Heroic Thaddius' Warlock
Hi everyone, and welcome to the final boss of the Heroic Construct Quarter: Thaddius! It is in my opinion one of the most fun battles in the add-on. With his Polarity Shift, it makes this game a little bit of a chess game.
Background
Thaddius has his Polarity Shift Hero Power which switches the attack and health of all the minions on the field. He also starts his first turn by summoning for free Feugen and Stalagg on the field, however they will not have their deathrattle, but two minions at 4/7 and 7/4 that keep switching their attack and health means that you'll get 11 damage to the face until you can deal with them. So unless you want him to "Kill!" us, here is a Warlock strategy to beat him.
Strategy
- To start off, I would like to say that this is based on a Zoo build, which means in mid-game you will usually want to Life Tap for extra draw and gain a hand advantage over Thaddius.
- To kick start the match-up you want to mulligan for a Soulfire and a Corruption as these two cards will eliminate the both Feugen and Stalagg swiftly. You will also want a 1 drop minion that you can play on your first turn.
- Edit: You can also switch Corruption for an Unstable Ghoul in the mulligan, as he takes care of Stalagg after the Polarity Shift whilst as usual, Soulfire will take care of Feugen. Thanks to Goge for bringing this up and giving us more options to deal with early game.
- Just to be clear, getting clear of both Feugen and Stalagg is the toughest part of the match-up but once done, things should go smoothly.
- After that, you want to control the board whilst buffing your Undertaker in the early and mid-game.
- You can use the Dire Wolf Alpha to take advantage of Polarity Shift and therefore continuously buff your other minions.
- Around turn 5 you will want to play either Feugen and Stalagg, especially if you have either a Shadowflame in hand or a Baron Rivendare on the field. Either minion will summon a (or two) Thadius when dead, which is an 11/11. Just try and play around polarity shift when you do so.
- Once the board is settled, you will be free to go for the face. You shouldn't have too much problems from then on.
The early game is the most difficult part of the game, but once you get rid of both Feugen and Stalagg, you should be fine. RNG doesn't play that big of a party in this match-up as you are playing a Zoo build and will be drawing a lot in mid game, making sure you can be mana efficient. Good luck guys and see you next week!
If you are having troubles with the rest of the Construct Quarter check my other F2P decks out for Patchwerk, Grobbulus or Gluth.
Here is a great game from Kizaru1 using this deck to beat Heroic Thaddius, check it out!
Edit: After considering everyone's opinion in the comment section, I decided to switch -2 Voidcallers for +2 Unstable Ghouls for couple of reasons: it helps avoid face damage in the early game, reduces the attack of the minions on board for the next turn and Voidcaller is actually pretty useless apart from buffing the Undertaker. After testing, the deck seems more reliable in the early game.
Best deck of the three listed to date. THANKS!
Having Soulfire and/or Corruption early saved it. Use this deck!
The best mulligan is not Corruption + soulfire imo, but Unstable Ghoul + Soulfire. On turn 2 you put down the ghoul and soulfire the 7/4. On Thaddius' turn, his 4/7 now becomes a 7/4 and your ghoul is a 3/1. He will ram his big minion into your ghoul and it dies from the deathrattle.
Granted this only works if he did not play a 1-drop.
Cheers for that insight, I was so focused on the original post without the Unstable Ghoul I failed to see that. I'll add it in the strategy.
Relying too much on RNG
Took a few tries, but then I mulligan'd a soul fire and nerubian egg, so I only took 7 damage from his legendaries. Nice deck.
I can't seem to ever get board control back. Even when I get corruption and Soulfire, by the time I have used them, he has 2-3 minions and they are raping my face. I Can't tap, as I usually have 15 or less hp and he coins out shade or something else, since he goes face, it is impossible to do anything but trade minions that I am behind while he just tears me down.
Man he really fucked me with two supercharges after having FOUR spiders on the board, ofc next turn after polarity shift, he had 4 5/1 minions....
5th try
Yay, one mulligan to get soulfire on starting hand. Overwhelmed by turn three but managed to kill off everyone and beat him to pulp with a thaddius. 6 hp left for me.
This deck actually works incredibly well. As other users have stated already, mulligan for soulfire/corruption combo against the Feugen/Stalagg opener that Thaddius starts with. I usually keep the egg as well, as it can be an out for removing them quickly. If two or three of these cards weren't in my hand by turn 3-ish, I'd just concede. I had to restart probably 10 times before getting an acceptable start (pretty rough), but once I had it this boss was a breeze. Double Thaddius killing Thaddius ftw. XD
Took me a few tries, but it worked amazingly in the end!
First try success. I know this is partly due to a lucky draw as usual, but the chance of having two Thaddius, is just too fun to pass. Beating Thaddius with two copies of himself is awesome.
+1
+1 for first try win.
I will say this though:
- No Corruption+Soulfire or double Corruption by Turn 2? Auto-concede
- It will take some RNG to get an early Thaddius out ASAP, and you'll need him
- You will most likely end with very low HP. I had 1 HP for FOUR TURNS and ended up winning somehow
- I don't see the point of Zombie Chow at all. Earlier/less costly River Croc, but +5 HP to him.
Zombie Chow + Dire Wolf is one way to clear Feugen or Stalagg. A Soulfire next round and they're both gone.
Took me five tries to draw Thaddius before Turn 6 and not discarded by Soulfire. Died horribly every time before that (those Lightning Bolts and Storms). Heroic mode, dice roll simulator more like...
Ahh okay, yeah I guess that's another way, but that uses 3 cards+discard and only a wolf on the field, whereas SF+Corr = 2 cards+discard and potential for 2 1-drops that aren't sacrificed. Plus, the Chow is pretty bad if used anywhere but for F/S because it will heal him, which you really, really, don't want.
Just beat this didnt even waste my time if I didnt get atleast an unstable ghoul and soulfire in my hand TY 4 deck list
First try! Great deck +1!
it doesn't work for me
even if i'm lucky enough to get soulfire + corruption in my starting hand, once turn 3 dark cultist or turn 5 sludges comes out i'm done, am i having the worst drawluck or how did you guys beat thaddius with this deck??
Success with this exact deck, first round.
