DECK LIST UPDATED 10/3/2016
Hello! My name is Lyme, I'm a streamer, deck builder & dolphin trainer. I'm back with my "Standard Mode" rendition of my popular OTK priest! With a couple key cards from the new expansion, this deck was given a boost in power in exchange for some defensive capability. So let's begin....
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
With the addition of Embrace the Shadow, this deck is now capable of 60+ damage 1 turn combos. Primarily, your focus each turn should be on cycling as much as possible, and secondly on keeping the board clean. Tracking your current damage throughout the game is a must (keep in mind that Prophet Velen also essentially doubles with any spell damage added). This is ideal for players that love a difficult to master yet powerful and viable combo deck.
STRATEGY
- Early game: Draw cards, and set up for big board clears if necessary. Using your cards to cycle 2 / 3 cards per turn means you are playing the deck correctly EG: Wild Pyromancer into (spell) into Circle of Healing with a cleric on the board, or Wild Pyromancer w/any spell and Acolyte of Pain up.
- Mid / End Game: If you can get at least three of the key cards in your hand (Prophet Velen,Mind Blast, Flash Heal, Smite, Auchenai Soulpriest, Embrace the Shadow) it's time to Emperor Thaurissan.
- The exception to this rule is Control Warriors, the game will be slower, so saving Emperor Thaurissan until you have Double Flash, Double Mind Blast, Thalnos, Embrace & possibly a smite in hand is ideal. The most damage I've done with this combo in one turn for lethal was ~66, and my opponent almost surely uninstalled after.
If you are facing an aggro deck, saving cards for an OTK is not usually the way to win, but rather using everything you have to clear the board and stay alive. Part of the reason this deck is great is the versatility, as you can use your healing spells as damage or to bring you back to full OR clear the board. Be aware of what you are against and if you'll need to save spells to survive. An example would be using mind blast to proc a pyromancer aoe, or a flash heal to heal yourself with Velen up.
MATCHUPS & MULLIGANS
-
WARRIOR - Acolyte of Pain, Loot Hoarder, Gnomish Inventor, Harrison Jones, Northshire Cleric; This has always been the most difficult matchup. With the addition of Embrace the Shadow, you should actually be able to combo the warrior down from 60+HP. Draw as much as possible, and SAVE Emperor Thaurissan until you have almost all possible damage spells. It helps greatly to get Bloodmage Thalnos in your emperor turn, as he can add ~10 damage to your combo.
-
MAGE - Keep any draw, Wild Pyromancer, Smite, Power Word: Shield; If it's freeze mage, it's a pretty easy matchup, just save your heals for yourself with a velen combo. Against tempo, just make sure to clear efficiently, as they typically will try to bait you into using aoe on one minion. Against tempo you're perfectly fine to use yourFlash Heal to heal yourself or combo pyromancer.
-
Paladin - Keep any draw, Wild Pyromancer, Smite, Power Word: Shield ; Paladins seem to be pretty easy to handle. Against nzoth, go ahead and draw for about 25 damage before you Emperor Thaurissan. Against aggro, pulling pyromancer and using your spells aggressively is the way to win.
-
Shaman - Keep any draw, Wild Pyromancer, Smite, Power Word: Shield Keep Circle of Healing if you have Embrace the Shadow or Auchenai Soulpriest in your hand; Not too difficult, Harrison is a key card here if you can read they are running a Doomhammer list. Using circle of healing in conjunction with wild pyromancer and northshire cleric to draw 3-5 cards instead of clear the board is completely ok in this matchup. The more you draw, the better chance you have of beating their tempo.
-
Rogue: Keep Harrison Jones, Loot Hoarder, Gnomish Inventor, Bloodmage Thalnos, Shadow Word: Death; You are simply trying to draw your combo pieces before he can unload. Saving pyro AOE or circle of healing AOE for their Goblin can be wise if it's turn 5 or 6, unless you can use them to draw 2-3 cards which is always preferred.
-
Priest: Keep all cards with draw mechanics; This is a very easy matchup typically. Priests are slow enough to allow you to amass a huge combo into your thaurissan. Just stay alive and give them a nice surprise. You can and SHOULD be greedy with your spells and clears in this matchup, unless they are pressuring you extremely hard.
-
Hunter - Keep any draw, Wild Pyromancer, Smite, Power Word: Shield Harrison Jones ; Can be difficult if it's midrange. Try and draw as quickly as possible and saving aoe at the expense of taking damage is important, as they have many high value cards later on that need to be dealt with. You're likely to need to heal yourself with spells here, which is fine because you've got more than enough damage to take them down without your flash heals.
-
Druid - Keep any draw, Wild Pyromancer, Smite, Power Word: Shield Shadow Word: Death; With the Druid nerfs, this matchup became significantly easier. The game should go long enough to draw a pretty large combo, thaurissan is OK even with one mind blast here, as most druid decks will lack any healing and you'll want to keep tempo up.

I'm a beginner with OTK Priest and I've only played it to Rank 3 so far, but it seems to work fairly well in the current meta. I've been wondering if you could share your experiences with MSG and update your guide (if you're still playing). That would be very cool.
well the 1st opponent added me as a friend after and started a rant..... seems like hs has one player less. mission accomplished
this deck cant win. I wish it could. the combos are way to hard to pull off. I am often getting down to 4 or 5 cards left in the deck and invariably one of them is emperor or velen. 1-9 so far. and I went from rank 17-8 on mainly dragon and res preist.
notice, that was pre-gadgetzan control meta ))))
what a pile
Are you still having success with this list?
Yeah I did actually have one that I updated after the newest xpac, I'll post it if you're interested. It's definitely a very solid deck if you plan on playing wild.
I too would love to see it!
I love this deck to death because no one really expects what kind of deck it is. At first it seems like a regular control priest, then blam shit tons of damage. Only problem I can find is a lack of board clears. There are many times I find myself without an activator for circle of healing to clear the board, probably because of bad rng and everything being at the bottom of the deck. So I end up getting swarmed and have no way of coming back especially against stickier and bigger minions. Are there any things you would tech out vs. all of these aggro decks ie: pirate warrior, murloc pallys, secret pallys, face hunter, zoo etc. Or should I just hope for the best and pray that I get the cards I need to clear board? Otherwise the deck has a ton of draw and burst capabilities. Only big drawback is when you don't draw your clears when you need it and velen and thaurisan happen to be at the bottom of your deck. Otherwise last season I was able to get from rank 25 to rank 5 with only this deck. I would have pushed for more, but ended up getting really sick towards the end of the month. Also what do you think of cards like darkshire alchemist, justicar trueheart, or alexstraza or even adding another embrace the shadow.
Priests generally have to play from behind, because like you mentioned, their ability to clear the board is pretty limited. Against aggro decks, I'd encourage you to simply play to survive. The toolkit is pretty versatile, which means you can focus on healing yourself rather than saving for damage. If you can put them down to 24 ish HP, you have a very high chance of killing them with only smites / mind blasts if you need to.
If you played to rank 5, you probably know how great pyromancer synergy is with almost any card, it's a huge draw / board clear booster. You should hit about a 70% win ratio against zoo / any form of paladin. Pirate warrior and hunter can be a bit more difficult for sure, and you will usually have to play a more defensive game while sneaking in minion damage if you can. Holding your cards an extra turn for a bigger board clear, even at the expense of taking 10 more damage is sometimes necessary (like with most priest decks)
As far as replacements go, you could definitely try some. Alex was good in the old verision, but we had less damage potential and more defense back then. I never find time for justicar, as you should be using most of your mana each turn from other cards. A second embrace is reasonable. I put the two soulpriests in with one because you'll want the option of damage or clear. Drawing a dead card can be devastating with an OTK deck though, which is why I made it so draw heavy. A second nova felt clunky, but the heal + dmg synergy is pretty nice.
If anything, I typically play strictly to draw more cards which seemed to give the highest win %. For example, If I have the option to circle + soulpriest clear a board, OR pyro / cleric / PWS / circle to draw 6+ cards (using his minions), I'd choose to draw. Not only are you doing some damage, but he has to clear your board, and you have a huge stock of cards to either set up lethal, heal yourself, or clear if necessary. If you have a huge card advantage against aggro decks, you are usually going to win. I think that is where most people struggle with this, or all OTK decks really. You prioritize a much different game plan and have to take what might seem like a weird line of play. This deck is super difficult to play perfectly, a bit harder than even OTK or Patron was in terms of available decisions each turn, you pushed it pretty far though.
Thanks for the advice, yeah decision making with this deck can be pretty hard at times and its definitely something I need to work on. Harrison Jones seems to be in your match-ups and mulligans, what would you suggest replacing in the deck list to fit him back in or is he too clunky at the moment (reason being you always see fiery war axes with or without upgrade, truesilver sword, eagle horn bow, spirit claws), but in any other match-up he ends up a dead card.
This deck is fun but its essentially a worse Freeze Mage no? It's harder to survive, and you can't really win unless you draw both Emperor and Prophet, while in freeze mage I often win with only burn and no Alex or Emperor. Plus you don't have Arcane Intellect to cycle faster.
No, in fact in many situations its much better than freeze mage. Look at the cards, it's entirely possible to kill your opponent without reduction or even velen. There is far more cycle than in freeze mage, especially if you use your cleric, circles, and pyros together.
Of course Freeze Mage is better, why else is it more popular on ladder.
This deck fucking sucks........15 games 15 losses what the fuck >.<
Found a better version that actual gets wins.ya like i said this duck sucks.
how do we do 66 damage with this deck? with all the combo pieces discounted, i calculated 60 damage max.
Prophet (6) + Embrace (1) + Bloodmage (1) + 2x Mind Blast (2) [24] + 2x Flash Heal (0) [24] + 2x Holy Smite (0) [12] = 10 Mana, 60 damage.
please correct me if i'm wrong, cheers!
For example, if your dragons are on the board
