Thijs posted on Facebook saying that this is his favourite deck, along with some stats for it.
Here's a video of Thijs using the deck that he posted to his YouTube channel:
Not really. Medivh, the Guardian is your best option as he offers similar value, but nothing replaces her fully.
i don't know you guys, but i've lost all my matches with reno mage decks .
Just switched Cabalist tome to archmage but still, wasted all my dust to that deck but stucked at rank15-14 lol. idk i am not playing bad i think.
you are. My version of reno mage, 34-16 right now with it on ladder.
I'm playing a Manic-less version of this deck.
Today got an extra legendary from a watch a friend quest pack, so I can craft Manic Soulcaster. Should I do it?
The card looks extremely valuable: allows to reuse a powerful card, gets you 1 extra turn away from fatigue (seems to be common in Reno matchups), or even 2 when paired with Brann (but with some potential trouble added due to a duplicate), and keeps the body on board opposite to the Youthful Brewmaster budget alternative...
But I also want to start from next week to gather resources for next expansion: gold and a little dust from brawl/quest packs too.
So should I craft it, or should I stockpile that dust?
If you're really invested in Reno Mage, do it. The second Reno Jackson or Kazakus can be a game changer. However, keep in mind that Reno Jackson is rotating out soon and this deck archetype might disappear entirely when that happens, so Manic Soulcaster will be a dead card.
EDIT: Yes, a new card could potentially make Manic Soulcaster great again, but I don't like to offer advice based on things I don't know so I just account for the now.
Crafted it.
And if Mage doesn't fall into trash tier next expansion/rotation, this card may find another place to be. Having two copies of a game changer legendary, or other copy of other key card, is always a good possibility. Doesn't have the "singleton" requiriment, so playable in any deck.
The question is: will the next meta give a chance to this card?
Antonidas burn.
its a control deck, watch other pro's play the list. if you don't understand why and what this deck does, you really need to watch other pros play.
I made the following changes..,
minus:
Forbidden Flame - flexible card, but I currently do not have it
Kabal Courier - no room for it
Mind Control Tech - hardly ever works in current meta
Emperor Thaurissan - no combo in this deck, so what's the use besides a soft taunt? Slow in current meta.
Archmage Antonidas - too few spells in this deck to make this work as a finisher. Add Cabalist's Tome at least.
plus:
Sir Finley Mrrgglton - really nice against aggro, a body + possible priest/warr hero power
Frost Nova - board clear with Doomsayer or stall a turn
Second-Rate Bruiser - excellent anti-aggro card, also nice against priest
Sylvanas Windrunner - works better against aggro then emperor (they trade into it or you get a minion). Also nice against jade druid.
Medivh, the Guardian - I get much more value from him then archmage in this deck
I feel like forbidden flame is worth crafting for this deck. That card is extremely useful for clearing certain minions in probably 75% of the matches for me, especially in the early game.
I do feel like Archmage is very rarely utilized due to the low number of spells and high cost of them. I think emperor has helped me more than hurt, so I might leave him.
I'll try removing archmage, MC tech, and kabal. Then adding Medivh, second-rate bruiser, and frost nova. We'll see how it goes!
Yeh I'm switching emperor back in. Saving dust for forbidden flame.
Succes depends on meta though. Yesterday I went from 18 to 12 in a few hours. Now back to 14, met 4 jade druid, 2 midrange jade shamans, 3 miracle rogues and a renopriest. I don't understand Thijs winrates against those classes.
I'm kind of midway between both. Don't have any card return and don't own Manic Soulcaster, thinking about Youthful Brewmaster: you lose a body on table, but secure the availability to replay him ASAP.
The thing about Archmage Antonidas is: discount him and spells with Emperor Thaurissan, you need to use cheap spells wisely, the ideal scenario is to save them to combo. If you're facing an aggro opponent, forget about the Antonidas value and deny him as much damage as possible until he runs out of steam. Him and Alexstrasza get their value vs other Reno decks, where you soon go to fatigue and those extra Fireballs may give you the advantage.
The emperor is there to help create more fireballs with antonidas, so thats the purpose of it. But if you're gonna cut archmage you might as well cut emperor too.
Thijs had Medivh in his first list. mind control tech always works in the meta, considering how aggressive the meta is. sir finley is a joke, let be honest, there are a lot better card than finley. cabal courier helps overall in general and curves out nicely. frost nova is in steelo's list so thats debatable. sylvanas is okay i guess. second rate bruiser was also in some highlander mage decks, so thats also debatable. honestly medivh is as slow as archmage, but archmage gives you so much value vs renolock and the mirror, also every control list runs ooze so not sure how you'd get more value than archmage can in the control matchups.......
Watched Thijs on stream last night. He changed the deck, more cycle cards and added Burgly Bully to fuel Archmage Antonidas.
Are there any good guides about Reno mage? I've been trying this out at rank 20 and not having much luck (2:8 w:l so far).
The decklist is still being toyed with and isn't set in stone yet, so there's no actual guides for it yet. The best you could do is go to Thijs' Twitch channel and watch the VOD of him playing it. He often explains moves as he's making them and it's the closest thing you'll get to a guide.
Best of luck!
tempo storm has an ok mulligan guide for reno mage. https://tempostorm.com/hearthstone/decks/reno-mage-standard-meta-snapshot-jan-2-2017 . Mulligans are pretty important because they're not as obvious as with minion based decks
