Greetings, travellers, I'm Subrezon, a Legend player from Germany. Creative deckbuilding is what I enjoy the most, and my joy peak is always before a new expansion. So here I am, with Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2! As with MSoG, I will build one deck for each class that is both interesting and potentially good. I will generally avoid self-building decks, like ones based around Quests or Elementals. But, Open the Waygate is sooo incredibly inspiring, that I ignored this rule for this one! Greet your new champion - OTK Exodia Mage!
What is this deck?
This deck relies on getting a combo that wins you the game. No, seriously. If no Ice Block is present for the enemy, he is dead as soon as you pull this one off. The combo is:
- Use 6 cards, generated by other cards like Shimmering Tempest, Primordial Glyph, or Babbling Book to get the Time Warp card into your hand. You also combine Shimmering Tempest with Steam Surger to get Flame Geysers.
- Play 2x Sorcerer's Apprentice for 4 mana, then use 1x Molten Reflection for 2 mana to get one more apprentice, then play Time Warp for 2 mana. (You float 2 mana, but it doesn't matter)
- Play Archmage Antonidas for 7 mana and another Molten Reflection on the apprentice for 1 mana to get 4x Sorcerer's Apprentice in total + a Fireball.
- Enjoy limitless Fireballs.
You stall the game using the removal from your deck and generated spells, cycle towards your combo and finish the game instantly with Exodia!
Why this deck?
Because OTKs are awesome! And because I've done Secret Mage already before MSoG... didn't shoot that time, but I hope this will!
Is this going to be competitive?
Maybe. This is a very crude version of the deck, it is very hard to tell how much card generation should be in it and how to balance draw/removal in it. But fully polished this deck can actually be a control-style deck with a reliable win condition vs. Jades! And all other control decks. Except self...
So, I hope you enjoyed this one, so stay tuned for more! Don't forget to drop a +1 and to check out all of Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2!
Subrezon's Theorycraft Series 2:
Note 1: there are some cards that can be used in this deck, that are not in this list. Loot Hoarder, Novice Engineer and Kabal Chemist are things being suggested to me. These are probably good enough for this deck, I will test the upon release.
Update 1: suddenly, a fact that Flame Geysers generated by Steam Surgers proc off Shimmering Tempest and work towards the quest struck me and I made this deck anew (kinda). Some changes:
- -1 Cabalist's Tome: too many cards in hand, too clunky to use
- -2 Mana Bind: Spells aren't likely to be used against you when you have no board (thanks to @kuroneko2370 for pointing that out)
- -1 Arcanologist due to the smaller number of Secrets
- -1 Acolyte of Pain: clunky cycle
- -1 Frost Nova: a little too situational, plus a lot of removal can be gotten through spell generation
- +1 Ice Block for survivability and Secret count for the remaining Arcanologist
- +2 Loot Hoarders for draw, chosen over Novice Engineers due to smaller removal count
- +1 Shimmering Tempest, +2 Steam Surger as the new and more consistent spell generation
Update 2: front page! Under "All" category! Astonishing!
Thanks to you guys for all the support, criticism and attention you gave this deck!
You forgot the second molten reflection in there bud! 4x sorc apprentice = infinite fireballz
2x sorcerer = 4 , 2x molten = 3 mana, 1x time warp = 1 mana
you have 4 mana mana reduction
archmage = 7 mana + one spell = 0 mana fireball forever. Exodia
You board pretty much empty using this deck, so there is not much incentive for opponent to play spell. Burgly Bully would sit there doing nothing IMO.
Played 3 games and won all 3 :) nice one
Was watching a friend play as taunt warrior. He got up to 70 hp before this happened. This has to be the strongest form of the deck, due to its vast amount of burst potential. This deck might not be refined, but it is goodi
And then you auto-lose vs anything that has a dirty rat.
10 wins and 3 losses. Got my new rogue! So glad I added the mana binds! It helps you make your quest, and sometimes brings in some amazing spells for 0 mana. I was able to get a Nether Portal from a Warlock :p. Try to stall as long as possible, and hang on to your freeze spells as long as you can. Use doomsayer to eat 7 dmg, anything to just buy you that one extra turn/draw. Discovered a 3rd ice block in a few games, which I recommend. Here are my tweaks after 3 wins and 2 losses:
-2 Steam Surgers
-2 Loot Horders
-1 Acolyte
-1 Blizzard
+2 mana binds
+1 cabalist's tome
+1 kabal courier
+1 kabal chemist
+1 frost nova
Pretty close to the deck I came up with after repeatedly failing with arcane giants and alex. I don't think i have doomsayers atm (just running 1), nor the Steam Surgers which is an interesting include. I took more card draw including coldlights and 1 copy of cabalist's tome, seems to work okay and even if i'm off before I have to blow Time Warp, I can usually draw into the final pieces to wombo combo and kill anything.

Can any of you advise a strategy against hunters? I'm getting absolutely T-recked by them.
Fitting in Glacial Shard in to this deck would be pretty nice b/c you get easier procs off of your Steam Surger and also you have more, cheaper freeze effects that could work for single big things (think druid quest decks early) without having to blow a blizzard or frost nova (also helps doomsayer activate more often when you don't have those cards.)
I'm playing with this deck right now
And I want to say, that it's well balanced and you don't need more Elementals for Steam Surger
It's ok, that you can't activate it as soon as you draw it
This is a freeze mage deck (more or less) so you have to be patient and play carefully
By the way, Babbling book can give you Flame Geyser, so activate Steam Surger is not so difficult
Hope everyone enjoys losing to pirates nonstep... this deck does nothing to address them.
Lol, why this shit is +140? This crap dont work, dont waste your time
Needs Cabalist's Tome. That card alone can complete 50% of your quest.
Very hard to pull off.
Funny as hell! A little bit clunky to get the quest done, but very nice to play.
Very clunky deck. Having to actually play the spells, not just obtaining it, slows you down more than what Ice Block and mass freezes can help with. Blizzard costs too much, so you aren't left with any mana to play those generated spells, so you never complete the quest.
Like some other comments mentioned, you don't have a lot of cards to generate spells, so you're going to need to draw nearly your whole deck to get the whole combo. On top of that, the steam surger only procs if youve played an elemental last turn, which would require you to draw and play that first, AND require you to play the surger the next turn, when you might want to do something else. If you want to use steam surger, you probably need more elementals so you can reliably proc it (also the spell he gives you is horrible as well, so youre not even happy when it goes off)
Youre right that more often than not you'll be drawing most of your deck, but having more ways to activate the quest can allow for the "miracle draws" to happen more often if the combo pieces happen to be at the top half of your deck.
Also, what do you think about Kabal Courier, Kabal Chemist, and/or Burgly Bully instead of the elementals. Correct me if im wrong, but i think the spells from those cards are on average better than flame geyser. (although the bully doesn't always work, he has a decent statted body and it puts your opponent in an awkward situation.
