Hello guys I am a multiple time legend player from Croatia and I am presenting you my freeze mage wich I used to hit legend this season. If this deck gets 20 thums up will write a guide about it.
Legend proof (went from 5000 to 900 with this deck again):
As promissed here is the guide.
As you can see in the title my version is not running Archmage Antonidas. The secret is replacing it and some tech cards like Explosive Sheep, Antique Healbot, Flamestrike and Cone of Cold with 2 Forgotten Torch, Coldlight Oracle and the second Acolyte of Pain. You may think that it's not a good replacement as Archmage Antonidas is such a hughe threat on it's own and if he stays alive you win every game. But i found myself many times in the situation where you just can't be patient enought with your cards and you have to waste some burn for some minions and so on and you draw archmage too late to replenish your burn. This is more of an agressive version of the deck where you have to aggresivly search for card draw to draw your winning combo. The other difference is that you have to be more patient with Bloodmage Thalnos. He is still a flexible card but in this version I use him more for the spell damage so it is ok to sub him with Kobold Geomancer.
Pros:
-more card draw
-more early game removal options
Cons:
-limited damage output
-even less chance against warriors
If you can live with the fact that you are not winning against warriors lets go on with the mulligan and matchups
Druid- it's generaly a bad matchup for freeze mage but I think i won 65% of my games vs. druid with this deck because you don't need that big turn with archmage to collect your burn and you can play more agressive with your removal. You are looking for your draw early on. Remember: You don't keep Coldlight Oracle in your starting hand exept you don't have other card draw in your hand. It is much better to use it later in the game because you don't give you'r opponent options early on. You should keep Frostbolt for the Aspirant or Juggler if he is aggro.
Hunter- it's a good matchup for you as you know he doesn't have any heal or anything. The only way to lose is if he rushes you down to fast where you can feel the lack of healbot. You are looking for your draw, Frostbolt and if you don't have a nice curve or scientist you should keep Ice Barrier. You will mostly use Alexstrasza on yourself but that isn't a problem because damage done to him stacks so don't be afraid to push for 2 turn lethals. Be careful if he is midranged. He could be using Flare.
Mage- it depends if he is tempo or freeze. Against tempo keep cycle, Frostbolt, Doomsayer and sometimes torch when you don't have frostbolt. As for hunter you know that your damage stacks so don't me afraid of going into multiple turn lethals. Try the go Doomsayer into entity. Be carefull about Counterspell, and remove his Flamewaker as soon as posible as he is +2 spellpower for him and even better. Against freeze mage keep Emperor. Try to use Doomsayer before his important turns 6,9 and 10 becouse he will usualy go with his threats on those turns. If you have to many cards in your hand don't be afraid of using blizzard on an empty board. You should not proc his barriers.
Paladin- it's the reason to play freeze mage these days as it's an great matchup. You know that he has no burs exept +4 damage mostly (Truesilver Champion and Blessing of Kings. Keep your cycle, Doomsayer and Frost Nova if you have a Doomsayer. There are not so many secrets about this matchup. You keep freezing his board and then you unleash your combo. Note: Be carefull about using secrets when he has a Secretkeeper.
Priest- keep alex and emperor with your cycle. You have all the time of the world. He mostly has no answer for doomsayer other than entomb. When you use alex be sure you can kill him on the next turn or two. Be patient. You can't loose this.
Rogue- it is an easy matchup. The only way for him to win this is Loatheb, Assassin's Blade or a big Edwin. Keep your cycle and that should be enought. Don't be afraid of frostbolting his face ti deny block procing.
Shaman- it's hard but you can win. Keep your cycle, Frostbolt and Barrier. Damage to him stacks but his damage is not denyable like hunters (he doesn't use board)
Warlock- Against zoo you should win most of the time. He doesn't run heals and he uses board for damage so it's a perfect target for you. Keep your cycle cards. Against reno try to put him on about 24 life. I am serious. He will feel safe but you can burst him from that point. Be patient. Don't push for too much damage and run into a reno.
Warrior- It was an 5% winrate matchup. Whitout Flamestrike for patrons and Archmage it feels like 1% now. You basicly have to hope for a perfect hand and the worst hand from him to win so good luck.
Any replacement for the second Doomsayer?
Kirin Tor Mage is the only logical choice
you even got your lvl 60mage with that match, haha. good job!
Created an account account just to say thank you for sharing this deck. I played Midrange Druid when I first started playing because the first epics I got from packs were FoN, AoL, and Aow, but bursting a Renolock for 29 damage with a dream Thaurissan hand was so disgusting and satisfying at the same time.
Subbed in a Scarab for the lolz while I'm still saving for Thalnos. I once had a Spellbender catch a Blessing of Kings which was hilarious, though I think a Kobold would be better during clutch moments to ensure lethal.
I'm not yet that used to freeze mage, but I'm really enjoying playing this version especially since I don't have Antonidas and Thalnos yet. Thanks a lot!
Hey man, awesome deck! I really mean that. I am having great success with your version of freeze mage. I often win with 1-3 burn cards remaining in hand :D
I love how the deck allows you to be more liberal with burn spells to stay alive, particularly with forgotten torch (actually good to use these early)
I like coldlight oracle here as we often benefit more from the draw than the opponent (they might even overdraw!)
I prefer loot hoarders over the novice engineers. We don't really have a sense of urgency in the early game to warrant the novice engineer's battlecry. I prefer the 2/1 body with a deathrattle for greater board presence.
So far, I've only been losing to Druid (when they ramp hard and i draw poorly). I've faced Warrior twice and won both times (maybe because they drew poorly)
I f***ing did it!!!
Interesting way to play Freeze Mage. I wonder what would be the best replacement for Coldlight Oracle, as I hate this card (plus, there are already 9 draw cards, counting the Mad Scientist, which is enough, I think).
- Archmage Antonidas, which would be here to let you freely use some spell on clearing minion and garanty enough burst in the end ? (I know the deck is designed to work without him, I just wonder)
- A Pyroblast, which would have the same effect as Antonidas ?
- Another freezing card, like Cone of Cold to stall the game a bit more ?
- A Flamestrike to clear the board late game ?
Good job great deck, thumbs up deserved, currently 22-4 with this deck, interesting fact is that i'm crushing all popular decks ,including reno locks, secret pallys, combo druids and stuff, easily, recommend this to other hearthpwn dudes too
Amazing deck win-stric from 3 to 1
not running antonidas and/or pyro limits your damage output too much imo.
Just give me a replacement for Alexstrasza too, and I'll be able to play this.
what the strategy is?
should you keep stalling and gathering spells untill alextra comes or you should hit face from the start.
If you don't know how Freeze Mage works you probably haven't been playing Hearthstone long enough to play it very well.
if you don't know that there are diffrent versions of freeze mage you probably have not playing HS long enough. LBYS aggro freeze mage uses coldlights, torches and no antonydas/pyro. and it based on early aggro.
this deck lools like hybrid of two. besides it's obvious that if you keep all this crazy cycling and not playing spells you will fall into overdraw easely.
so imo question is quite reasonable.
Imo it has to be played as a classic Freeze Mage. Basically, the torches help you to trade in the early game and replace Antonidas late game. So I'd say that you have to keep as long as you can your burst spell, and only use it in the "extrem" conditions, for instance a frostbolt on a Darnasus, or a fireball on a Thaurissan is fine and even mandatory. But if you are not under pressure, try to keep it to finish the game after Alexstraza. Just use your weak minion in the beginning and your freezing + doomsayer in the mid/late game to clean the board.
I've tried to include Antonidas in place of coldlight cause he had saved me so many game in the past and I think it could be an alternate win condition if you don't get your torches back or fireball, but maybe it's too much. I've played 4 game with this deck and Antonidas, I won two without using Antonidas who had remained in my hand, one win without having Antonidas at all, and one win which I would have lost without him against a Shaman. Some more game are still necessary to see if he has his place in this deck !
This is my opinion !
Edit : Another win against secret pal thanks to Anto :)
can i replace bloodmage with novice engineer?
You are using it more for the spell damage than cycle in this version of Freeze Mage so I'd argue Kobold Geomancer is a better replacement for Bloodmage Thalnos.
and what's your opinion on pyroblast?
