   1. intro

Hey everyone! I'm Acidz and I'm a Professional player for Sector One. I came up with a really solid patron list that catches most people by surprise. Together with Blauwedruif we have refined the list and tested it both to the point we are almost sure it’s optimal. (Any changes feel free to drop a comment).

Blauwedruif is a multiple legend player from the Netherlands and he is mainly going to write this guide. He used the deck to climb from rank 4 to legend, but we have a video from us 2 together getting legend from rank 3 on my stream. (In the Video section).

So why is this deck a "Surprise Patron" deck?

Well the main body of this deck is similar to the well-known Worgen OTK warrior. In this deck there is no combo (faceless, worgen, charge and rampage) and the differences are the Patrons, Grommash, Whirlwinds and Yogg Saron. While playing, your opponent will recognise your deck as an OTK warrior and will play differently than they would play if they knew it was patron. The result of this is that they waste a lot of removal cards to get rid of boards that are big for an OTK warrior. But even with the knowledge of the patrons it’s extremely hard to keep up with a deck that draws this much and has the lord and saviour when needed!

One really good example of this can be seen on this twitch broadcast from Neirea: Neirea vs Me https://www.twitch.tv/neirea/v/82433173# It starts at 01:14:20; you see him play his turn before the "Surprise". He completely overloaded himself and played on of his biggest removal spells. This gave me the perfect opportunity to unleash my patrons. If he would have known I played a patron list instead of OTK he probably would have changed his line of play in that turn. Also, his reaction is priceless.

   4. Strategy

The strategy with this deck is straightforward. You just draw as much as possible early game while also clearing the board, much like OTK warrior. In mid-game we try to overwhelm (and surprise) the opponent with a patron board. Late game we try and refill the board with maybe a second wave or multiplying the patrons already in play. We are gonna provide you with a couple of simple tips to get you started with the deck!

Tip 1: Try holding on to the Commanding Shout till you get the wildpyro to make a board clear, unless if it gets you really good trades or it duplicates some of your patrons.

Tip 2: Executes are usually reserved for big threats, but using them to get a better board state to go for a set of patrons on the following turn is no mistake.

Tip 3: If you have the choice to play Emperor Thaurissan or patrons, it is recommended to look at your hand and see what benefits you the most, because being able to fit in an extra execute or battle rage in the patron turn might be crucial.

Tip 4: Against aggro try to get the fullest out of the armorsmith, this means playing it with a lot of minions and whirlwinds or very early in the game to stall; after turn 3 it loses its value to fight on the board.

   5. Stats and Matchups

Good matchups:

As you can see in the stats from Blauwedruif, Token druid and Zoo Warlock are the best matchups. Also against other popular ladder decks it performs pretty good, it has a 75% win rate against Midrange Hunter, with a small game poule though, but it’s still 75%. You are also favoured against the most played deck on ladder now, Dragon Warrior.

Bad matchups:

Unfortunately Aggro Shaman is still out there, and that is one of the harder matchups, because they just dont give you the time to surprise them with your patrons. A teched in Armorsmith and a good curve can help you to survive against this deck untill you are able to develop patrons and seal the game. The control matchups aren’t that great either; Warrior who has Brawl, Priest who has Excavated Evil, and Warlock who has Hellfire. Luckily those decks aren’t played that much, and on top of that, it’s possible to cycle really fast into your patrons and overwhelm your opponent while he can’t react to it. So the matchup isn’t unwinable, it’s just a tough one.

Conclusion:

So the win rates are almost the same as the win rates from OTK Worgen Warrior, it has the same good matchups (except this deck struggles against renolock) and the same bad matchups, but Surprise Patron seems to perform much better against Midrange Hunter and Dragon Warrior wich is more common right now!
