Folks over at InputDelay have made a detailed video guide for this deck if you're not too keen on reading all the text below. The link is at the bottom.
Why I made this deck:
I tried so many alex decks for this boss none of them did the trick for me. I decided to not play other people's decks and make my own and got him down on the first try. It's probably the rng karma that made me lose 26 times with other decks from bad rng that this deck was succesful on the first try with great rng. But I eventually decided if it helped me maybe other people might find it helpful as well so I decided to share the deck.
Deck explanation:
At first I put alex as a backup plan but then I removed her, so it's not really vital to this deck thus YOU DON'T NEED ALEXSTRASZA to make this work, if you were unlucky enough to not get her.
Your perfect starting hand is 2 wild growths and an innervate but something close along the lines would be nice as your minions are all costly. But if you by chance get gurubashi don't mulligan him.
What you need is a gurubashi berserker, ancient of war or ironbark protector as early as possible then use mark of nature with +4 health and taunt along with mark of the wild on one or more of them with healing touches to keep them alive long enough to finish grobbulus without alex.
The way this works is as long as you keep their health high enough grobbulus will only dmg you with his hero power as he will constanty sacrifice his minions to your taunter and those who might kill it will be removed by your spells. So try your best to save your heals for your big taunter(s) and don't use them on yourself unless you really need to.
Gurubashi berserker is the best and fastest way to win because after giving him taunt, grobbulus will keep sacrificing small minions on it to make it even bigger as well as his hero power which will keep buffing it. As long as you keep healing it and buffing it's health you can win before turn 8 as seen below. But if you didn't draw gurubashi it is also possible to win with ancient of war and ironbark protector as well, I have tried and won with just them too.
I hope this deck helps you as much as it helped me. you can take out some removals of your choice and add something you think you need; perhaps deathlords, stoneskin gargolyles, maexxna or voodoo doctor. Sludge belcher is not vital although on occasion it has delayed the game long enough for me to put down one of the vital minions (gurubashi, ancient and protector).
Tried the deck several more times won 7 times as of now. Here's a screenshot of one of the wins and also good semaritans Kizaru1(Atilla Akin), Eugene Yan, Matt_Sparks(MattSparks3.0) and Gnome and Mage have made a video defeating Hc Grobbulus with my deck, be sure to check them out :D
awesome deck, love u man!
The concede count before a card is played on Grobb heroic must be six figures and counting. This deck does nothing to slow that grim truth.
i dont even know why im doing all this....deck works after 20 concedes and 14 deaths.
Alright, I don't know about you guys, but I lacked an Ancient of War and Nourish, which I replaced with Kel'Thuzad and Druid of the Claw resepctively. I got really really lucky, but started off the game without the perfect mulligan (no Wild Growths, no Innervates, not even Gurubashi). I would play into a Nourish (give Mana Crystals) turn 5, Ancient of War to provide first wall (which goes down), Ironbark Protector as second wall (which he fails to break) and then double Mark of Nature on it, Healing Touch on it next turn, and then Kel'Thuzad down the turn after as soon as I remembered that the AI bugged out with Kel'Thuzad + Taunt. My health came pretty low, but a second Healing Touch sealed the deal :)
So, in short, if you lack one of the big taunts (or any other card for that matter), use Kel'Thuzad.
First try
After trying so many inner-fire Priest decks and failing hard it was so good to see this work, very happy thanks.
This deck is pretty difficult to win with, I ended up using it as a basic template but I put in Two Grim Patrons and Two Mulka's Champions. I got lucky and drew both Patrons and a Mulka early on. I also put in Two Savage Roars which helped to clean up.
good
easy win (2nd try for me after a few concede to get the muli right) 1x Wild Growth did it for me. Thanks friend
tried this deck 25 times, no luck, after round 5 he had board control with 2 5/6 oozes, 1 shotting my buffed up gurubashi berserker.
what finally did the trick was to have 2 grim patrons instead of the sludge belcher. you will need to buff + heal them as you will then be constantly spawning 1-2 every time he starts his turn. from there you can keep buffing and taunting and slowly killing him off.
This was exactly the right solution for me! There is a brief reference to using this on the strategy portion of the wiki page, and I appreciate the details here.
I found that if he even gets one Ooze/Mutate combo out its game over. You can't really catch up from 2 5/6 unless you already have an amazing board which I never seemed to have. I finally beat it using this deck and getting a ridiculously lucky hand with a Gurubashi that eventually became 24/1.
Like 20 attempts with one of the priest decks.. nothing. One attempt with this, killed him. 10/10 best deck for the worst boss, thanks!
first try for me, put a faceless in my deck and got the overkill.
poor grobbulus!
Managed first try win (after Alarm-o-Bot deck failed) with this deck (with changes since I don't have some of the weaker cards due to disenchant strats), I have to say it's insanely good. Mark of the Wild or Mark of Nature on Deathlord is fairly strong in the midrange. Also, I used a Ragnaros and 2 Force of Natures, which I feel won me the game.
I've been trying all the afternoon to get through this boss. After trying 4 decks and about 30 try, I found your decklist which was totally different from the priest or warrior I found earlier.
After some other try I felt like it was a bit too slow and relying too much on the board control you draw . So I decided to add some magic. I removed the 2 Wild Growth and I added 1 Astral Communion and 1 Dark Wispers. Also i missed the 2 Ancient of War so I replaced them with 2 Captured Jormungar but whatever, any high value card would have been okay too. This way you can expect to draw strong cards and bring them on the board instantly. Below is my win screenshot, one more turn and i could concede cause of his hero power or board refill.
Much to my surprise, I won on the first attempt. Gurubashi Berserker and cards that can heal it are indeed key. Earthen Ring Farseer, Ancient of Lore and Healing Touch all came into play to keep my Gurubashi Berserker alive. I was skeptical about Naturalize at first, but being able to kill a strong creature is pretty useful. This being said, quite a bit of luck may be needed so that he doesn't get to play his Echoing Ooze & Mutating Injection combo on turn 4 (with coin). In my winning game, which I won on turn 8 (with 9 mana thanks to Wild Growth), I was lucky that he didn't get to play this combo at all.
He seems to go face most of the time (if there's no taunt). In my winning run, he completely ignored my Gurubashi Berserker (granted, he couldn't kill it within one turn at any point in the game), but I've seen him attack and kill my 3/3 Grim Patron at one point, so it won't always happen.
Keep in mind, killing his Abomination allows to deal 2 damage to his other creatures, so there's strategy in that as well. If there is no urgency on the board, I'd suggest keeping Naturalize or Swipe for an Abomination.
I can see how this deck could win, but I was always just one or two turns away from making the play I needed to survive. It's just too slow. Mutating Injection is simply a death sentence without any answers at hand. I'll have to play around with this deck more, but I feel like Crazed Alchemist and Keeper of the Grove are going to prove more useful than cards such as Wrath or Starfall.
EDIT: Swapping in Crazed Alchemist for Ancient of War (because I don't have any) gave Gurubashi Berserker the legs he needed to go the distance. Once that guy had taunt and over 20 health, it was game over for Grobbulus.
Won at my 5th try, but i have not had Ancient of War and Nourish. Replace them by 2xDruid of the Claw and 2xVolcanic Lumberer. Well done, nice deck!
just used and it was great, one update i did was replace the two naturalizes for grim patron, made sense with his hero power
