The main goal here is to have Kabal Lackey and Mana Bind in your opening 4 cards. This will let you bring him down from 60 to 31 armour/health, giving you a monumentally larger chance of defeating him. This is better than the Lackey and Counterspell combo as although that lets you keep your full health, you'll still hit a brick wall at the Frostmourne phase. You need to kill him before his seventh turn, and instantly removing 29 of his health is a pretty good technique.
Failing that, you need Vicious Fledgling on Turn 3. Attack the face (as long as you can keep yourself alive) and adapt him for Windfury, more attack and protect from spells and hero powers in that order.
In either case the rest of the deck consists of taunt minions and freezing spells to stall while you attack his face, as well as damage spells (and Polymorph) to remove problematic minions as well as to finish him off.
Replacements: Babbling Book can be swapped for Shimmering Tempest, and Pompous Thespian for something along the lines of Bilefin Tidehunter or Sunfury Protector. There's no getting around two Kabal Lackeys, Mana Binds and Vicious Fledglings.
Don't waste your time with this deck, even if it's possible, the number of retries before even getting a chance to try it is out of this world :
When you finally manage to get both card in your opening hand, you still need Vicious Fledgling before turn 3, deal with minions so that it won't kill it (or go face and kill you), manage to get windfury and +damage as quick as possible, and then, there is still a very high probability of an Obliterate or Saronite Chain Gang or Sludge Belcher or Blizzard which will probably kill too much tempo before you can finish him.
Try a murloc deck ... Got it in about 5 tries even without Molten Giant.
But you Know, thanks anyway for posting this deck, at least we know it is possible that way :p
Still works. Had to do more than 50 restarts (mostly because i didnt want to craft a second copy of game-winning secret) but this deck gets its job done
No answer to his taunts, no answer to his spells and a highly specific mulligan with a very low success rate. This deck is a waste of time.
This deck was ok, not that great but ok. Mulligans are a bit annoying, but if you get the right cards you have a chance to do it. If you can effort other decks, give it a try.
These is a little collection of every deck ive defeated the Lich King with:

After many attempts on many different toons, I broke down and spent some dust(280) and won on 1st try!!
Got the perfect mully to start it as well!
To be honest, every single mage deck had a very specific mulligan. Highly annoying of course. However, after hours of trying the Kel'thuzad method, then the counter spell one. I felt this was a much more effective tactic. As mentioned, keeping your own life didn't end up being as valuable as lowering the Lich King's life. I would recommend giving this deck a whirl.
First try, when I (after 15+ restarts) got the combo! Thanks!
This alteration won for me on the first try, even without pulling off the Kabal Lackey / Mana Bind combo:
- 2 Babbling Book
- 2 Fallen Sun Cleric
- 2 Pompous Thespian
- 2 Stubborn Gastropod
- 2 Tar Creeper
- 1 Cone of Cold
- 1 Polymorph
+ 1 Breath of Sindragosa
+ 1 Mana Wyrm
+ 2 Flamecannon
+ 2 Sorcerer's Apprentice
+ 2 Unstable Portal
+ 2 Arcane Intellect
+ 2 Flamewaker
I'm f2p, I've just been playing for a while now. If you have the old Wild cards for it, give it a shot!
well if you can get lucky you might win
nice almost a free to play deck thx for help with the help of ALLAH(GOD) i won it
I captured it in reference to your deck.
After many attempts, finally!!
