Hi! I'm a legend player from Sweden. This is my take on the Exodia Mage. I will be changing it throughout the season. Feel free to comment anything from your results with the deck to potential changes.
This is a combo deck which tries to stall the game until it has all of the combo pieces necessary. When you have them in your hand, you will have an infinite amount of fireballs for free. You can deal as much an infinite amount of damage to your opponent, at least until they die ;).
Combo
The combo is you play Sorcerer's Apprentice x2, then Molten Reflection x1, and then Time Warp. Then the next turn you play Archmage Antonidas into the second Molten Reflection on of the Sorcerer's Apprentice. You have the mana for it and you don't need the extra spell. Then you got infinite fireballs for 0 mana!
Mulligan
The mulligan is; obviously the quest, Babbling Book, Primordial Glyph, Shimmering Tempest, Arcane Intellect, Doomsayer, Loot Hoarder, Bloodmage Thalnos. You can also keep cards such as Frostbolt and Volcanic Potion vs aggro.
Thank you so much for showing lowlife creatures with 0 braincells how to make this complete game unbearable boring and frustrating..THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Just keep the cheap spells and use them when your hand is full:)
hope this isn't too late
Cut one of the Cabalist's Tomes. It can be hard to play 2 of them at times
To what NairbNitram said.. I did that and replaced it with Ghastly Conjurer which works pretty well in the deck. You also get some nice taunts to stall towards your combo
So you need to draw 5 specific cards AND complete the quest AND hold long enough not to get killed in the mean time?
WTF??? Is this like once in a blue moon meme deck??
Welcome to the wonderful world of freeze mage.
Started off as a meme, but it is actually pretty good. I climbed to rank 5 with it a week ago. I haven't been able to climb to legend with it sadly. I climbed to legend with a classic freeze mage list I made yesterday, so I'll see how this list performs in legend now ^^. You should try it if you have the cards, but I wouldn't recommend crafting it right now if you don't since there are more competitive freeze mage lists in the current meta. Classic freeze mage is the best right now.
Just a question - What happens if any of those 5 cards are sitting at the bottom of the deck? Is this deck able to stall the game long enough to go the ~20 rounds required to get to it?
Sometimes I have drawn all of my deck yes. However since you can find molten reflection from any of the random cards, it's usually very unlikely that they are the LAST cards. The thing about this deck is that if you are able to stabilise with a good amount of hp left, you are usually able to keep doing so, and draw your deck. I think this deck has card draw of 14, if I'm not mistaken (when archanologist draws secrets). Since you draw 3-4 cards in mulligan, you will not need to survive for 20 turns to get the last card in your deck. You just need about maybe 14 turns to draw your deck if you get your card draw cards early. I also pick arcane intellect from glyph often as well, which means even more card draw. Try it out, the draw potential of this deck is really great!
Replacement for Thalnos?
I would put it Novice Engineer since that's what I use him for almost all of the time. He isn't as crazy good as he was in the old freeze mage. But I would recommend him since you can do something like Thalnos frostbolt, or Thalnos Blizzard.
I was playing this Exo Mage as a priest, pulling off a Divine Sprite/Inner Fire thing. I had 30 health, Nage had barely touched me and was so easy to heal. I had this bi**h down to 1 health and had busted 2 Ice Blocks on her. She pulled this sh*t on me and nailed me with free fireball after fireball. At first I was going to be a sore loser and conceded but I thought, "no, that's just not cool, I'm going to give her the win" and she took my health down from 30 to 0 fireball after fireball. It was SICK!!! Needless to say, I'm making the deck as we speak! Thanks for the list! I've been looking on my go to sites for HS & hadn't found the list & the person I played either doesn't want to be my friend, humph! Lol or didn't notice the request yet. Would love a guide to read if you have the time!
Awesome! I wish I would be vs you when I the play this. I have played it so much, but people concede about 65% of the time for me. That's my biggest problem playing this, it ruins fun. This deck is a lot of won when it works though. Killing a druid from over 50 hp, feels so satisfying. I will make a guide when I have time, so check back here every now and then. Until then you can check the comments since there are at least some saying how the combo works. Good luck!
It doesn't get boring for me lol. The deck is actually pretty good if you play it really well. I got to rank 5 with it two days ago (I didn't play at all before the Un'Goro this season). It's nothing amazing but it's something considering I've only been playing it for 5 days. I would say the deck is even harder to play than freeze mage, at least for me since I have so many hours on freeze mage. There are so many small decisions which you probably don't even notice, I know I didn't at first. These are the difference between wins and losses. I am still working on refining the deck. I think calling it bad now wouldn't be very wise.
Well explained. I have a freeze mage giants list as well, on this account. I find it more viable but not as fun. I run double Arcane Giants and Molten Giants for the extra consistency, and it can let you win the game without Alexstraza. The list you can find got me to rank 4 yesterday.
I updated the deck since I'm doing some testing right now. I will answer the second suggestion first, since it is easier.
The way I like to play frostbolt is as a card vs an aggro deck. I mulligan for it to use it at turn 2, mostly. Medivh's Valet will not work at turn two, although it is an interesting suggestion. I have tried it but I prefer frostbolt for that reason. The deck also has 2x Archanologists now which means it might be better, yes.
Gadgetzan Auctioneer seems interesting, and it does certainly make sense, but not in this meta. You would only have 4 mana left after playing it (on turn 10), which means it would be rare to cast more than 1 spell. 6 mana draw a card is pretty bad, even with the 4-4 body. Mage doesn't have innervate nor prep, so it would be hard to draw enough cards. Also, since pirates and quest rogues are around, you will be happy to survive to turn 10 without have the ice block popped. Another thing to note is that is that at turn 10, which is where we would play it, we probably need to play freeze and draw at the same time, or even secrets. We usually use up a lot of mana as a freeze mage. The only time I would consider playing it, is with a frost nova on turn 9, but then you would be better off with a lower cost cycle card imo. If you freeze the board with him, and he stays alive (which is soooo much to ask for), he could be good. I wouldn't recommend it.
I will try Medivh's Valet though with the new build! Good luck with the deck!
As opposed to what? Quest Rogue?
At least quest rogue can get countered more easily
If you want to counter this, play dirty rat. Ugh man, it feels so bad to loose any combo piece to that guy.
What's not healthy is the preponderance of zero-decision aggro decks like pirate warrior. The combo deck archetype is actually really good for this game. Blizzard needs to bring back mill rogue.
