Hi guys, i'm 10x times legend player and i mostly play rogue, so i decided to help some of you and make a guide for an awesome SuperJJ's deck (with couple of changes of my own which im going to explain).
So let's start with card choices and possible replacements.
2x Backstab : great card in any stage of the game, dont feel like it needs much explanations, but can mention that u got to maximize the effect all the time. I mean dont backstab Zombie Chow, dont backstab Shielded Minibot on turn 2 if u have SI:7 Agent in hand. Be greedy with backstab! Dont be scared to backstab your own minions if u feel like u need an extra draw. It's the cheapest spell for your Gadgetzan Auctioneer and the cheapest combo activator. And Malygos + Backstab can deal with almost any big threat.
2x Preparation : it's a tempo card for early game (Bloodmage Thalnos + Preparation + Fan of Knives / Blade Flurry for an early clear), then it's a tool for your Violet Teacher and the best use of Preparation is for your Gadgetzan Auctioneer draws and Malygos burst. Try save 1 copy for Gadgetzan Auctioneer at least, it's important. No replacements for these 2 of course.
2x Deadly Poison : try to save the second charge for your Blade Flurry, cause sometimes u cant find the second copy when it's much needed.
1x Sinister Strike : the only card u can use with Malygos without any Emperor Thaurissan or Preparation help, that's the first reason this card made the cut. In aggro match ups dont be afraid just to throw it if u need activate combo effect plus it's a cheaper spell than Shiv for Gadgetzan Auctioneer. U can replace it for the second Shiv any time, but i like to have 1 copy in the deck.
2x Blade Flurry : your main board clear and also face damage tool. It's a bit hard to explain properly when to use it right, but the best word is "greed". Sometimes the greed can backfire, but the best timed Blade Flurry = GG for your opponent most of the time. If u feel like u can tank some extra face damage, dont flurry then. Try to flurry and take board control in the same time (the best case are with Violet Teacher or Malygos on board. Against aggro it might not be the case. First Blade Flurry can be used even on turn 3, it's OK if u can stabilize afterwards.
2x Eviscerate : your best single target removal and face finisher in the late game. Dont have much of explanations on this one, but dont be scared to use it for 2 damage sometimes if u dont have other tools to deal with Knife Juggler for example or any minion in face Shaman/face Hunter match up.
1x Sap and 1x Big Game Hunter : best Sap targets in my opinion are Piloted Shredder, Sludge Belcher, Sylvanas Windrunner, Tirion Fordring, buffed priest/pally minions and Savannah Highmane. Save it for Doomsayer against Freeze Mage and u can sap Mad Scientist any time to fight for tempo against Hunters and Mages. But u cant Sap Dr. Boom and that's why Big game hunter made the cut in my version of the deck. + it's the best tool to deal with Mysterious Challenger after u popped all the secrets. U can use 2x Sap any time but dealing with Dr. Boom will never be easy.
1x Shiv : most of the time just a draw more card, sometimes a removal with ur hero power or spell power, can be a finisher with Malygos, but i never feel like i want to save it till late game. Try to get smth of it, but shiv face to draw is also fine most of the time. But DONT keep it when mulligan.
2x Fan of Knives : Muster for Battle and Imp-losion counter, Consecration with Spellpower, Hell on Earth with Malygos. And even just a draw on turn 3 against warrior and rogue is fine.
2x SI:7 Agent : if u can combo it, then it's a 2for1 card, which is always cool. Backstab and Deadly Poison are the best cards to combo with and get maximum effect, but dont worry to play it on empty board just for pressure in any match up.
2x Tomb Pillager : MVP boys, giving u 2 more 0 mana spells, which give even more mana. Useful notes: Try to SMOrc as much as u can withTomb Pillager, while controlling the board with spells and save coins for Gadgetzan Auctioneer if u get such possibilities.
1x Bloodmage Thalnos : your cheap spellpower bonus and a draw card at the same time. There's no other card with same effects, but i know how much u dont want to craft this one before all your Booms, Rags, Sylvs and some epics. Replacements i can advice: Earthen Ring Farseer, second Sap, Edwin VanCleef, second Shiv, Kobold Geomancer why not?
1x Violet Teacher. My favourite card. If aggro ignores it, they pay hard next 1-2 turns when u trade free with army of tokens. Try to get some effect at once with Preparation + Sap / Eviscerate or Coin with another spell. Having 1-2 tokens right after u play it is way better and makes your opponent to react. And the time is all you need to win with this deck.
2x Antique Healbot : cancer meta needs some answers and sometimes 1 copy is not enough especially if it's in the bottom of the deck. If u think u can survive with 1 copy or without Antique Healbot, then take Sludge Belcher, Loatheb or Edwin VanCleef.
2x Azure Drake : they was never bad. Sweet backstabs, flurrys and Fan of knives, not much i can add here.
1x Emperor Thaurissan : first tool that made this deck viable and highest tier competitive (second is Tomb Pillager). Try to play it on empty board or when u have cards like Gadgetzan Auctioneer and/or Malygos in hand.
2x Gadgetzan Auctioneer: Draw machine and a threat your opponent cant ignore, so try to get effect at once, keeping Coins, cheap spells and Preparation for your Gadgetzan Auctioneer. Getting 2 cards and Gadgetzan Auctioneer on empty board is OK scenario.
1x Malygos : your finisher and a big body to deal with, but we talk about his usage below.
How to MULLIGAN
- Paladin: consider secret pally all the time, try to get (in the exact order) Fan of Knives, Backstab, SI:7 Agent, Violet Teacher, Blade Flurry, Sap. Keep any of this, dont keep anything else. U can keep Preparation if u have Violet Teacher already.
- Druid: Backstab for Darnassus Aspirant first, keep Deadly Poison if u dont have Backstab. Sap is always a keep and hard Innervate counter. Dont keep other spells, try to get your minions, except Malygos and Gadgetzan Auctioneer.
- Hunter: Backstab, SI:7 Agent, Blade Flurry, Eviscerate for Misha and Leokk. If u have some early game in hand already, you can even keep 1 Antique healbot, but search for early game first. Dont keep Shiv, Deadly Poison. Save Sap for Savannah Highmane.
- Shaman: search all your AOE (Deadly Poison + Blade Flurry) and Backstabs + SI:7 Agent. Pray hard, cause even if u stabilize and control the board, u dont have taunts to prevent doomhammer with burst spells damage. So start racing them ASAP.
- Priest : Backstab or Deadly Poison forNorthshire Cleric,Sap for Velen's Chosen, then look for your 4 drops. U can even keep Gadgetzan Auctioneer in this matchup.
- Mage : Consider tempo, keep Backstab, Eviscerate for Flamewaker, u will need ur flurry soon, but dont keep it if u have some other early game.
- Warrior : look for 4 drops, be greedy in this match up, can keep Emperor Thaurissan, Gadgetzan Auctioneer.
- Rogue (keep in the exact same order) :Violet Teacher, Tomb Pillager, Backstab, Azure Drake, SI:7 Agent, Preparation, Gadgetzan Auctioneer.
- Warlock : if u consider aggro, look at Pally mulligan, if u see more of RenoLocks in ur ladder, then look at warrior mulligan.
And now we come to the hardest part : how to play, execute and win with this deck.
There are certain match ups aside of just classes u play against. I devide them to 3 groups (aggro, midrange and control) and try to explain with some examples.
- Aggro. In this match-up your main target is to maintain the empty board on enemy side and keep your health as high as u can. Try to trade with minions and spells, not with your face. Flurry earlier (3 minions is SUPER cool to flurry against aggro, even 2 is OK). Dont wait with your auctioneers in this match-up, u can throw it as a 4\4 body to trade. If your 4\4 tanked 6 damage from let's say crackle or fireball, then u payed 6 mana for 4\4 body and 6 heal! that's how u evaluate and execute against aggro. Violet Teacher and good timed Flurry are the MVP in these games.
Step by Step: Dont throw early game. Stabilize board in mid game. Start racing when u get the board.
Secret Pally note: Try to get board before turn 6 and get ur BGH in hand to pop everything and then BGH challenger. It will be GG for them 1-2 turns after. - Midrange (Druids, Tempo mages, Patron warriors and stuff). These are the games when the key word is BOARD. This is when you have to be greedy as hell with AOE. Pressure as much as u can. Keys to win: drop Emperor on empty board, Flurry them away when they overextend, wait till MalyGod come out to finish off, Draw your board with Auctioneers when they use all their Swipes, Fireballs, Kill comands). In these games you want your minions first and spells after.
- Control (Warrior, Priest, Renolocks, Freeze mages). Most hard match ups to execute with your cards. First of all save Malygos till the time you are sure it wont die to execute/entomb,siphon soul! Dont overextend to be weak to flamestrikes, hellfires, brawls, lightbombs. 2 minions is ENOUGH for you in these games. 3 is time to stop and spawn only Teacher's tokens. Make them waste their removals then throw in your BIG boys Auctioneers and Malygos. Count their cards and removals. Save sap for Doomsayer, Velen's Chosen. Heal up ONLY AFTER Alexstraza. Be GREEDY as hell with your own removals. In these games you win by card advantage and your win condition are most of the time Malygos and Auctioneers, so dont feed them for free.
Thank you guys for reading, maybe i'll add something usefull later. Vote up if u liked it and ask anything in comments. I will reply and try to help/advice.
rogue is one of those decks that are so powerful in the right hands.
if i see a golden paladin.. im like meh
if i see a golden rogue opponent. i am tempted to concede
Hi, I have everything but Malygos, and I really consider playing this deck but I don't wanna craft Malygos if this deck isn't viable in this new season. I have already noticed that some of my decks aren't as good now as they were last season. I just wanna have be sure this isn't a failure like when I tried TokenRouge... The reason I want to have someone to say OK for this deck is that I don't have any other use for Malygos than in this deck.
Take everything I say with a grain of salt, as I am a relatively new player and am still trying to get my head around this update.
First of all, there aren't that many viable Rogue decks, and since the update spells doom for Oil Rogue, something else is going to have to step in and takes its place, lest Rogue become a non-class like Shaman. It could be that this is one of the decks that does it, or it could be something completely unforseen made possible by the new expansion.
By the same token, it may be the case that Malygos becomes part of new decks that we haven't seen before.
I don't know what's already in your collection, but it may be more reasonable for you to build Oil Rogue for now, a deck that I have enjoyed about as much as the MalyRogue. You won't be able to play it in Standard, of course, but that's just something you'll have to take into account. MalyRogue, too, has obstacles to overcome for Standard, namely Antique Healbot.
And on the bright side, you'll still be able to pull Malygos down the road as he is part of the Classic set.
+60% win rate and very fun deck!
Very nice description, it is useful not only for this deck, but for building and playing other rogue decks.
Since you can elaborate well about rogue's play, can you please explain why Sprint is not even mentioned in your description?
And, except for mill decks, why Gang Up and Burgle aren't widely used, they seem to be very useful powerful and versatile cards for any deck, are they too slow?
Thanks for the information!
Ah, I would like to include Trade Prince Gallywix, is it too bad? How can I manage to include a 6 in this list?
Sprint didnt make the cut in this deck, cause Gadgetzan is a minion and continious threat your opponent has to deal with. In Oil rogue sprint is better, this is slower version, where Auctioneers do more work than Sprint.
I tried to use 1 Burgle in my oil version, but since more token oriented meta i came back to double fan of knives. When control rogue becomes a thing all these cards (Gang Up, Burgle and Prince Gallywix) will make the cut for sure, they are cool control tools, but not in this deck. Your 6 in this list is Emperor.
Thanks, while I was playing the deck I realize that too.
My win rate got higher with +1x Conceal +1x Edwin Van Cleef -1x Antique Healbot -1x Sinister Strike .
I've Tried some spells before and after Edwin VanCleef, but playing him as a 4/4 body after cleaning the board is being very effective, it gives space for your most effective minions. In most games I end up doing 8 damage or using Gadgetzan or Violet Teacher more effectively. It was a game changer, against some classes.
There's no replacement for Pillager right?
Sad story, but no, 2 spells for Auctioneers, ramp effect and extra mana for Malygos plays, you cant replace it. You can try with Gnomish inventor and maybe 1 copy of Oil, but it will be weaker deck.
Warrior is still the hardest match up for rogue. I can advice greedier mulligan, like keeping Auctioneer or Emperor, seeking for any minions to pressure them early, cause you dont need your removals that hard against warrior. Also, try to ping face every turn with your 1 attack dagger, i had one game yesterday when i lacked 1 freaking damage to finish warrior off and it was beacause i missed 1 attack to face. I didnt want it cause i hadn't mana to redagger the same turn, but it backfired at the end of the game :)
Thank you very much for the guide mate. Rogue is by far my favourite class because it has such versatile decks, yet its such versatility that makes the decks hard, and some times you have to struggle against your enemy's deck and yours too. So even tho I love rogue, my win rate with it, is just miserable and I guess this guide will kinda help me get better. Not to mention, Malygos is one of my favourite cards, not only for his effects but also because of his lore. Thanks sharovoy!
Much thanks for appreciation! I'm assuming to add "how to beat" sections with every class match up more detailed. Write please the class you have most troubles to deal with and i will try to explain and share my expirience.
Probably Priest and Warriors. I just can't seem to do anything against priest cos they have so much board control, but it may be something I'm doing wrong.
gotcha, i'll add it very soon.
Hit rank 7 last season, this season its just atrocious...losing to druids who play FoN without the roar. Feels like the weakest class right now.
i can say for sure, that it's the class that dont have an autopilot deck (maybe raptor is a one, but it's not that popular) and that's one of the reasons people call it weak; most of the time you fight against YOUR own deck, that's the most complicated thing with rogue. it wasn't too hard for me, but i play rogue since early oil version, so i have much expirience. if you're new to class or to this archetype it can be hard and losses are hard to deal with. but i can say for sure, if you learn how to use this deck it can beat ANY ladder deck (from freeze mage to facehunter, from control warrior to secret pally) and druids are one of the easiest match ups for me.
Try to keep sap, find an early backstab and then reck them with teacher, pillagers and drakes, later u just flurry them away while keeping your own board. they can have crazy hands sometimes but it happens to all of us. as far as you can bgh their Boom u will be super fine
i play both, seems like they are both fine, but oil struggles a lot vs control warrior, when this version has more burst.
which ranks did you advance this season with this deck?
it's a deck i made legend last season with, didnt play much this month yet, rank 9 by now
really? you have Malygos with spells, pressure minions in Pillagers, Emperor, Teacher. You have to win by card advantage, board control and good trades with spells and minions. You have tons of damage. I killed Pally after 2 healbots and Lay on hands and Renolocks, its not that hard
