PROOF OF LEGEND:
VIDEO EXPLANATION:
GAME PLAN:
We have a Tempo Mage here, so we need to gain as much Tempo as possible while being as aggro as possible, thanks to the extra mileage of the Ice Block for its main effect (of having us not die once) and the collateral effect: the mistakes that the opponent will make during the game, not really knowing what this secret will be.
You see, when people play an underpar turn, trying to proc our secret, playing crappy minions/spell, they are doing the correct play. But if we have an Ice Block out, they'll waste their turn in vain. All the while we build up Tempo and board presence. Or we shoot them in the face with our burn spell. Or both!
Play for Tempo, remove minions efficiently and let the PEW PEW begin!
CARD CHOICES:
This time around I'll go over only the "unconventional" choices
Really strong opening vs many classes paired with a Mana Wyrm and a Coin. Protects our board from weapons/minions and lets us unleash the sinergy of our deck. Often gaining a single turn could be game winning and don't forget that decks like a ZooLock that is a little behind could have trouble removing them efficiently. Playing Archmage Antonidas followed by this, gives you the first Fireball and could protect our Fireball's Santa from the minions that are trying to kill him.
There it is, the star of the deck. The Playmaker. The MVP. Just thinking the faces of our opponents while they struggle to guess which damn secret hides the little purple dot, makes my smile grow wider every second they spend wondering. Countless times the opponent tries to proc the secret with a crappy minion or an useless spell. You know what makes me happier? When they realize (usually too late for them) that is an Ice Block and they have thrown away their winning condition AND their turns trying to guess. But you know what makes me REALLY happy? When I play another secret and they start the guessing work all over again. Also pretty much guarantess the value of both Mad Scientist having 3 different Secrets in the deck. Yay!
SUBS:
The only substitutions that I could advise are this ones:
1x Mirror Image ► 1x Arcane Blast
if you really feel like you need some spells to board control early in the game.
1x Ice Block ► 1x Duplicate / 1x Effigy
if you don't own one or you simply don't want to run it. They can have a similar effect on the guessing works of your opponents, but they do have a negative synergy with the early game minions and 0/2 images... run them at your own risk.
MULLIGAN STRATEGY:
Try your best to have the smoothest mana curve possible. Try to exploit the Coin with the Flamewaker or Mana Wyrm synergy, or in the worst case with Archmage Antonidas to create an extra Fireball
Always keep Mad Scientist and Mana Wyrm
Vs Shamans, Druids, Mages, Paladins and Warlocks keeping also a Frostbolt to kill the early minions is also advisable.
MATCH UPS:
This is the record of my win rate from rank 4 3 stars to Legend. Yay for a meta full of Druids and Secret Pally to wreck really hard!
If you have any question feel free to post in the comments and I'll answer everyone asap, and don't forget to leave a like on the deck or on any of my socials! See you around ;)
Funny guide! Well done :)
thank you so much! hope you found it useful too! gl hf
I'm not sure about using Counterspell and swapped it with Arcane Blast (also not sure about this swap)
I'm currently stuck at rank 2-4. I don't know what i'm doing wrong :(
I've only played this deck twice so far but having counterspelled a turn 8 lightbomb and a turn 5 brawl i feel counterspell is pretty amazing assuming you go second.
yeah it can be pretty terrible when you get it lost for the coin, but Counterspell does some awesome things for you and can also get you the same value as the Ice Block when they play around it like a mirror entity, I run Counterspell and Mirror Entity, but it'd be a cool tech to get the ice block in in the right meta. It frees you up for one more turn to get in the face damage and makes it so that you're board stays alive when they push for the lethal. When you think about it, it can be a great tempo play in those regards so it kind of fits the deck theme, although it's a card generally not thought of in this way.
exactly, you can go full face getting ready for next turn lethal, while the Ice Block stop them in their tracks. I've won many games like that :)
well I've personally had much value out of it of course, and you should have the board to deal with Boom... or you can just ignore it and push for lethal thanks to your Ice Block ;) gl hf
look for Mad Scientists and Many Wyrms, and try to build the best curve possible! gl hf
Started this deck at rank 20 after taking a month off. Ice Block has done little to nothing for me other than be dead weight so looking for an alternative soon. So far out of 30 games I managed to get to rank 15. Hit 14 at one point then RNGesus decided to shit on my draw and mulligans so I'm stuck now. All in all the deck is Ok Ice Block is a waste as far as I can see and not many are falling for the "mind fuck" trick that we'd hope for. At 60% win rate I cant complain too much outside of RNG at the moment. Nice and enjoyable deck.
Rank 20-15
Overall 18-12 60% win rate
v. Mage 8-2 80%
v. priest 2-2 50%
v. warrior 2-0 100%
v. warlock 1-2 50%
v. Druid none played
v. Hunter 2-1 67%
v. shaman 2-2 50%
v. paladin 1-2 33%
v. rogue 1-0 100%
well at Rank 20-15 I don't expect people to play around anything... a normal deck with double entity will probably fare better... it's more of a tech for high ranks imho :) gl hf
Will give double entity a try sounds promising. Thanks again for the great deck so far.
my pleasure :)
I had to take a break the draw, mulligans and overall RNG got so bad. Before that the deck was fluid and rewarding.
that's sadly part of the Tempo Mage... sometimes the draws are bad and there's nothing you can do about it... but when the cards are right it's easy peasy ;) gl hf to both!
-1 Arcane Missiles and +1 Arcane Blast will work?
if you want Arcane Blast, you can try to sub it for 1 Mirror Image.. We need the Missiles to combo with the Flamewaker :) gl hf
Got lucky in one match tonight w/ portal. got a 5 mana tirion. Jaina w/ the ashbringer op op
the magic of Unstable eSportals! :)
Have you every thought about adding Gormok into the deck? Seems like he'd be awesome, especially since ur running 2 mirror image
sadly I don't like Gormok too much in the zoo already, our plan is to spam spells not minions :)
