PROOF OF LEGEND:
VIDEO EXPLANATION:
GAME PLAN:
We have a Tempo Mage here, so we need to gain as much Tempo as possible while being as aggro as possible, thanks to the extra mileage of the Ice Block for its main effect (of having us not die once) and the collateral effect: the mistakes that the opponent will make during the game, not really knowing what this secret will be.
You see, when people play an underpar turn, trying to proc our secret, playing crappy minions/spell, they are doing the correct play. But if we have an Ice Block out, they'll waste their turn in vain. All the while we build up Tempo and board presence. Or we shoot them in the face with our burn spell. Or both!
Play for Tempo, remove minions efficiently and let the PEW PEW begin!
CARD CHOICES:
This time around I'll go over only the "unconventional" choices
Really strong opening vs many classes paired with a Mana Wyrm and a Coin. Protects our board from weapons/minions and lets us unleash the sinergy of our deck. Often gaining a single turn could be game winning and don't forget that decks like a ZooLock that is a little behind could have trouble removing them efficiently. Playing Archmage Antonidas followed by this, gives you the first Fireball and could protect our Fireball's Santa from the minions that are trying to kill him.
There it is, the star of the deck. The Playmaker. The MVP. Just thinking the faces of our opponents while they struggle to guess which damn secret hides the little purple dot, makes my smile grow wider every second they spend wondering. Countless times the opponent tries to proc the secret with a crappy minion or an useless spell. You know what makes me happier? When they realize (usually too late for them) that is an Ice Block and they have thrown away their winning condition AND their turns trying to guess. But you know what makes me REALLY happy? When I play another secret and they start the guessing work all over again. Also pretty much guarantess the value of both Mad Scientist having 3 different Secrets in the deck. Yay!
SUBS:
The only substitutions that I could advise are this ones:
1x Mirror Image ► 1x Arcane Blast
if you really feel like you need some spells to board control early in the game.
1x Ice Block ► 1x Duplicate / 1x Effigy
if you don't own one or you simply don't want to run it. They can have a similar effect on the guessing works of your opponents, but they do have a negative synergy with the early game minions and 0/2 images... run them at your own risk.
MULLIGAN STRATEGY:
Try your best to have the smoothest mana curve possible. Try to exploit the Coin with the Flamewaker or Mana Wyrm synergy, or in the worst case with Archmage Antonidas to create an extra Fireball
Always keep Mad Scientist and Mana Wyrm
Vs Shamans, Druids, Mages, Paladins and Warlocks keeping also a Frostbolt to kill the early minions is also advisable.
MATCH UPS:
This is the record of my win rate from rank 4 3 stars to Legend. Yay for a meta full of Druids and Secret Pally to wreck really hard!
If you have any question feel free to post in the comments and I'll answer everyone asap, and don't forget to leave a like on the deck or on any of my socials! See you around ;)
I'm still rocking this deck too. I made one change and I'm pretty happy with it, was - 1 Azure Drake +1 Etheral Conjurer. The bigger body and sometimes pyroblast has won me some games vs priest that i should've probably lost. Thoughts?
the conjurer is too slow imho and only effective as a minion if we have full board control, drake has spell damage and draws you a card from your deck (hopefully a useful one XD)
thank you! happy that you like the deck, have fun and grind up the ladder! :)
too slow imho and only effective as a minion if we have full board control :) gl hf
as any other tempo mage decklist I fear XD gl hf
After 20 games against warlock I have 100% win rate against both reno and zoo ... don't blame the deck
yeah i have like 10-2 vs both warlock, the only times ive lost have been close and they had to healbot, reno, and jaraxxis.
zoo is a tough match up anyway, but against reno lock you should destroy them with your burst potential :) gl hf
is there any replacement for Flamewaker ? i've been dying to play mage but didnt bother to pay for BRM..
yeah sadly no replacements :) gl hf
I saw Kolento running this deck, but with the following changes:
+2 Arcane Blast
+1 Ethereal Conjurer
-2 Mirror Image
-1 Ice Block
What do you think of those substitutions? I know your stance on Ice Block (and I kind of agree), but what about Arcane Blast over Mirror Image? Or Ethereal Conjurer, for that matter?
I think adding just one arcane blast and keeping the iceblock should be fine
conjurer is too slow for my liking and only effective as a minion only if you have total board control. drakes draws you good cards rather than random ones, and can help you to kill a minion/opponent with spell damage! I prefer images over blasts because they synergize better w Antonidas and help stall the board 1 turn. It's personal preference I guess :) gl hf
Ice Block is not that hard to guess but whatever you think...
they still try to proc it. sometimes they "see" that isn't a mirror entity so they stop playing spells or viceversa ... if you don't think that's an advantage you tell me what it is XD gl hf
What do you think about arcane blast in your deck?
you can sub them instead of Mirror Image but I prefer them because they can stall the board 1 turn to win you the game vs minion based decks and synergizes better with Antonidas :) gl hf
Hi mate, this deck seems to me as a standard Tempo mage just an Ice block included. Can you please explain why you are omitting Loatheb and what is your gameplan against Zoo Locks - do you try to burn them down and also about heavy control decks running Renno for example. I am asking these questions as I was playing tempo mage some season ago but since then it was not viable anymore. Haven't tried it in the current meta but seems like it works again :)
it is an aggroish Tempo Mage with an Ice Block. Ice Block protects you from the same threaths a Loatheb will, you don't care too much about board wipes and miracle rogue and freeze get wrecked by the Ice Block. Vs Zoos you need to get early control and proceed to stockpile as much burn spells possible to burst him down. Reno is even better because you don't killl it slowly, but again you try to burst him down from high health :) gl hf
The deck certainly looks interesting enough. Mage was my first gold hero so maybe I'll try this out for this season. Although it seems like just the standard Tempo mage just with an ice block which I'm not too sure about.
