Heroic Thaddius' Warlock
Hi everyone, and welcome to the final boss of the Heroic Construct Quarter: Thaddius! It is in my opinion one of the most fun battles in the add-on. With his Polarity Shift, it makes this game a little bit of a chess game.
Background
Thaddius has his Polarity Shift Hero Power which switches the attack and health of all the minions on the field. He also starts his first turn by summoning for free Feugen and Stalagg on the field, however they will not have their deathrattle, but two minions at 4/7 and 7/4 that keep switching their attack and health means that you'll get 11 damage to the face until you can deal with them. So unless you want him to "Kill!" us, here is a Warlock strategy to beat him.
Strategy
- To start off, I would like to say that this is based on a Zoo build, which means in mid-game you will usually want to Life Tap for extra draw and gain a hand advantage over Thaddius.
- To kick start the match-up you want to mulligan for a Soulfire and a Corruption as these two cards will eliminate the both Feugen and Stalagg swiftly. You will also want a 1 drop minion that you can play on your first turn.
- Edit: You can also switch Corruption for an Unstable Ghoul in the mulligan, as he takes care of Stalagg after the Polarity Shift whilst as usual, Soulfire will take care of Feugen. Thanks to Goge for bringing this up and giving us more options to deal with early game.
- Just to be clear, getting clear of both Feugen and Stalagg is the toughest part of the match-up but once done, things should go smoothly.
- After that, you want to control the board whilst buffing your Undertaker in the early and mid-game.
- You can use the Dire Wolf Alpha to take advantage of Polarity Shift and therefore continuously buff your other minions.
- Around turn 5 you will want to play either Feugen and Stalagg, especially if you have either a Shadowflame in hand or a Baron Rivendare on the field. Either minion will summon a (or two) Thadius when dead, which is an 11/11. Just try and play around polarity shift when you do so.
- Once the board is settled, you will be free to go for the face. You shouldn't have too much problems from then on.
The early game is the most difficult part of the game, but once you get rid of both Feugen and Stalagg, you should be fine. RNG doesn't play that big of a party in this match-up as you are playing a Zoo build and will be drawing a lot in mid game, making sure you can be mana efficient. Good luck guys and see you next week!
If you are having troubles with the rest of the Construct Quarter check my other F2P decks out for Patchwerk, Grobbulus or Gluth.
Here is a great game from Kizaru1 using this deck to beat Heroic Thaddius, check it out!
Edit: After considering everyone's opinion in the comment section, I decided to switch -2 Voidcallers for +2 Unstable Ghouls for couple of reasons: it helps avoid face damage in the early game, reduces the attack of the minions on board for the next turn and Voidcaller is actually pretty useless apart from buffing the Undertaker. After testing, the deck seems more reliable in the early game.
I know this is a frustrating battle guys, but I gotta give it to this deck. It works pretty well. It took me about 10 tries to beat him but I finally did. The key to this deck is to continuously muligan for corruption and soul fire of the first turn. if you don't get either- concede and start again. No reason to waste time on a for sure loss. Hope this helped! thanks for the deck.
This deck is pure RNG.
1. Condition: Draw soulfire, nerubian egg, corruption or concede
2. Draw 2 of the cards above to deal with stalagg and feugen. Nerubian will kill itself killing one of them, usually after Thaddius already played some more minions. Hope to get answers to these minions.
3. Start building a board, hope he doesn't lightning storm everything.
4. Warlock hero power can't be used anymore since he now already has you at <10. Have damn luck in topdecks to draw exactly what you need for the situation.
5. Hope he doesn't lightning bold your face a few times
Forgot: Pray that he doesn't supercharge his minions
Took several tries to get the opening 3 moves on point but finally got it.
STRONGLY recommend Soul Fire and Unstable Ghoul to be ready to burn on Turn 2. If you can pull a 1 mana minion for turn one, do it. Just incase he decides to drop the spider or use lightening bolt, at least you'll be ready for it.
What I did, got the opening 3 cards, discarded any that werent the 2 necessary ones. Retrieved the next cards. If those weren't it, play turn 1 to see what you get. If you still havent gotten either cards, concede and start over. If you got 1 but not the other, give turn 2 a chance. IF still no go, start over. You'll have exhausted a 26% chance to have both by/on turn 2's draw (assuming you mulligan all 3 cards)
Doing this will save 7 HP you would otherwise take dropping an Egg instead or using Corruption. You may need the HP later.
This! I beat this the first time I managed to get both cards at the start. Also I totally missed the fact that Feugen and Stalagg's deathrattles will summon Thaddius for you with ONLY ONE of them! Eliminating both of Thaddius's minions at the start counts as both of them "dying" this game, so the first one of them you play will trigger Thaddius. I killed Thaddius with himself. :D
First try!
did it in 2nd try! thanks so much
We used a bit more expensive Warlock deck, check it out below!
Great deck nailed him first try! Would like to point out that even if you don't get soulfire or corruption first hand the nerubian eggs work nicely as well. My initial draw started me off with 2 eggs and a soulfire. Piece of cake from there.
Another great deck, only took 2 attempts to beat him.
This Deck = Don't have Soulfire + Corruption in your opening hand? Concede and try again.
Not necessarily, barring the SF or Corrupt. the Nerubian eggs work nicely as well.
Awesome deck! First try, Didnt look very promising until I got board control, I sat at 1 hp for like 5 turns just clearing his board every turn while he only had 1 card. Nerveracking but was a great game! Thanks
Took me a few tries - but it worked in the end ! I was pretty close during three more games. Thanks so much !
Great deck thank you. The best part about it is that once you take care of his stalag/feugen, as soon as you get 1 of yours up (feugen or stalag), you can trade it for whatever you want and summon thaddius right away. I got my Thaddius up on the 6th turn, then on 7 gave him taunt with defender of argus (I made a few deck changes, but that was only because i don't have all the cards).
I admire all you who "beat him on the first try" but for me it just impossible. First you can pretty much concede if you don't pull SF or Corruption. Secondly, even if you get the "twins" out of the way, he starts pumping out Sludge Belchers every turn. It's not much you can do about that. I would seriously like tow know how you "beat him so easily" and how this deck is "not depended on RNG". No matter how you do it, you will most likely lose 11 life directly. Add then Shade, Unstable and Lightning storm and it's GG, so how do you beat that easily?
On my first try, I started with Soulfire and mulligan'd into Corruption. Piece of cake. +1
Dead on turn four, five tries in a row. This deck must require a miracle of RNG. No idea why it's so highly rated.
I wouldn't call it an "RNG miracle", but clearing the Feugen and Stalagg ASAP is essential. I'm sure you read the strategy, but shoot for Corruption and Soulfire to start, or at least an Unstable Ghoul if you have the Soulfire, and it should be a walk in the park. I was able to play Corruption > Leper Gnome > Soulfire on turn one, and the rest of the match I literally just toyed with Thaddius. In fact, had my Ghoul not triggered twice due to Riverdare being on the field, I would've had four Thaddii of my own, rather than just the two. :-)
didnt actaully need that much of naxx card. right after i switch out some naxx for warlock class card, i beated him right away.
first round with voidwalker + power overwhelmed and soulfire took them down
