Hey Guys,
With a lot(!) of testing and refining. Also talking to some more experienced Secret Mage / Mage Players in general I came up with a Decklist, that consists of the Secret Package with the common advantages of taking board control easily, destroying win conditions with Counterspell / Potion of Polymorph and combining those with the two powerhouses of Burgly Bully together with Archmage Antonidas. I often felt that in the current Meta where Medivh lacks consistency due to a lot of weapon removals or the need the play cheap spells in order to stay in the game a swap over to Anto did the trick for me and brought this Deck from a high Tier2 to the Tier1 it deserves..
With enough attention / upvotes I am going to write a detailed Overall Strategy Guide.
Mulligans are common Secret Mage ones, such as: Lackey, Mana Wyrm and Arcanologist. Frostbolt against Classes with gamebreaking early threats (Aggro Druid for example)
Question: Why no Babbling Book?? (is by far the most common question I get when playing this Deck)
Answer: Its way worse than any other Drop you could get in your starting hand. Sure it is a One Drop that does "SOMETHING" but still there are chances you are going to get spells that you are never gonna use anyways. Sure getting a third counterspell or smth like that feels amazing but imo it is a wasted slot way better taken by Antonidas + Iceblock or some other lategame options.
Common Matchups:
Jade Druid: Make sure to not counterspell a Coin... Try to go agressive for board and rush him down before he gets huge taunters up. You lose if the Jade Ramp is too fast.
Aggro Druid: KEEP FROSTBOLT IN YOUR OPENING HAND! Try to get value out of your spellbender. Play for board and know when to go face. Most common turning point usually is Living Mana - As soon as they drop it most of the time it is a good idea to not trade, maybe drop a counterspell against their buffs. Usually you should be a in a good spot if you removed earily threats efficiently with the Pyro+Iceblock combo. If you face a lot of Aggro Druids maybe tech for a Volcanic Potion.
Hunter: Battle for board. Play smartly around Unleash + Hyena. Even matchup depending on the start of the game. Always keep in mind that turn 5+6 powerplay of Rhino + Highmane
Silence Priest: Iceblock saves your ass against the OTK. Go face whenever possible while still removing value cards like Northshire Cleric and Radiant Elemental
Quest Rogue: Only trade when you risk losing the board control. Try to fake a counterspell and maybe get a gamewinner on a vanish or even a crystal core (happened more than I want to admit..)
Taunt Warrior: Hardest matchup IMO. Prey for them not running Armorsmith. Always calculate using a face spell on a taunt minion because he might just clear the board again and you will end up with no board and lost damage to face.
Miracle Rogue: Dont overvalue counterspell. Razorpetals.. Backstabs.. Just hope for the best. Maybe they outplay themselves and play an Auctioneer into Potion of Polymorph. Capitalize on their slow starts and deal sticky damage to the face. Burgly Bully works wonders in this matchup.
Pirate Warrior: Fire War Axe is OP. If they get a buff on that you are in a bad spot. If not - Just keep and eye on a potential Frothing Berserker or Southsea Captain. Face damage is not as important as keeping board control. Try to minimize their pirate synergy as much as possible.
Mirror: Prey for the coin. Always play for board. Burgly Bully should give you the upper hand in this. Iceblock might save ur ass aswell. All in all the combo of Antonidas + Bully works very well against all types of mages.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask in the comments. I am constantly keeping an eye on them :) GL playing!
Why no board clear cards?
The best opener for this deck is;
Mana Wyrm > coin > Kabal Lackey > any Secret
into a turn 2 frost bolt or Valet ( Valet preferred ). That's 8 or 9 damage turn 2 and 10 more on turn three with bodies + hero power alone, if valet is down. Unless you are countered by a turn 1 Taunt by your opponent, which you will see as you have the coin..
otherwise gg
Can you make a video demonstrating play against control Paladin? Thanks!
Hello guys!
I tried out this deck as well, although I made some changes = - Kabal Lackey / + Pyros ; - Potion of Polymorph / + Mana bind which I am explaining in the video.
I was matched against a quest taunt warrior (bleh) and it was pretty easy match but I think I had to think about a lot of decisions, especially playing into brawl / trying to bluff the counter spell to that brawl. Everything worked out so I won :)
Hope you can enjoy the game play and if you did please consider subscribing to my channel to support me! :) Thanks
Also, I'd like to know your winrate vs Taunt warrior. Probably below 50% right?
Also very terrible vs zoo warlock.
This deck is terrible against murloc/aggro shaman as well as quest warrior. Absolute garbage.
Also, you have no guide against paladin.... Awesome deck though. I'm liking it thus far.
What to do against quest priest?
Tech choices for board floods like shaman? What would you trade in for an AoE potion?
I traded out both primordial glyphs. One for a cult sorcerer and the other for a flamestrike. The flamestrike alone has saved me from some pretty terrible situations.
Swapping primordial glyphs is a terrible idea. They're definitely core with how flexible they can be. Discovering more burn or secrets is huge in mage decks like this and burn mage. If you want a volcanic potion the flex slots in this deck list are ice block, kabal lackey and firelands portal. You can also cut antonidas/burgly but I wouldn't cut tony without cutting the bully as well.
I usually end around rank 5 and I am 6-6 at rank 13 with this deck.
So you're saying that by the 7th day of the season you're rank 5 and then just stop? Maybe make this comment on the 27th if you want sympathy.
Feeling a bit bummed out with this deck so far. I'm @ 5-10 with it and I've only played antonidas once where I was able to get 4 fireballs but it was jade druid which we know is the king against all control decks so even with 24 pts of dmg in hand he was gonna shut me down the next turn with a 6/7/8 on board. I crafted antonidas and one burgly for this season to change it up and try a new secret deck (I made it to rank 3 last season with more traditional secret decks).
I guess I'll keep at it but it just feels hopeless against aggro and underpowered against control. I hate how rng sets it up that I NEVER even draw the star cards of the deck game after game after game. Not even on mulligan.
0-5. And no, don't call me a bad player. I'm a Legend player. This deck has zero board control. There's only so much removal spells you can use before you get overwhelmed. Not to mention every removal spell you're using is wasting potential burn.
Lol nice edit. 5 games where I didn't even come close to establishing board control due to lack of clears and minion presence is enough to recognize the shortcomings of a deck (as you even admitted to last night).
You did. You said something like "Wow now that you mention it you're right. I don't know why I overlooked that." Keep lying to yourself though.
