Come in and Warm your Frozen Boots by the Fire!
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Gunnolf, and I am originally from the Land Down Under a.k.a. Australia. I am an avid gamer that has acquired a real passion for card games, which originated from my humble beginnings as a Yu-Gi-Oh collector and eventually grew from my dabbling in Cardfight Vanguard and Buddyfight, until we reached the game we know as Hearthstone.
I've played Hearthstone since the days of classic, with multiple accounts on both EU and NA servers. Despite having reached the Rank of Legend and my own personal mentality of equating 'having fun' with 'winning', I am not really a fan of meta power-grinding & net-decking, not that there is anything wrong with that. Therefore, I enjoy thinking about new, cool and fun deck ideas that push boundaries while also allowing you to win and those are what I want to share with you guys every-time I post a decklist.
I have presently become a contributing writer to WILDHS and will be posting articles there on a semi-regular basis, regarding deck-archetypes the status of the meta as well as how to get the most fun out of this game even if you aren't a big spender. If any of this sounds interesting, then I highly recommend that you check out of the website, as the writers and the owner himself are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet with great in-game knowledge (link to be website can be found HERE). You can also follow me on Twitter for latest updates.
If you genuinely like my content and would like to see me produce more of it, then please consider supporting me on Patreon. This is by no means necessary but it will definitely help me out in the long run. Thanks for Reading ^^
Deck Introduction
Hey guys and welcome back for another one of my glorious, if I do say so myself, decks. This one is probably one of my personal favorites due to the sheer amount of time I spent on perfecting the actual list. Therefore, if you are anything like me and enjoy the grinder playstyle, then this is potentially the deck for you as it packs a lot of value and is strong enough to survive against aggressive deck with its tech.
We had a great addition to the archetype with the release of Frost Lich Jaina in Knights of the Frozen Throne that was able to actually replace Alexstrasza that was considered a staple in many, many mage decks.
With the subsequent Expansion of Kobolds & Catacombs we got another great addition to the deck in the form of Zola the Gorgon. She has replaced Manic Soulcaster due to the simply fact that returning a crucial card to your hand is far superior to placing it in your deck. Furthermore, unlike Youthful Brewmaster there is no tempo-loss due to the fact that she creates a copy.
Mulligan Guide and Match-ups
Warrior (35-21 Favored): As it is usually Pirate Warrior you mulligan heavily for cards like Kazakus, Volcanic Potion, Gluttonous Ooze, Frostbolt, Doomsayer, Mad Scientist etc. Generally the deck has a lot of anti-aggro options that don't impact it's value in the lategame.
Shaman (Control: 10-6 Favored | Token: 11-5 Generally Favored | Aggro: 19-11 Favored): Against shaman in general, no matter what archetype it is, you are usually favored. You want to mulligan for Polymorph, Doomsayer and your early game minions. In case of control shaman you want to space out your deathrattles to avoid getting destroyed by Devolve. Do your best to suicide Pyros (even if it means pinging it off) and Piloted Shredder and possibly even Fireball your own Sylvanas Windrunner to guarantee N'Zoth, the Corruptor value. Polymorph targets in order of priority are White Eyes, Sylvanas Windrunner.
Rogue (Mill: 1-4 Unfavored | Miracle: 5-2 Favored | Oil: 6-3 favored): Mill is almost an autoloss as they have to draw really badly to lose the game. For Miracle you want to mulligan for Polymorph and for oil you'll be needing Reno Jackson, possibly on turn six.
Paladin (Control: 9-2 Heavily Favored |Murloc-Dude: 7-5 50/50): Usually control pali loses unless they recognise the match-up and tempo-out threats faster than what you can deal with. Always mulligan for anti-aggro tools and early game minions just because of the prevalence of dudes and murlocs.
Priest (Inner Fire: 6-1 Favored | Reno: 12-9 50/50 | Big Priest: RNG related): You want to mulligan for Polymorph to get rid of their big inner fired minion. In the case of reno priest the addition of the Shadowreaper Anduin made the match-up a 50/50 as it pushed down renomage in the tier list.
Druid (Jade: 4-11 Unfavored | Aggro: 19-13 Favored but draw dependent) | Malygos/Combo: 0-3 Heavily Unfavored): Generally the class is a bane. Mulligan for anti-aggro tools and early game minions.
Warlock (Zoo: 5-0 Favored | Demonlock: 2-1 Favored | N'zoth Renolock: Heavily Favored): You want to be proactive so early game minions to winning the match-ups are key!
Hunter (Face: 8-1 Heavily favored | Giant (yes this is a thing): 0-2 Unfavored): Mulligan for aggro/midrange and you'll probably win.
Mage (Exodia: 7-6 50/50 | Tempo: 10-4 Favored | Freeze: 13-5 Favored): Generally you'll need Ice Block, a small board and reno to be able to deal with all 3 archetypes. In the case of tempo make sure that you kill their Flamewaker (no.1 priority). When doing so however, make sure to test for Duplicate.
Win Conditions
The Primary Win condition for this deck is N'Zoth, the Corruptor. Luckily, however, apart from the aforementioned deathrattle swing turn, with this deck you have a secondary and third win condition that revolve around Kazakus potions and Frost Lich Jaina!
Also do bear in mind that when you have Frost Lich Jaina in play, Ragnaros the Firelord deals damage and heals you for the same amount thus propelling your ability to survive deeper into fatigue.
Tech Choices
Even though this is a grinder list, it is necessary to tech to the meta to combat it. Given that a huge part of it is essentially combo decks cutting a card like piloted shredder for Deathlord makes a lot of sense. If this proves to be inadequate then I recommend teching in an additional Dirty Rat in place of Forbidden Flame.
Author's Notes
I enjoy deck-building a multitude of interesting decks that are both entertaining and Legend viable (with some odd Free-to-Play lists mixed in). So if you like this deck (or anyone of my other ones) consider leaving a thumbs up, as it really helps in the long run! :)
Thank you guys for all your support and if you have any suggestions, let me know.
Would you replace anything with Hex Lord Malacrass? I swapped a Mad Scientist for it but maybe Duplicate would be better because thats more of a value card than anything else.
stop bumping all your decks into new expansion listings with no card changes its just like clickbait when we search new decks you lose respect like this every expansion you do it.
I'm not bumping all my decks but a lot of them have received new support so I am slowly bringing them all up to speed.
This particular one doesn't have substantial card change but it needed an update with regard to dealing with combo decks hence the Deathlord inclusion and the small "tech" section in the guide.
You're free to check the other decks as well if you want to verify what I'm saying but something has been updated in every list this time around whether it is the actual decklist or the guide itself.
Saw the recent update, really nice to see that you haven’t forgotten about this archetype!
(And am looking forward to your Boomsday updates!)
I assure you that there will be plenty of those coming ;)
I have a couple of decks for the start but primarily I will be updating a ton of my old decks with new cards. I have a new renomage list coming up as well. As this is, I think it's pretty solid now as a grinder deck but I might sub out the Piloted Shredder for a Deathlord for combo breaking potential. But we'll see ;)
Replacing Shredder doesn't bother me too much (considering the infuriating moments when it gave me Doomsayer while I was ahead on board control), and I definitely can get behind your Deathlord suggestion.
Anyway, what are your thoughts regarding additional anti-combo tech such as Dirty Rat and Potion of Polymorph? (E.g. Would we have to sacrifice too much in order to make room for another two cards?)
Given that the single Deathlord (by itself) won't consistently pull the desired target, why not shore up your chances with some extra "fishing poles"?
No Potion of Polymorph for this deck. It's a grinder list so the goal is maximum value all the time. I have other reno lists that run full tech packages that I'll be releasing in the future. I can get behind Dirty Rat though. Would probably cut Forbidden Flame for it.
The guide is a little bit lacking for this one so when I do revisit it, I'll make sure to do a proper type up! ^^
Hey Gunnolf! I've always wanted to try my hand at a Reno mage list, especially a Grinder list! How well would you say this list performs in the current Wild meta?
It performs quite well. However, you will have two very negative match-ups in the forms of Malygos druid and Nagalock (also mill decks but those are rare). Other than that you should be able to deal with most other decks.
Any sub for Pyros? I dont have him :(
Well Pyros extends your value reach quite a bit, but that being said you can always replace him with another value generator. Kabal Courier could work or potentially just Babbling Book! ^^
this is my kinda deck and info onzola really made me relise how better than soul caster it is thanks :)
You're welcome ^^. On a side note I got completely blind-sided by how expensive this deck is haha ~20k Dust. That's some serious value there!
Your thoughts on Medivh and Sindragosa?
Excellent question! When it comes to this particular deck, I don't like either of them. That is not to say that they are bad cards, on the contrary, the are very good. The reasons as to why I chose not to include them in this list can be summed up as follows:
1) Sindragosa: The card is a wonderful resource generator but I feel it doesn't make quite enough of an impact when played to justify running it. Furthermore, the number of luckluster legendaries in wild are quite high and as a result it is always a little bit of a gamble. That being said, including her in the deck is by no means wrong in any way.
2) Medivh, the Guardian: So I've debated with quite a few people about this card's viability. We all agree that he's a good card and has the potential for monster swings. However, when it comes to this grinder deck I don't play him for two reasons: a) I don't run enough big spells for the Atiesh procs to be large enough consistently (i.e. lacking Meteor etc.) and b) weapon removal (with Acidic Swamp Ooze and Gluttonous Ooze) was a big thing at the time of creation.
Given the rarity of pirate warrior at the moment though, Medivh, the Guardian's value has gone up since fewer and fewer people are running heavy weapontech. Therefore, more often than not you'll get more of your charges off.
Hope that helped! ^^
