Just playing around with some ideas for the new SMOrc hunter for the upcoming season. With Naxx and GvG rotated out, some key cards disappear from the burn arsenal. (Un)fortunately, some key card slots cannot be so easily filled, such as Mad Scientist

Slot Replacements

  • Leper Gnome is filled with the new Fiery Bat. The stats of the new card reflect the old leper gnome, but the deathrattle hits a random enemy instead. Still could hit face. The biggest advantage of this card is that it could trade up when the opponent goes to trade.
  • Haunted Creeper has a tough role to fill. The new Infested Wolf isn't quite a simulacrum of the creeper, because of the cost. I choose Big Toad for this slot instead. Again, hits face really well, and can possibly deter value trades with his deathrattle.
  • Mad Scientist doesn't have an equal. His role is unique because he thins the secrets out of your deck so that you're more likely to draw gas. Putting another decent two drop is the best we can do. Twisted Wargen Actually fits this slot. He's decent to play at almost any time because of his evasion. It's a strict upgrade to the Wargen Infiltrator, which I decided to play Brave Archer in its stead (tl;dr I prefer her as a top deck because she'd be worth 4 damage, while top decking Wargen Infiltrator will be a dead draw).
  • Lastly, Arcane Golem was a nice closer that I used to run quite regularly. Simply running a Wolfrider in its stead will be sufficient. Note that I also run Argent Horserider. He used to replace the Wolfrider slot, but now they can run in tandem.

Other Card Choices

I had a lot of success with the mixed Secrets style. You can do as you like, but I really enjoy Snake Trap and Bear Trap. I've also run a single Explosive Trap and Freezing Trap as well. It keeps your opponent distracted with the secrets, as well as your board, allowing you to set up to do more damage. It allows you to bluff your plays for some risk/reward payoff. Since Mad Scientist has rotated, I chose to cut Freezing Trap. This is simply to make room for a little more damage in the deck.

I decided to run two finishers. Leeroy Jenkins and Call of the Wild. They both have big upsides, one where Leeroy + Unleash the Hounds can burst for at least an extra two hounds, and CotW buffs what's left on your board and swings for a 5 damage Huffer

Other Comments, Card Replacements

There are a few ways to play the face hunter style. Many people like to run strictly two Explosive Traps. Go ahead and do that. It's all about preference. It helps out with Zoo shenanigans, so it's a nice card to side in when you hit an aggressive period on the ladder.

Leeroy Jenkins is definitely a luxury. I don't recommend going out of your way to craft him unless you can afford him. Definitely run a second Wolfrider instead. He's just a nice piece of burst.

Call of the Wild can be replaced with a second Quick Shot

I absolutely love Brave Archer because she's such a big threat when your hand is empty, and also plays an important role in tempo and filling the curve. You can run Wargen Infiltrator instead.

All in all, this is a pretty cheap deck to build, and definitely takes some practice to master. Aggressive decks will always be a factor in card games, and there's no shame in it. My interest in Face Hunter came when I started playing MTG competitively. The whole "red deck" style was something that I struggled with, which caused me to learn more about it. In that community, mono red "burn face" style isn't looked down upon as much as it is here, and the interactivity is about the same. When you come to learn a deck style intimately, you are more equipped when you encounter it on ladder while playing any other style (be it midrange, combo, control). I'm excited for the new cards and their roles in ALL playstyles. I hope this deck will inspire some creative discussion. Enjoy!
