we reached the game we know as Hearthstone.

I've played Hearthstone since the days of classic, with multiple accounts on both EU and NA servers. Despite having reached the Rank of Legend and my own personal mentality of equating 'having fun' with 'winning', I am not really a fan of meta power-grinding & net-decking, not that there is anything wrong with that. Therefore, I enjoy thinking about new, cool and fun deck ideas that push boundaries while also allowing you to win and those are what I want to share with you guys every-time I post a decklist.

I have presently become a contributing writer to WILDHS and will be posting articles there on a semi-regular basis, regarding deck-archetypes the status of the meta as well as how to get the most fun out of this game even if you aren't a big spender. If any of this sounds interesting, then I highly recommend that you check out of the website, as the writers and the owner himself are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet with great in-game knowledge (link to be website can be found HERE). You can also follow me on Twitter for latest updates.

If you genuinely like my content and would like to see me produce more of it, then please consider supporting me on Patreon. This is by no means necessary but it will definitely help me out in the long run. Thanks for Reading ^^

Deck Introduction

Knowledge is Power and you will know a Lot after indulging in this very exciting deck-reveal. Considering that K&C just launched, I thought I would go the extra mile and release three decks simultaneously, each one of a different archetype and for a separate class. If you would like to view the other decks, simply scroll to the bottom of this guide and click the link provided. However, before you go running off allow me to present you with an extremely fun list that has shown great competitive promise during playtesting. The archetype is none other than that of Burn Mage that soared to popularity during the Journey to Un’goro expansion. However, unlike most traditional burn mages we won’t be relying solely on spells to kill our opponent. The deck seamlessly combines the removal and board control of a Control deck alongside the Combo Burst Finisher of more combo-oriented style decks. So without anymore ado, let us proceed to the details.

What is the Win-Condition?

After an initial glance, it might seem that the deck has no clear win condition. Well there is always Alexstrasza + burn, but if you want to go that way, isn’t it just better to play Freeze Mage then? Technically you would be correct, but even though this deck looks a bit like Freeze Mage, the actual overall play style differs greatly. Now what do I mean by that? At some point in the mid game, Freeze Mage decks want to surrender board control completely. It just constantly Freezes the minions contained therein and then survives thanks to cards like Ice Blocks. This deck differs in so far as at no point in the game do you want to abandon board control, unless you’re already burning your opponent down and you have Ice Block up. Essentially of running Freezes and ways to stall the game, you run board clears and ways to swing the tempo in your favour at crucial times in the lategame.

This deck runs pretty much every kind of removal i.e. small single target, big single target, polymorph effect, general aoe which means that you should have the necessary removal when you need it. You control the board to the best of your ability and at some point you begin to execute your win conditions which are: Medivh, the Guardian + Value Spells, Alexstrasza + burn and Arcane Giants.

Card Choices Explained

Below you'll find reasoning as to why certain cards were included in the present list.

1) Arcane Artificer: Is a great new card that combos perfectly with spells as an anti-aggro tool. It has replaced Ice Barrier in the present list in an effort to cut down on low costing spells. However, the validity of this card should not be underestimated as it has proven its usefulness repeatedly.

2) Medivh, the Guardian: This legendary has essentially replaced Dragoncaller Alanna. Although, I did favor the Dragoncaller at first, I decided against her due to consistency issues as we are not running that many extremely large spells. In addition, weapon tech is not that prevalent so you almost always get value off of Atiesh.

3) Frost Nova: Is a great cheap card that will allow you to combo with your Doomsayer early in the game. Furthermore, it can be cast in order to protect your Arcane Giants from your opponent's board thus forcing them to have to dedicate spells in order to deal with them.

Can you adapt this List for the Standard Format?

Yes you can and  I fully intend to play this in Standard given how well the deck performs. However, there won’t be any major changes. Specifically, the only real substitution I would make would be that of:

-2x Forgotten Torch / +2x Frostbolt

Here you might question, ‘well it is the wild format so why do you still run Arcanologist over Mad Scientist? That is a very valid question to which I have a valid answer. If we have one ice block in play then Mad Scientist does nothing. Therefore in this particular deck Arcanologist is superior. Additionally, you want to reduce the cost of your Arcane Giants so playing spells is key.

Alternate Deckbuilding Strategy

In the eventuality that you don’t like the Arcane Giant Variant of the deck and prefer to go a little bit more in on Dragoncaller Alanna and the Burn Combo then you can make the following substitutions:

-2x Doomsayer & -x2 Arcane Giant / +2x Kabal Courier, +1x Gluttonous Ooze & +x1 Bloodmage Thalnos

These card substituions add a little bit more Bite to your deck in terms of value while also allowing you to deal with any potential legendary weapons run by your opponents as well as cycling that little bit closer to your win condition.

Author's Notes

I enjoy deck-building a multitude of interesting decks that are both entertaining and Legend viable (with some odd Free-to-Play lists mixed in). So if you like this deck (or anyone of my other ones) consider leaving a thumbs up, as it really helps in the long run! :)

Thank you guys for all your support and if you have any suggestions, let me know.
