This is an attempt at creating a Mage deck with the new quest Open the Waygate. The deck is build similarly to Freeze Mage but with a similar win condition as the old Echo Mage deck which was a very popular deck before the rotation.
I feel like running 4 giants is too risky but that's where Molten Reflection comes into play. It gives you more flexibility and more consistency by copying the one version of Giant you can play. You don't need 4 giants with Alexstrasza. The combo is as follows:
- Play 1 giant (Molten Giant or Arcane Giant) or both depending on what activator you have;
- Copy it with Molten Reflection;
- Play your Time Warp;
- Play Alexstrasza on your opponent and hit them for 16.
This should be enough against most opponents. Warriors and Druids could be a problem but Warriors have Brawl so 4 giants would be easily cleared and Druids can't clear 2 of them anyway.
As for the early game, Arcanologist is basically a 2 mana 2/3 draw Ice Block which is crazy powerful and consistent. There are enough Quest activators and you can pick a thrid Molten Reflection if need be as another win condition. The rest are either draw engines or delay tools.
I am excited to test it out!
Edit: With the bonus of discovering JUG spells, the likelihood of getting a Molten Reflection might be high enough that including 2 of them is overkill. We'll have to see but it's good to keep that in mind.
Edit2: There is the consideration of running another combo with Time Warp. It consists in:
- Playing 2 Sorcerer's Apprentice;
- Playing 2 Molten Reflection;
- Playing Time Warp;
- Playing Archmage Antonidas;
- Casting a spell and chaining Fireball.
This combo is arguably stronger than the giant one since it can bypass Taunt minions and deal an infinite amount of damage. However, it requires a lot of cards and a substantial set up. I don't think it is consistent enough to see reliable play. We shall see. If Taunt decks are in the meta, some adjustements will have to be made.
Changelog: +1 Arcane Giant/ -1 Molten Giant for more consistency. +1 Polymorph/ -1 Molten Reflection for more control. +1 Acolyte of Pain / -1 Mana Bind. +2 Kabal Courier +1 Loot Hoarder / -1 Acolyte of Pain -2 Shimmering Tempest
Addendum: Well, I didn't expect my theorycrafting deck to get that much success, thank you all for liking. I didn't ask for this, but this was merely a draft and now that the expansion is out, I can see how unrefined this list is and that the Mage Quest might not be the most viable Quest of all. Being busy I haven't even had a chance to test it out. That said, there are plenty of other lists in Hearthpwn that must be better and I encourage everyone to check them out.
I don't have any footage of the deck in action, but a really cool guy named kiwiinbacon made a video about it. You should take a look at it!
This deck is absolutely SUPERB if you want to have fun taking a very long time to lose.
pretty darn good :D
I have won 14 games in a row with this deck, it is disgustingly good. Anyone on this thread complaining about you not winning are simply bad at playing this deck. I have won against pirate warrior, zoolock, quest hunter, and other c'thun decks. This deck also wins against itself, you can tech in eater of secrets if you really want to have a 100% winrate against a mirror.
Rank 15?
I suggest to turn this into something more similar to Freeze mage, with 2x Fireballs and Pyroblast, having Alexstrasza as your main win condition will make you lose every time she's at the bottom of your deck. Drop Loot Hoarder, Polymorph and a Kabal Courier, your winrate will improve quite a lot, even vs warriors.
I have had her on bottom twice and won both, take extra turn with one card left......

then you were against a slow deck, faster decks will wreck you before you reach the last 10 cards in your deck, having more than a finisher is a good idea. I definitely lost a couple of games because I was short of 3-6 damage before adding fireballs, those decks have close to no heal, half of the times it's quicker to gun them down then waiting for Alexstrasza if she's in the bottom 5 cards of your deck
Alexa is not the only win condition, you got many rng spells and 2 arcane giants + one molten + time warp is 24 dmg!
So how do you win if the enemy plays a taunt minion? It seems like running Antonidas is the way out of dealing with taunt minions. Is there an upside to running the Alex x2 Arcane Giant combo instead?
More consistency with draws, you need fewer pieces to make it work. The major downside is taunts, but you can work around it most of the time.
any replacement for Babbling Book? since i dont have the expansion.. thanks!
So far this deck has been complete crap.
Neat idea, but I haven't had any luck with getting the combo off. I don't have Open the Waygate so I subbed in Patches the Pirate
Maybe that's why you can't do the combo, is because you're missing open the waygate? :o
This deck was godlike on day 1 of release. Now i can't seem to win at all. :/
today is day one.... you living mutiple days a day?
But I needed to patch up the deck.
;)
I live in NA, it came out yesterday for us. :3
it came out yesterday for US.... i like what you did there.
Sorry, didn't know NA was master race
Compared to some other quest cards, I feel the Mage one is definitely slower. I can survive with the freeze spells and the dup'ing a giant, but there just isn't enough non-deck spell draw for the Mage quest card. This may just be an issue with the mage quest card rather than this deck specifically. The hunter quest card just runs all over!
Any way to speed up non-deck spell draw?
