Update: Highest rank I achieved so far on Asia server with this deck (6/24/16)
Update 2: Also hit top 100 on EU server (6/25/16)
Hi everyone! This season I decided to try a F2P (free-to-play) challenge on Asia server since I don't have a very large card collection there. The rules were to use only basic/common cards (no rares/epics/legendaries allowed) and no adventure cards since these are typically very expensive for new players to unlock (700 gold per wing). The total cost is only 800 if you have to craft every single card but most likely new players will have opened a significant number of the cards through packs. Note that some of the deck costs on Hearthpwn are very misleading because they do not factor in adventure cards!! This is truly a F2P deck that can hit legend.
Proof of legend:
The strategy behind the deck as the name suggests is to OTK or one-turn-kill your opponent with Raging Worgen + Charge and activators like Cruel Taskmaster and/or Inner Rage. You generally do 16-20 damage on turn 6-8 to finish off the game. It has 2 copies of all combo pieces to help with consistency and plenty of card draw mechanics. It also has some anti-aggro cards like Mad Bomber and Ravaging Ghoul to clear the board and Bloodhoof Brave for taunt. Check out some of my instructional videos on this deck and other decks on my Twitch/Youtube channels!
Some example game play on the road to legend:
Basic Strategy/Mulligan
The mulligan is generally the same against all classes. You want Fiery War Axe all the time and your early drops like Mad Bomber, Loot Hoarder, Acolyte of Pain. Never keep combo pieces like Inner Rage, Raging Worgen, and Charge. Against slower control decks you can keep Gnomish Inventor for cycle if you already have the early game cards. Against aggro decks you'll want to keep Ravaging Ghoul for the board clear. Try to maintain board control early on with your weapon and early drops to allow you to fit in the face damage to put your opponent into combo range. Only start to go face if you have no way to come back on board or have the cards in hand to enable you to race for lethal. Kor'kron Elite is useful for punching in the needed damage or trading off minions like Frothing Berserker and Imp Gang Boss before they get out of hand. Bloodhoof Brave also allows you to stall out an extra turn to set up lethal. The key to playing this deck is always to know how much damage you have in your hand and when to start setting up lethal for next turn. Try to save Execute for getting through the taunts or removing big threats. Finally, one of your biggest swing cards is Battle Rage so always try to get good value from it to draw your combo. Happy OTKing my F2P friends! =)
Update (6/27/16):
Thank you all for the upvotes and feedback! Really happy to see a lot of new (and old) players benefiting from the cheap deck. Of course, I also see that many people are struggling, which is to be expected. I just want to make perfectly clear that a cheap deck does not mean easy-to-play or even "beginner-friendly." Why do I advertise it as F2P then? Well, it is F2P in the sense that you can pretty much craft the deck within a few hours of a fresh account. That means anybody can have access to it. The success of the player is then not limited to their card collection but by their skill, which is how I think the game should be. It also exposes new players to the depth of the game which may not be as obvious when you play face decks or curve decks like tempo warrior, c'thun druid, midrange hunter, etc. Although these other decks are much easier to play and are less punishing for misplays than combo decks, the sense of reward for playing a more complex deck is just on another level. This is naturally the case with any deck like miracle rogue or freeze mage that runs a lot of card cycle. Having more options and cards means more complex scenarios/decision-making than decks that naturally fall into play-the-topdecked-card-because-I-have-no-card-draw-and-rely-on-luck-to-get-my-curve-all-the-time-and-win-games-and-I-will-now-BM-emote-all-the-time-to-prove-that-I'm-not-a-bot-because-honestly-a-bot-could-play-the-deck-that-I'm-playing.
Okay, hopefully that was enough convincing to encourage newer players to try to learn the deeper aspects of Hearthstone gameplay even if it means some lower win-rates during the learning process. It's important after each of your losses to evaluate what went wrong in that game and if there were any points were you had multiple viable lines of play and made a wrong decision. Don't beat yourself up for losses to lucky players if you played correctly each turn. Learn to change the deck yourself as well! Deck-building is an important skill, and you understand a deck better when you are the one to build/modify it because then you know why each of the cards are in the deck. One of the common questions in this thread is about card substitutions for "upgrading" the deck if you have more cards. Here are some cards that you can think about including:
and the flex card spots are probably
It's up to you how you want to alter the deck to suit your play-style. You can make it very greedy to beat control or very anti-aggro. A middle-of-the-road upgrade that I like is
-1 Loot Hoarder
-2 Mad Bomber
Hope this helps! Good luck and please remember to have fun. It's a game after all!
Update (7/25/16): My newest preferred "upgraded" list:
-2 Mad Bomber
Blood To Ichor is a good anti-aggro card and good way to trigger Acolyte of Pain without giving up combo pieces. I decided against Frothing Berserker as being too slow to set up and not high enough impact without cards like Whirlwind. The focus is card-cycle and pressure to get turn 8 lethal consistently with the 2x combo pieces.
THANK YOU! Someone has realized that this deck is great i'm playing this deck at rank 10 right now and bad players are whining because they cant get past rank 19 with this deck.
Haha, thanks for sharing your experience! I definitely ran even cheaper versions of this F2P deck when I was grinding for the murloc hero and it definitely still works =)
I can't seem to even make it past rank 17, I'm relatively new to the game but I understand the fundamentals and I made it to rank 13 with a 800 dust C'Thun mage last month, but now almost every person I play against has 3 or more legendaries that I can't compete with. My winrate with this deck is around 50% but it fluctuates, do you have any advice?
The main problem is the current meta at the lower ranks. Try using another deck to get past about 15-10, like that C'Thun Mage and then play it. Also, try variants on the deck - especially adding in Rampage, as the Raging Worgen Charge Inner Rage Inner Rage Rampage Rampage/Cruel Taskmaster ultra-combo costs 10 mana exactly and deals 32/30 damage, enough to kill a full health enemy.
It really doesn't matter how many legendaries your opponent has. Legendaries do not counter this deck. The main advice is to think about the games you lose and if you made any misplays. Remember, 1 misplay usually results in a loss with this deck.
Yeah, you're right. It's just demoralizing seeing so many people with great decks that obviously don't belong between rank 15-18. I have a little dust to spare for common/rares, I'll give rampage a try and see how that goes, is there anything else I can try changing in the deck to help me grind through these ranks?
This deck is absolutely fantastic and is a blast both to play and play against - I had a match recently where it was mirror, OTKWorgen vs OTKWorgen, except with different teching. It was one of the best games I've ever had. Also, it seems against Control Warrior the only way I've been able to win is by using two combos consecutively - one turn after the other. My hardest matchup seems to be Control C'Thun Warrior. Any tips for that matchup?
Glad you're enjoying the deck! Against control warrior it's basically about cycling like there's no tomorrow to outpace them. You can tech in rampage to increase maximum damage or add the Emperor+faceless combo if you really face a lot of control warrior.
Thanks for the deck since Im been struggled as f2p to obtain a competitive deck, even this deck is pretty hard to start with since I barely touched combo otk deck like this, still managed to master it (not going to say perfectly tho Im still a pretty new player) and even got my first rank 13 with consistent short winstreks. Prob going for rank 5 this season if possible for golden epic 4Head
No problem and good luck on that rank 5! =)
Haha, yup, turn 6 lethals do happen XD
Hello again Lokshadow, watched your vids to learn how to play this deck more, kept making shifts and testing whole day.
There's a problem with the ranked being swarmed by cthun priests and I just have no chance vs them. Literally every second match was vs a priest and I lost almost all of those. I had no problem beating any other class in any of their variation - maybe except paladins using rallying blade+divine shield or murlocs, but those were always tough to win against.
Here's a usual game vs priest - I put a card, it gets worded and he puts a card - rip board control.
Can't overwhelm, can't clear everything most of the time, hooded acolyte + shield makes it 3/8 and making an 8 attack unit for it to get worded/entombed next turn never pays off.
Tried throwing all face, ignore the board - just brings out a darkmender sooner or later, heals 10 hp, instantly out of OTK range, all for nothing.
Tried turtling, saving up cards for one big OTK - just brings out minions, buffs cthun, I'm dead long before I collect even half of the combo.
The deck is default with a pair of changes, -2 bombers +2 berserkers, -1 acolyte -1 inventor +2 rampages. I know about the magic 4 attack, yet it's hard to keep my self-buffing minions in/out of range. Something else I might be doing wrong or I could change?
Thanks in advance!
I'm at the very bottom right now, rank 20. My day went like this: face hunter shaman warlock - smorc to rank 17, priest priest priest - back to 20. Several times.
I don't consider this deck bad at all, just the priest's words being a really hard counter. Even an aggro druid coining and innervating a 4/6 taunt turn 2 lost to me in the end when he ran out of cards and I got my combo.
I know that the answer 'make another deck' seems obvious here, yet what do I make to beat priest - some sort of control warrior? Or a completely different class? Need some advice!
You can try a brawl if you're encountering too many taunted minions, but if you're running rampages then you should be able to assemble 30 damage even if they are healing "out of range." Maybe you're focused too much on clearing board instead of cycling. The priest can't really apply that much pressure and you should be able to assemble at least 20 damage by turn 8-10. Be careful to get value out of your acolytes/battle rages to make sure you draw into combo. Don't use up combo pieces unnecessarily on clearing low-threat boards.
Thanks for the advice, there is room for improvement. Tried brawl, too situational, doesn't work that good for me. I do have a habit of clearing the board fully when playing vs priest/paladin to avoid them buffing their small minions into killing machines over several turns - that's how I usually don't live up to my combo and have to throw an execute or even both before cthun just to survive. My current full combo for 10 mana is 28 damage, I get all the 2-3 pieces every game and just one inner rage, the other lurking in the last 6-8 cards. Maybe when I grind Thaurissan I can just replace it with a taskmaster and it won't be much of a problem. All the combo pieces I always keep to the last, unless I can finish off my opponent this or next turn. When possible, I try to slam/ghoul my minions and use battle rage. Only thing I sometimes use for clearing big cards is taskmaster/execute. Will keep playing and learning, hopefully things will change!
why cant i find some cards like inner rage? im low lvl
You need to craft it.
Glad it performed well for you! =)
Useless deck in current meta "EU", nothing but handlocks and armor/cthn warriors, been playing for a day had only 1 win because of opponent disconnected.
What rank are you? I've been having success with it at around 10.
