Introduction
Three months ago I made a post about an aggro mill deck I made. Since then I moved on and started playing different decks and some of the cards in the old deck even got nerfed. A few days ago I decided to take a look at my old deck to try and update it and make it work again. I was legend rank 450 when I started playing the new version of the aggro mill. I decided I would post an update on the aggro mill deck here if I got to top 100 I reached it, so here we go.
Milling talk
First things first, the deck is more aggro than it is mill. Think of it as an extremely aggressive deck that sometimes have great mill opportunities. Say the enemy has 9 cards, then you play mukla, now he only gains 1 banana and the card he would have drawn next turn get burned. Of course this works even better when you can sap in the same turn to make it work like assassinate.
What you should not attempt to do with this deck is see the other guy with 5 cards in his hand and then try to fill it up with the oracle plus 2 shadowsteps. Sure you burn 2 cards, but you also gave him 4 new ones he would not have had and you used 2 shadowsteps to accomplish it. There are many ways to be creative with milling, just be smart about it.
Mulliganing
This deck relies heavily on early pressure, so mulligan aggressively for 1 drops. If you don't have a 1 drop in your hand and you go first I would mulligan it all trying to get it. If I go second I would keep an SI:7/Edwin even if I had no 1 drops just because it works so well with the coin. If I do have a 1 drops I will not keep a second 1 drop instead I will mulligan it looking for 2 and 3 drops to fill out my curve.
Gameplan
Go for early board control, it is usually not hard to achieve with all the tempo cards in a rogue's arsenal.
Whenever you have a clear board and are about to attack face with one of your minions give it cold blood if you can. At worst it is 4 damage to the enemy for 1 mana, at best he will not be able to remove it and it can snowball into a quick victory.
While playing your normal game keep an eye on the amount of cards in the other player's hand, if it is close to full you should look for opportunies to play your oracles to both fill up your own hand and to burn his cards at the same time. If that never happens and you start to run out of strong plays it is ok to just play the coldlight oracle without burning any cards beause at that point 2 cards will likely help you more than him.
Sap, save it for a big creatue 5+ mana, a taunt in the way of your leeroy or if you can burn a decent minion because his hand is already full when you sap.
The goal of the early gave is take off the top of his health, get him down below 20 hp while playing a lot of card draw minions like loot hoarders and acolytes to cycle through your deck. If he ever spends removal cards to kill a cantrip minion that is a huge gain for you.
Now late game you are looking for combos to finish him off, the classic leeroy->shadowstep->shadowstep for 18 damage. Often times though you can kill them without even needing leeroy. If you get out a strong Edwin and Mukla early on together with a cold blood you can sometimes win before a miracle rogue can even get an auctioneer out.
Thanks for reading this far!
Blade flurry is now not playable...esp in aggro
what card could i trade for king mukia? is there another card i could use instead of that?
Dr. Boom
or better yet, Tinkers Oil
Thank you
Would Lorewalker Cho almost have a use in a mill deck? Perhaps in a more stictly mill, but he puts cards in hand opponents hand, gives you cards if they try to cast. Wont give them your spells if their hand is full. In a different kind of mill than the one shown, would let you play spells that have draw effects, giving them spells that have draw effects so they might be less inclined to play them.
I still doubt Lorewalker Cho would be great in this that kind of deck either, but I'm always trying to find ways to use useless cards, you know? :)
Like how noone used Doomsayer before Frost Mage was discovered.
I already have Blood Knight to replace Mukla. I've tried perdition's blade as a replacement for vancleef since I don't have that either, but it doesn't seem to get a lot of mileage. Would Questing Adventurer, Arcane golem or Headcrack be good replacements?
I love the deck and watching you play has given me some good ideas how to play it and how to win with it, so thanks for that! But I was wondering about certain matchups especially hand lock. Against handlock I can burst him VERY quickly but not quick enough to finish him off before he can siphon soul/taunt up a giant and after that I'm stuck! Any tips? I really like keeping sap and leper gnomes against them, but are there certain strategies you have to be more successful against them? Thanks, and good luck in your games! :)
Also freeze mage is crazy hard to beat. Do you think its best to have the same approach against handlock and try to make them overdraw?
Good deck and nice YT vids. What do you think about adding a second Blade Flurry, and deleting either a Leper Gnome, Loot Hoarder, or a Sap? Also what is your thought about replacing Mukla with an Arcane Golem (I have KM, but am thinking that AG gives some additional burst potential and allows more combos with Cold Blood/Shadow Step, almost like a Leeroy Jr.)
Great Deck Colma! This deck feels so much better than the backspace version (just personal preference).
Keep up the great work :)
hey colma, for can i replace edwin and thalnos? and for what card? thx u. last version of the deck gave me a 3th rank.
Great deck and fun to play. Has the early plays / control of Tempo with the Miracle burst finisher.
Are there any circumstances that you'd keep the Assassins Blade in your opening hand?
Colma, could you update it, please?
Ok, then just add a word or something in the guide, so it results up to date :)
Made an account just to say how awesome this deck is! It's well suited for my aggro playstyle. Went from rank 14-6 today. Hopefully I can get that Legend card back this month :)
Cheers lad.
Hey man, I thank you so much for this deck. I am absolutely lovely and rocking it, made it to rank 4 so far and hope to reach legend by the end of the season for the first time!
I however have two questions, hope you could answer them :P ;
1. What would you replace Mukla with? Atm I am using a Blood Knight since I dont have a Mukla.
2. How do you deal with zoo? I am having big trouble against them usually, they always overwhelm me so fast, and I found I really have to be lucky with card draw to beat them.
Also thanks for your road to legend video's, they helped me alot in understanding to playing this deck! (Wish more deck builders would do this, hint hint..)
Please tell me what would you put If dont have the Edwin VanCleef
Totally loving this deck. It's like a great combination of the tempo and miracle play styles.
I also got to Backstab my Leper Gnome for the kill twice already.
Still playing this shizzle, because it's the highest I ever got with Rogue last season (rank 5) and it's fun. How are you guys doing at Druids though? Some just neutralize me with endless silence, taunt, Cairne stuff. And some just kill me with their running tree combo out of nowhere (had one that did 24 damage in one turn, he had two minions on the board) just before I plan my kill.
