The Concept
Normal zoo deck pros:
1)They have a very early board pressure mana curve
2)They have very sticky minions
3)They use efficient board trading and small minion buffs to trade up on board minions.
Normal zoo deck cons:
1)Can be out-smorced (shamans and hunters can often burn your health bar to zero even without maintaining board control)
2)If board control is lost to a higher curved deck from one or two mass minion removals you can get overwhelmed.
So then my goal became to solve these problems with zoo, at first I thought I could counteract some smorc with an Earthen Ring Farseer or Cult Apothecary or maybe more Defender of Argus or even Sunfury Protector, but it didnt feel to help me much more often against the aggro.
Then I thought about Reno Jackson. At first thought it seems dumb in zoo to have reno because then you are forced to have 1 copy of each card or risk running 2 copies which is never a good idea. But amazingly it works great! Because zoo decks have so many great interchangable cards on the low mana curve, zoo early games will play out virtually the same even without running 2 copies.
I also chose to throw in removal spells such as Mortal Coil, Demonwrath, Hellfire, and Bane of Doom. Often times against decks such as totem shaman they will run the perfect curve and will affirm board control and hold it, these board removal spells, though few, should help if that does happen.
Now we teched the deck to strongly improve against aggro, but where some safety was added, some threat was lost. Yes, now we have more survivability against aggro decks, but without Soulfire, Doomguard, Leeroy Jenkins, or double Power Overwhelming how will we find the damage to kill off our control warriors which will surely win a game stalled too long!
Have no fear for I have heard your concerns and have blessed the deck with cards such as Dreadsteed. The games will run longer since you dont have the aforementioned finishers. So dreadsteed will be a great choice! Silences have basically been cast out of the meta and priest can't hold a toothpick against other decks in the meta so they arent seeing much play and they have the biggest counter Cabal Shadow Priest. I think its fair to say with this infinite value card has good warrant to be in a slower zoo deck like this.
Lastly, Arch-Thief Rafaam. This guy is the bang that brings this deck together. Situations will play out differently and you may choose Mirror of Doom or Timepiece of Horror, but I have found the most success with discovering Lantern of Power. This deck is sticky minion heavy and you will often have a target for it especially if Dreadsteed is around. I usually try to use it as a finisher though.
So that's my deck try it out! I think its more consistant than normal zoo, but see for yourself and let me know.
Having a great time with this deck. I get run over by aggressive Shamans that catch their curve, but who doesn't?
I don't have Gormok the Impaler, so I've swapped in a Frostwolf Warlord until I do.
Dreadsteed is a little hit or miss for me, but if I get it out at the right time with board control I normally get a lot of value out of it. It's less fun when someone steals it from you though.
Thanks for the deck!
Interesting deck, will try it out. I will probably try to squeeze nzoth and brann in there though.
