Today, I am profoundly sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Indeed, the evil tyrant Ben 'Sauron' Brode has announced that Fiery War Axe will be nerfed to 3 mana.
It tuned from being one of the best weapons in the game to being a a powercreeped Magma Rager Tier card.
Ever since I started laddering in very early beta, Fiery War Axe has been a very polarizing card. Some hated it but all Warriors loved it. It was one free card, us Wallet Warriors, fancied in spite of not showing our wealth. When I grew exasperated of facing a 2/3 Undertaker during the Huntertaker meta, I would topdeck my good old Axe and end the suffering. When Tunnel Trogg was a 7/3 and bashing by lifepoints during Shamanstone; he was there for me. When that Northshire Cleric was drawing like a Nat Pagle from your opponent's Piloted Shredder, Fiery War Axe mysteriously appeared in my hand like a knight in shining armor. When double Mana Wyrms overdosed on meth mana, Dr. War Axe was the therapist that was needed. Huffer and Vicious Fledgling trembled in fear. On those days I felt like a Mulligan Wizard. It was glorious.
'Why is this crazy dude talking about a weapon using the 'he' pronoun like it was a living thing?' you may be asking yourselves. Well, Fiery War Axe, more than a weapon, was a friend; a companion to all Warrior players. Control, Molten Giants Warrior, Tempo Warrior, Dragon Warrior, Fatigue Warrior, Patron Warrior, Combo Warrior, C'Thun Warrior, RenoWarrior, N'Zoth Warrior and even the bastard rookier Pirate Warrior: all of us were united by out love for our dependable cutting tool. Why would Blizzard kill our friend during Druidstone? Warriors, excuding maybe Pirate Warrior, were already in a bad spot. And let's not talk about Warrior in Arena... Why beat a dead horse? This, we will never comprehend. Today is the end of an era. Our sorrow is ineffable. As we mourn our loss, we must not forget to one of the core tentants of warriorship: gratitude.
So for all those years we've spent alongside each other: THANK YOU. Long live the Axe. Today #JeSuisFieryWarAxe!
Swing twice to pay respects!
Great deck, but i'm having some trouble with the mulligan. Could you add a mulligan guide anytime soon?
Mulligan: Always keep Fiery War Axe. :)
Thing I find most amusing about the decision to nerf the Axe is that as a 3/2 weapon for 2 it was so much better than all the 3/2 weapons that cost 3. Well obviously, if that's all we're going to look at on the cards. All the other weapons with those stats have some kind of ability. Are we now to believe that the ability costs nothing on a card?
Win Axe was very strong. Its 3 damage made it relevant against every single 1 drop in the game. But hang on, we're spending 2 mana to clear a 1 drop and something else (plus taking face damage just because we can). Making it a 2/2 weapon for 2 would be just as useless because it could not kill the most relevant 1-drops. Arathi Weaponsmith essentially makes a 2/2 weapon for an extra 1 (a 3/3 with an upside always costs 3), for instance, and both minion and weapon on that card are unplayable.
Is it the fault of the War Axe that warrior has no class card 2 drops that are worth playing other than Armorsmith? Quite possibly! The class was designed around having a weapon in the 2 slot to clear up those pesky 1-drops and to promote tempo, so there *are* no tempo 2 drops in Warrior (neutral cards like pirates are different). Now that the weapon is gone from the 2 slot, the class as a whole collapses under the weight of having no efficient turn 2 minions outside Armorsmith.
In every other class other than Warlock, using the hero power on turn 2 usually meant you had a bad hand. Warrior will Armour Up all the time on turn 2 now, which means not only that you essentially had a bad hand most games, but it is also counter-synergystic with cards like Battle Rage. As I've argued before about these nerfs - you can't destroy an evergreen card just because it was over-used when the reason for it being over-used was that the class had been designed around a set of specific cards of which that card was one.
Now that it's gone I'm very interested to see what 2-drops Warrior gets in every expansion to make up for this.
*swings twice*
Try to understand that I'm not a regular Warrior player (it's my lowest class in level terms by 10 levels - 48 compared with Mage @ 58, rest at 60). I'm not saying these things because I'm invested in Warrior. I'm saying these things because I'm invested in seeing a game where all the classes are equally playable. Love or hate the pirates, they were one of the few decks that had a win rate against Cancer Druid. But Blizzard would rather nerf an entire other class than nerf the most OP card they have ever printed.
Probably gonna get hate for this but,
You fools don't realise that its a basic card right? Most other weapons have a rarity of rare and come from expansions so its only fair they have some effect on them. Why should a basic card be more powerful than rare cards?
Also, this nerf is well-deserved. If you start first, you can play this on turn 2 and kill any of your opponent's minions for both turn 1 and 2. Same thing happens if you start second, except you coin it turn 1.
Absolutely beautiful nerf.
Isn't efficiently killing your opponent's minions with your weapons what a Warrior is supposed to do?
then nerf other class cards, for instance fireball, frostbolt, flamestrike, etc.
Well played my friend
not sure the deck is complete... but its budget so i can find more cards. thanks for the list!
Pirate Warriors.
First you come as meta breakers;
Then you make us, control, tempo, c'thun
shelters us, patrons, dragon, etc, and make us look shameful of our golden portraits;Then, you stay there breaking metas, season after season and making us "other variations warrior decks" more ashamed;
But that wasn't enough, was it?
WinAxe is being nerfed because of you, scurvy dogs.
Not even a proper funeral pyre was appropriate since it was a basic card.
I'd rather see him go with Sylvanas, Ragnaros, Azure Drake and other non-broken must
havehad cards.Amen.
Why would you make a deck with only 2 3 mana cards?
On those rainy days you mulligan hard for Fiery War Axe and don't draw him only to draw him as your first card he was there for you a golden Fiery War Axe ready to smite thine bullshit 1 drop minions with too much health. RIP my friend, sad reacts only.
Nice deck. I upvoted. However I do not have all the cards for this deck to make it work .... any replacements for Fiery War Axe?
I love your post, great guide! But I'm on a tight budget... Replacement for Fiery War Axe ?
IMO either Heroic Strike or Wolfrider are your best options, but you should really beat the Illidan adventure ASAP so that you can unlock War Axe.
Sick deck, 143-0, first time legend. <3
Sadly
Swings twice
Damn you Ben Brode!!!
Damn you Team 5!!!
Swing swing. Warrior is the class I've always hated the most, but Fiery War Ace was what made Warrior a warrior. Now let's see all those other lovely weapons in decks.
