"THEY ARE ALL GONNA LAUGH AT YOU FOR PLAYING SHIPS CANNON" my friends said.
It was true. Back in the early portion of 2016 no one was running pirates. I playtested multiple versions of the deck. Seeing great potential i continued to try different techniques to make it work as the pure burst was insane, coupled with a 3/3 taunter for free and massive weapon upgrades. I ran ships cannon back then and they laughed. Till it hit them in the face for 10 dmg total, then panic set in as their life total dwindled. I used to get comments all the time and still have friends on my list who said "I've never seen that used competitively" lol There were times i think i was rank 1 or 2 and running a Parrot in the deck.
UPDATED 1/14/17
After play testing this deck for a month, i've removed the Hobart Grapplehammer and replaced it with an acidic swamp ooze. I've known for months that if pirate warrior ever took off, there would be a need for a weapon removal in the deck. After trial, i decided to remove hobart and not brann for the acidic ooze. This is due to Brann coupling with the cultists and raiders and not just becoming a single weapon buff.
I KNOW ITS EXPENSIVE TO MAKE!!! HOWEVER:
if you don't have the cards to use all the legendaries, i have some replacement options for you and the deck still functions beautifully, JUST SUB WITH THESE CARDS:
- 1x Southsea Captain
- 1x Kor'Kron Elite
- 1x Mortal Strike
- 1x Heroic Strike
- 1x Battle Rage (id swap this directly for Genzo if you don't have him)
- 1x Eater of Secrets (Due to number of secret paladin and ice block mage decks in ladder)
- 1x Arcanite Reaper
UPDATED FOR GADGET RELEASE:
Ok after play testing all the additions that I listed below originally at launch of Gadget, I've concluded a few things. First, the Small Time Buccaneers and Hobart play amazingly well in the deck. Game 1 of the launch i combo'ed brann into hobart and dropped a 5/2 axe. Genzo proved to be the biggest surprise for me. As i assumed would be the case. This deck maintains massive board presence very early in the game, with the determining factor of win coming from steam of aggression. Genzo although situational won me very many games based off the fact that at this point the opponent was scrambling to defend leaving very little minions out to trade for Genzo and causing them to either control through spells in hand and valuable mana or allow me to refill, the majority of my hand, if not the whole thing. He is amazing and i'll keep. I am working on the remaining dust to craft patches yet so i'll let you know his value when i do. I did playtest Malkorok in here but his value was absolutely not what i had expected. 4/6 times i could have used a decent weapon the weapon was horrible and mostly he sat in my hand as a dead card while my other minions and weapons did the work. This deck is highly aggressive and if i'm not swinging for the win turn 7 or have them close then most likely a loss is in the future. I'd much rather use a Mortal Strike over him.
Added in 2 Small Time Buccaneers, Patches the Pirate, Hobart Grapplehammer (I have a feeling this will be huge for the deck, especially if able to pair with Brann), and 2 which i want to play test and see how they perform. Genzo, the Shark (card draw!). We will see how this goes now after launch. I replaced the previous cards in deck of Sir Finley, 1x Southsea Captain, 1 Captain Greenskin, and 1 Mortal Strike. Brass Knuckles to me seemed way to slow and didn't want to offset deck tempo of the deck. I considered Grimestreet Pawnbroker however opted to exclude in because it seemed too situational. I will playtest later as well.
I've been playing Pirates with Mace Warrior for months. I have a huge friends list from people saying "WOW, I can't believe you beat me with pirates!"
I've spent months play testing this deck. Every month i've beaten legends and have made legend with this deck.
Wanna see something cool. Make this deck. Ever seen a 21/4 Bloodsail Raider dropped on a legend player? I have pictures to prove it. The weapons get huge. The damage is real. Best of all they are flipping pirates and its fun! Its becoming popular now which is depressing for me. But great for you since i'm posting the deckles. I actually have a Youtube video called "That moment when you realize someone stole your deck" when i was streaming and ran into someone starting to catch on to my madness!
There are like 9 (now 10 as of 12/1/16)ways to get a weapon of some sort, you need it. Mulligan for it, the deck is based on it. Don't be afraid to hold onto that corsair for a turn even though you could play him for free since you just dropped a 4 power weapon. This is smart especially to guarantee upgrades for the cultists. Do the math with weapons. An Arcane Destroyer upgraded twice is a 7/3. Thats 21 damage in 3 turns. Know these values when determining whether its worth it to blow your weapon.
BRANN BRANN BRANN!!!! This guy is the combo nuts. Combine with bloodsail raiders to make huge (i've dropped a 20/3 that got a +1/+1 boost from a captain and was a 21/4 for 2 mana. Combo him with cultists and greenskin for double upgrades!!!! Also some things you may not have thought of......combo him with leeroy to drop 4 drakes on them. Especially when you are death rattling a death bite and then casting leeroy to kill them all meanwhile having a Frothing Berserker out who gets HUGE!!! I'll let you figure out the rest. I promise if you play this you'll hit legend in enough time. yesterday alone 10/19/16 i went from 15-rank 3 and went 25-10 i believe was the record!! Good luck. Hit me up in game on Serpa and let me know what you think.
Amazing write up. Very detailed. Awesome to see someone playing pirate warrior before it was cool.
This deck has gotten me a goldepic reward for a few months now. It's my go to at crunch time. Thank you! Great write up. And great other decks!! Keep up the good work! I see you were playing Pirate warrior before Gadget was web released. You are way ahead of the curve on all your decks!
upvoted, i'll upvote all the expensive aggro decks , one day the front page will have super expensive 9k dust aggro decks and 2kish dust controlish jade decks and new players will play more control or Jade because those decks are cheaper which will lead to the ladder having less aggro....
it's my Master Plan!!!!!!!
Also, the write-up is pretty entertaining and concise you deserve the upvote.
Good and fun deck! what i've been looking for all along
No problem. I appreciate the feedback. I absolutely loved playing it. Let me know what you think after playing with it.
I put in a malkorok since I didn't have another southsea deckhand and it's been working quite well. I've only lost one game (priest) so far. I also subbed in a Fool's bane for when my opponents outnumber my minions on board. You did a great job with this deck. I call it the "jack sparrow" deck! Thanks again
Also: do you find that you run out of cards pretty quickly? I'm wondering if you can get a little card draw in here without sacrificing too much momentum
Wow absolutely wonderful calls on those cards. I just updated the deck list and then checked the comments. I find it mind blowing that you decided to add Malkorok as well!! I just was paging through and thought omg lemme try him for late game. Also i was thinking the same thing about the deck losing steam. I've play tested multiple ways to draw cards in here, especially with battle rage and the deaths bite etc. I just updated for Gadget and i'm going to be play testing Genzo, the card shark in here. I think he could prove to help out with that area. especially because by turn 5 swing with him most times i'm out of cards if not at 1 card in hand. Amazing calls on those though. After seeing this post I feel i made the right swap outs for the deck. As far as card draw without momentum sacrifice. The most i've been able to get in was 1 card without seeing a massive effect on it.
I think Hobart is going to prove to be a huge add in for this expansion, also patches and the small time buccaneers. 1 cast heaven and with 1/3 of the deck producing a weapon they are almost always going to be 3/2's. i'll keep you posted on how it plays!
Thanks for taking the time to write this up. Looks super fun. I'll definitely give it a try
