4/16/17 Update
+1 Cabalist's Tome and +1 Vaporize / -1 Spellbender and -1 Pyroblast. There's more work to be done on this deck, but I've found these to be suitable replacements.
4/9/17 Update
I'm excited to see so many people have positive experiences with this deck! I personally have been getting equal losses to wins, so it's not 100% viable as-is. That said, I'm not that great of a Hearthstone player. I make lots of mistakes in games. Your milage may vary based on your skill and luck.
As per user ra1ndrop's suggestion, I've been trying replacing Spellbender and Pyroblast for Vaporize and Cablist's Tome. I'm still having about the same 50:50 success rate, but this may fit your playstyle better than the default deck.
I've noticed some players with quest cards have caught on to the Kabal Lackey + Counterspell on turn 1. Normally most people only have The Coin as a counter to this "combo", but Rogues have Counterfeit Coin, Backstab, Preparation, and possibly Shadowstep as potential counters. In any case, them losing a card is always better than nothing.
Again, if you find changes to this deck that work for you, let me know and I'll try to play them!
4/8/17 Update
I'm personally having mixed success with this deck. Usually 6 wins to 4 losses per 10 games played. Still very draw-dependent, so luck does play into it. I'm going to play around with different cards and post back with what looks better. You will want to replace cards as you see fit for your playstyle.
To be honest, I'm not that great of a Hearthstone player or deck builder (this deck is largely based on the deck mentioned below, with small changes to make it standard), but I have a lot of fun with this deck. This deck is built around being fun to play instead of strictly a competitive deck.
Please note the new Mulligan guide since it includes a fun quest card killer.
Overview
Modified (Rank 20-5) Aggro-Midrange Secret Mage deck. Card replacements have been made to have more useful secrets and more consistent secret pulling (praise Arcanologist!). I've gone from 17 to 13 with this deck over the past few days, so I'm not sure if you can really 20 to 5 like the original.
Replacing Wild Cards from the Original Aggro-Midrange Secret Mage Deck
Card draw from Azure Drake replaced with Arcanologist. Ethereal Conjurer replaced with an extra secret, Mana Bind.
Mulligans
Try for Babbling Book, Kabal Lackey, and any secret you can get. Arcanologist might work in lieu of Babbling Book.
If you play first: Kabal Lackey and Counterspell are quest killers. If you counter someone's quest card, they'll often times quit (which is pretty funny). Additionally, don't keep Mana Bind since you'll likely end up with a quest card that's useless to this deck. That said, quest cards may fall out of favor for most classes over the next few weeks, so adjust as needed.
Card Replacements
I'm not very good at card choices in my decks, but luckily this deck is pretty flexible for what you can swap out. Be sure to comment what you think is good and what you think is bad and I'll try it the suggested changes.
Generally speaking, the core of this deck is Babbling Book, Kabal Lackey, Arcanologist, Medivh's Valet, Kirin Tor Mage, Ethereal Arcanist, Kabal Crystal Runner and a healthy mix of secrets. If you swap out a secret, you should really replace it with another secret.
In the original deck, Potion of Polymorph was included, but I've taken it out because of how it interacts with Mirror Entity. It's no fun to have your opponent play a cheap card, then blow two secrets on copying a 1/1 sheep. This is probably the only secret combination that I dislike enough to suggest not using unless you can afford to leave secrets in your hand.
Pyroblast may be swapped out with another card to suit your tastes. You'll often burn through cards in your hand quickly, so I find it helpful as a final blow. Pyroblast has been swapped out for Cabalist's Tome in the latest deck build.
This is so fun because people don't expect things like Counterspell in this meta and they end up conceding.
Really good deck and easy to craft and use! thx for this, im having like tons of fun with this
So i was managed to hit rank 5 yesterday with the help of this deck! Jesus christ, it works so well in particularly every match up! It was a big surprise for me to win against quest warrior several times. It is so much fun when you have almost a full board with a Counterspell on your head and your opponent tries to cast Brawl. :D
I also was able to win the the help of Mirror Entity played on turn 9 having an Ice Block on me and the other quest warrior summoned I can wait no longer.Epic!
All in all, this is a very solid joy bringing deck! LOVE IT!
This deck got me from rank 25 to 13. From 25 to 16, it was mostly win streaks a few loses. Once i got from 15 to 14 i started to get more losses. Once i hit 13 it was like hitting a wall. This deck will take you quite a ways but it struggles hard with board clear. I found Mana Bind to be almost completely useless and swapped it with a Flamestrike to have at least some form of board clear. I had most of my trouble with quest warrior, but i think that's because their 2 mana, 8 atk ability is broken. I mean, they get to keep the skill even after the weapon breaks, WTF?!
Edit: Yup, i cant do nothing to Quest Warrior with this deck. Your only chance to win against a Quest Warrior with this deck is to go first and pull Kabal Lackey + Counterspell in mulligan. Good luck with that though.
Doesn feel consitent enough forladdering but it's SUPER fun. counterspell + mana bind against a priest who gave me free from amber for nothing and next turn I Molten relection'd Y'shaarj.
100% winrate against hunters but every slow deck that has removal or card draw just outvalues me
How are you dealing with aggro hunter, druid, shaman decks? Since reaching 6th rank it's almost every battle against them. What about an addition of x2 Volcanic Potion instead of one Babbling Book and one Ethereal Arcanist?
I had some luck with putting in Arcane Explosion. This was great against Murlocs, pally and this hunter deck, was not great otherwise. I took it back out, but if you are seeing them all the time, its worth.
Hi
First, thanks for your change-update, with these, I went rank 9 and it was long time ago.
I will keep playing to see what rank could I go.
I would rather suggest you to put Firelands Portal instead. It gives you burst damage and a board presence.
If you want to add Primordial Glyph, swap it with Mana Bind. Good luck!
Vaporize was kinda smelly for me, so I added Archmage Antonidas. Adding him for another win condition, especially with cabalist tome in this deck ,works really well.
Worst deck I've ever played
I think I have a better build!
Gone all the way up to rank 8 with this deck, still very fun to play.
I've kept the Pyroblast as a finisher, but swapped out the two Mana Wyrms with a Cabalist's Tome and an Arcane Giant. While the Mana Wyrm is a great one-drop, the deck would often run out of gas against Taunt Warrior and Freeze Mage. I also swapped an Arcane Intellect for a Primordial Glyph. I'm not sure it's actually better, but the Glyph gives you some flexibility.
Why no Primordial Glyph?
This deck's a lot of fun! I just drove it up from 16-10 over the last couple days. My favorite matchup is quest decks, the turn 1 counterspell can be funny if the opponent isn't paying attention, but countering / mana binding a rogue's crystal core is pretty fun too.
My most common losses are from being unable to close out a game at around 5 life and needing to pull the second fireball. I might swap something out for more card draw or possibly antonidas? I dunno though, the cheap entry price of the deck is my favorite part.
Thanks for posting this. I used it a for a little bit but ended up making my own using some of your ideas...
If you anyone gives it a try let me know what you think. Thanks.
Secret/Elemental Tempo Mage
Amazing deck! Great work! Thanks a lot for this cheap treasure ^^
This is so sick...I love it...:)
I've went on a winstreak from rank 20 to 11 and still didn't lose a match yet.Really fun deck to play.
