Update (as I'm sure you'll read in the comments) Second day of streaming did not go so well. I tinkered with the list a lot and ended up tilting. I have every confidence that this deck is still great (as you can't get from 5k legend to 103 with any deck) and will continue playing it on stream every day. 

So as I sat there, pondering which wacky deck to play next, I considered the cards that will be rotating out in standard. The shredder and Doctor Boom. The mechs. Love them or hate them, these cards have been instrumental to the meta for the last year and a half of the game, and while they may not be missed, they wont be forgotten. 

There are a lot of mech cards that I do not think every met their full potential; almost all of the class specific ones. Mech Priest was tinkered with, but the upgraded repair bot wasn’t quite enough to give Priests a reason to play tempo. Fel cannon has seen some use, but running a deck 100% made up of mechs just isn’t possible, due to many of the synergy cards (tinkertown technician and cogmaster) not being mechs themselves. this deck choice also takes implosion out of the running, something which just isn’t sensible giving the power of the card (and its ability to tilt.) But what about Mech Hunter. I’ve experimented with it a little before, but I’ve never seen it as a proper meta deck.

Naturally I couldn’t resist the challenge. 

Hunters are naturally aggressive decks, and Metaltooth Leaper can act as a mini savage roar. The possibility HAD to be there. So I gave it a shot.

As it happens, playing mech hunter results in a natural shift of Hunter deck building. Spider tank is a vital 3 drop in mech decks, so what about the Hunter 3 drops? Eagle horn Bow, Animal Companion, Kill Command, Unleash the Hounds? Most of these were going to have to go.

I decided to build this deck by following patterns used by mech mages. Mech mage has always been a popular successful deck, due to Mage’s natural ability to play tempo with its hero power. So what is it that mech mages do so well? They snowball the game out of control with strong tempo in the early game, and (depending on the build) Then burn the opponent down with Antonidas and a flurry of fireballs, or they just out-board their opponent by mowing them down with Fel Reavers. 

As it happens, we can’t really rely on either of these win conditions. We do not have antonidas in our hunter deck, and at the moment I believe that Pilotted Sky Golom is a better fit for the deck than Fel Reaver (due to its similarities to Savannah Highmane). 

What we can do, even better than the mech mage, is seize and secure the early game with the sheer tempo power of cogmaster, mechwarper, clockwork gnome and Glaivezooker and deal so much damage then that even if the opponent DOES get the board back, they will lose after the hero power is pressed enough times.

All of that being said, I have only clocked around 50 games with this deck (taking me from around 5k legend to 103 legend EU… Which I’m pretty happy with at this stage in the season!) I believe that the best matches for this deck are Combo Druid, Zoo, Secret Paladin, and the worst matchups are control or patron warrior, Reno Lock or… anything with high amounts of board clears and healing.

I will continue to play this deck through to the end of the season and beyond, and continue to gather matchup data. 

As usual though, I don’t want to waste my time writing about this deck if there is no interest in it, so I will monitor the comments and likes , and if this deck does continue to do well and generate interest on hearthpwn, then I will do the usual and create card list reasonings/ muligans/ replacements/ videos and do a coaching give-away.
