This is an attempt at creating a Mage deck with the new quest Open the Waygate. The deck is build similarly to Freeze Mage but with a similar win condition as the old Echo Mage deck which was a very popular deck before the rotation.
I feel like running 4 giants is too risky but that's where Molten Reflection comes into play. It gives you more flexibility and more consistency by copying the one version of Giant you can play. You don't need 4 giants with Alexstrasza. The combo is as follows:
- Play 1 giant (Molten Giant or Arcane Giant) or both depending on what activator you have;
- Copy it with Molten Reflection;
- Play your Time Warp;
- Play Alexstrasza on your opponent and hit them for 16.
This should be enough against most opponents. Warriors and Druids could be a problem but Warriors have Brawl so 4 giants would be easily cleared and Druids can't clear 2 of them anyway.
As for the early game, Arcanologist is basically a 2 mana 2/3 draw Ice Block which is crazy powerful and consistent. There are enough Quest activators and you can pick a thrid Molten Reflection if need be as another win condition. The rest are either draw engines or delay tools.
I am excited to test it out!
Edit: With the bonus of discovering JUG spells, the likelihood of getting a Molten Reflection might be high enough that including 2 of them is overkill. We'll have to see but it's good to keep that in mind.
Edit2: There is the consideration of running another combo with Time Warp. It consists in:
- Playing 2 Sorcerer's Apprentice;
- Playing 2 Molten Reflection;
- Playing Time Warp;
- Playing Archmage Antonidas;
- Casting a spell and chaining Fireball.
This combo is arguably stronger than the giant one since it can bypass Taunt minions and deal an infinite amount of damage. However, it requires a lot of cards and a substantial set up. I don't think it is consistent enough to see reliable play. We shall see. If Taunt decks are in the meta, some adjustements will have to be made.
Changelog: +1 Arcane Giant/ -1 Molten Giant for more consistency. +1 Polymorph/ -1 Molten Reflection for more control. +1 Acolyte of Pain / -1 Mana Bind. +2 Kabal Courier +1 Loot Hoarder / -1 Acolyte of Pain -2 Shimmering Tempest
Addendum: Well, I didn't expect my theorycrafting deck to get that much success, thank you all for liking. I didn't ask for this, but this was merely a draft and now that the expansion is out, I can see how unrefined this list is and that the Mage Quest might not be the most viable Quest of all. Being busy I haven't even had a chance to test it out. That said, there are plenty of other lists in Hearthpwn that must be better and I encourage everyone to check them out.
I don't have any footage of the deck in action, but a really cool guy named kiwiinbacon made a video about it. You should take a look at it!
Definitely fun deck, still too early to see how it will be use in ladder. Always had problem with rogue quest though.
I'm destroying other Quest decks! Absolutely fun to play and exhilarating to win with! I did make an edit to the deck though. I removed the Loot Hoarder since it felt like a filler card and added a Mana Bind in its place. Mana Bind is a surprisingly fun secret to use and Arcanologist brings it out for play for turn 3 if Ice Block didn't come out. It lowers the time you need to stall waiting for Time Warp.
The only trouble I ran into was the Rogue Quest deck. Some crafty players use Elemental cards to complete the quest by turn 4 and then absolutely run you over if you don't have Frost Nova and Doomsayer in hand.
Man, this is a super fun deck. My favorite so far. Pirate Warrior still killing me turn 5-6 tho
You need to friend request the Pirate Warrior after the game and give him a stern talking too.
I have to say, that I love this deck! Even tho it loses to aggro hunters (with bad draw you cant even wish for late game) its one of the most funniest decks to play after Ungoro release!
lawl more downvotes plz scumbagz
JESUS! only played one game but it was crazy. Turn 1 ...quest and coin without mulligan. (vsing a shammy) I was going to run through the whole freeze game and bounce bull**** i had to deal with but instead ill just tell you i got 6-8 ice blocks i lost count. was stuck on 1 hp for too many turns and got saved by alexstraza top deck. game lasted until i went through my whole deck and it wasnt until the perfect sheep potion on his big arse taunt that came out that i was able to get some footing and push out 4 arcane giants. 2 were cloned obviously only have 2 in deck.
played quite a few games with this its a very strong deck. I would recommend switching out one doomsayer for a pyros if possible. the second doomsayer isnt needed and the pyros allows alot of the weird curve points to be smoothed out.
Quest reward is completely broken :O
Now although this deck may seem inconsistent and can get rushed down if you're unlucky it's still an EXTREMELY fun deck to play with! I have played 10 games so far with this deck and have went 6-4. Mainly faced Shamans / Mages but I still did decently. The times I couldn't win was I first messed up my combo horrifically or couldn't draw into my combo quick enough.
It should be noted that you will want to get your ice block ASAP and then follow up with getting Arcane Giant and spamming spells like crazy. Nothing is more satisfying though than pulling off the combo and watching your opponents life get double tapped by two arcane giants and then proceed to explode! Very fun and versatile deck, just playing on a timer and can get unlucky draws at times but still doesn't break the fun.
For those having difficulty with taunts I would definitely exchange some cards out to deal with those because they're the one true way you can not do your OTK combo. Anyways, best of luck all!
Enjoy playing this but get caught without any minions quite often waiting on them to draw!
Consistent and very good I dropped the only molten reflection I usually get it from all the randomization
Yogg? There isnt that many bad spells any more plenty of buffs
Seems to lose heavily to warrior/hunter. Seems to beat quest shaman. Ditto is just like freeze mage ditto.
Super fun and interactive.
Thoughts on replacing one Cabalist's Tome with the new Elise the Trailblazer? I feel like she's such a solid 5 drop and she adds at least 1 to the spell count, possibly more depending on luck.
It seems like an instant loss against quest warriors--which I've faced three of so far.
Boy. Did take long for Blizzard to ruin the game again. Game after game is this bs OTK deck.
Just won with 6 Arcane Giants on board and my poor opponent couldn't do anything to stop my attacks. xD
First try, too much card draw. Second, too little. Third time the charm hopefully.
Adding another OTK control deck... how fun.
