Mulligan/Strategy
Warlock
Keep: Fiery War Axe,Armorsmith,Acolyte of Pain, Ravaging Ghoul
Zoo is a pretty good matchup for this specific type of Control Warrior, you want to keep the board clear as much as possible with the weapons and early minions such as Armorsmith and Acolyte of Pain. Be very careful with the use or your Revenge and Brawl as the zoo can fill the board again quite quickly. I like to Brawl when the Zoo player is running low on cards or when I have no other option. Also keep in mind that Revenge is often a game ender to the Zoo player when used while you are below 13 life as it's a very good board clear. Keep your Execute and Shield Slams for their bigger minions.
Reno is more about building armor and removing their big threats when they come out. Can be a more difficult match up and can be pretty tough once Lord Jaraxxus comes into play. Once that happens try and burst him down with Grommash Hellscream or use The golden monkey to take him into fatigue.
Rogue
Keep: Fiery War Axe, Armorsmith, Acolyte of Pain, Bash,
Against miracle it's all about building armor and removing Gadgetzan Auctioneer as quickly as possible. Keep Brawl for when they fill the board and use Conceal. Remove any big threats when you can so they have less potential for a final game ending burst.
Shaman
Keep: Fiery War Axe, Armorsmith, Acolyte of Pain, Ravaging Ghoul
When facing Shaman it's all about the removal of their early minions and totems. Use weapons to remove and small threats while using cards like Revenge and Ravaging Ghoul to remove the totems. The real MVP of this match up is Baron Geddon as he can completely remove and entire boards worth of totems in just a single turn. Use other sources of removal for their bigger threats then run away with the game with cards like Harrison Jones and Justicar Trueheart.
Warrior
Keep: Elise Starseeker, Justicar Trueheart, Fiery War Axe
Against control warrior it's all about who can be more greedy and get away with it. Mulligan hard for Elise Starseeker and Justicar Trueheart as they are the most important cards in this matchup. Something to always keep in mind is how many cards you and your opponent are drawing as to you always want to be ahead heading into the fatigue game. Remove big minions with Gorehowl to save other removals and keep Harrison Jones for their Gorehowl as that can be a huge swing in tempo.
Against patron its all about have a the Brawl whenever they have their big Patron turn. It's usually down hill from there for them after you pull that off. Try and save your other removal for threats like Ragnaros the Firelord and Grommash Hellscream and you should win the majority of this match up.
Paladin
Keep: Fiery War Axe, Armorsmith, Acolyte of Pain, Ravaging Ghoul, Elise Starseeker
The majority of Paladin in this meta seems to be the N'Zoth, the Corrupter deck. Always keep at least one Brawl for when he plays N'Zoth, the Corrupter and remove his smaller threats with weapons and Ravaging Ghoul. Keep Control of the board as much as possible while being very cautious of their Equality Wild Pyromancer combo. If it goes into fatigue you have a good chance of winning with the armor built up throughout the game and with the Golden Monkey.
Mage
Keep: Fiery War Axe, Armorsmith, Acolyte of Pain, Bash
Against tempo mage it's very important to keep control of the board. Use weapons to remove their early threats and always make sure you have a way to remove Flamewaker as you can go downhill in a hurry if it stays on board long enough. Armor up as much as possible and get good trades with your minions. Bash is a great way to remove Ethereal Conjurer and Gorehowl will come up huge for you in this match up.
Against Freeze mage just armor up every turn.
Hunter
Keep: Fiery War Axe, Armorsmith, Acolyte of Pain, Bash, Revenge, Ravaging Ghoul
Against midrange you want to be able to remove their board as efficiently as possible. Hunter has a lot of 1 and 2 health minions so cards like Revenge and Ravaging Ghoul can devastate a hunters board very quickly. Use other removal for their big threats like Savannah Highmane and use Baron Geddon to clean up anything that's left. Hunter lacks good card draw so if you can sustain their early blows you should be able to just ware them down with Ragnaros the Firelord and Justicar Trueheart.
Druid
Keep: Fiery War Axe,Armorsmith, Acolyte of Pain, Bash
Is their a better feeling than knowing you won't instantly die to combo anymore? In this match up your control just wins out. remove minions while putting your own down and once you get to Ragnaros the Firelord and Ysera the druid can pretty much do nothing about it. This a very favorable match up for the Control Warrior now.
Priest
Keep: Elise Starseeker, Justicar Trueheart, Fiery War Axe
This matchup is pretty much the same as the Control Warrior match up. Use weapons and Bash to remove their minions while also being very cautious for the potential Auchenai Soulpriest burst. Justicar Trueheart is a big card to find in this match up to keep tanking up for the fatigue game because this match up will probably go there. Use Brawl if they get to heavy on board for a reset and just prepare for a long intense game.
Conclusion:
Hey guys, I just want to thank everyone for the support as this is my first deck I've ever posted on here. Let me know how I did on this write up and I wish everyone success in the future using this deck!
I'd say not because those battlecries are vital to your longevity. If you caught either Elise or Justicar with Wynn - Game over.
Hi, thank you for the guide. i'm running a very similar version.
How do you feel about Malkorok in CW?
Malkorok is undoubtedly a very powerful card, but I don't think it has a spot in Control Warrior.
The strong tempo aspect isn't usually needed, because Control Warrior doesn't care much about tempo, and even though he puts the warrior in a strong position in a number of times, he's plain gamelosing at other times. Both Cursed Blade and Charged Hammer are just catastrophic results from the Battlecry.
I played him for quite a while, because the strong tempo push just feels really good. But those two come up more often than you'd like, which adds an inconsistency factor which CW really doesn't need and can't handle when it comes up.
Also there are some other weapons that just don't do enough to justify the use of the card. Lights Justice, Argent Lance, Perdition's Blade, Stormforged Axe and Tentacles for Arms are basically worthless beyond turn 7, because 1 or 2 damage is just not enough to make a real impact.
Charged hammer is not that catastrophic. You will simply not use the last charge and/or overwrite it with another weapon. Only risk is that opponent will destroy your weapon, but not so many decks run Harrisson or Ooze now.
Pretty many decks run weapon removal actually. Also you're not even able to overwrite the charged hammer, so you can't use gorehowl over the rest of the game if you haven't used it already. This alone might be bad enough to lose the game by itself.
any replacement for Barron Geddon or Harrison Jones ?
For Harrison Jones [/card] you can do [card]Acidic Swamp Ooze and for Baron Geddon you can do another removal card like Cleave or something like that but he is pretty essential when facing shaman and hunter
started today today @ rank 15 now im 11 in a win streak... im like 6-1 now ;) thx for the deck
Just recently found the dust to craft Grom and I can finally play a control warrior deck, I'm having a lot of fun thanks for the list!
What do you think of replacing 2x Armorsmith with 2x Doomsayer?
try it out, see which one works better for the decks you're playing against.
If you can't get to rank 16 with this deck, it's probably just your play. You should keep practicing.
0% winrate against any Priest deck. They steal everything, wait until you have to use brawl, then go all in with N'zoth etc. Have no idea how to improve that matchup (especially not if my last 5 cards are always Justicar..
You have to bait out entombs, as well as hold sylvanus and shield slam to get high value. Always hold one brawl for N'zoth, if not two. Try not to allow them to get too much card draw that will lose you the game. I have a pretty good win rate against priest with this deck.
Priest was always an unfavored match for control warrior.
One tip that helps is that you should not give them entomb targets, the only way to avoid your Sylvanas entombed is to kill her with Shield Slam in order to steal something from their board, Ysera and Ragnaros is almost guaranteed to get entombed also so try to play them when you have resources to remove them later.
I faced so many priests from 15 to 8 and still haven't found a consistent way to deal with them, especially N'Zoth is really difficult matchup.
Also the Shade is getting insane value for them 90% of the time, Sylvanas, Gnommash, Ragnaros, Ysera, Jones fuck this card.
As mentioned in the guide hard mulligan for Justicar and Elise and hope for the best.
Just happened to me :(
Friggin' Shifting Shade stole my Golden Monkey from my deck of still 18 cards!
N'Zoth Priest is an absolute control killer, if they don't draw atrociously bad or get super unlucky.
Even before they get N'Zoth itself out, they usually take the game, just because of their insane value cards. Control warrior can't pressure hard enough to make them play super defensively, so they usually have all the time they need to develop their Shifting Shades, Museum Curators and other threats like Cairne Bloodhoof or Sylvanas Windrunner.
I had a situation where my Priest opponent played 3 Cairnes over the course of the game (2 from Museum Curator), every single one being a huge challenge to deal with. When N'Zoth came to the board the game was obviously over.
It's just super hard to deal with your own removal and threats that they steal via Entomb and Shifting Shade, while at the same time they also have the stuff from their own deck.
Sure it's not unwinnable. But the Priest is hugely favored from my observation.
bait out entombs with what? what fuckin deck are you playing?
Luckly for CW the meta is too agro for priests :D It's quite hard to survive high pressure from the agro's early game (or they should has the perfect draw), so there is not too much priests in ladder (at least around rank 15-10 at EU).
CWs, at opposite, has more chance to deal with early agression. But bad draws sometimes ruines everything :(
Are there any replacements for Revenge? There's no way for me to get it.
