UPDATES:
(19/08/16) Pretty much an anniversary update, midrange dragon warrior is viable again and actually a meta deck! Made according changes based on the new cards and currently at a high winrate again like when the deck was first created!
(10/08/15) DECK UPDATED WITH REPLACEMENT GUIDE AND MULLIGAN GUIDE!
(10/11/15) VIDEO ADDED THAT WAS SUBMITTED BY USER "CaffryTV"
Very high win rate so far, from the beginning of this season to rank 5, great for fast climbing. The initial winrate to rank 5 was truly 83% but since then has dropped to a still very decent 74% above rank 5 to rank 2. Will continue to adjust deck before its 100% finished but this list is currently pretty powerful and can deal with most decks in the meta well - especially aggro decks.
It wins with solid drops from early game to mid game, then finishing with some big threats like Ragnaros, Deathwing, Drakonid Crusher, and Grommash Hellscream. Its therefore more midrange than standard control warrior, running Alexstrasza's Champion, Twilight Guardian, and Azure Drake and the like to fill out the mid-game unlike control warrior.
Although labelled mid-range, it's also plays like a tempo deck and is similar in tempo to the Tempo Warrior deck that was dominating the meta at the start of the Old Gods. However it doesn't require good monitoring on your minion's health values to cast good Battle Rages for card draw, it simply curves out exceptionally well relying less on card draw (but nonetheless runs Azure Drakes and Slams if cycling is required).
There are a lot of things you can swap out to adjust your playstyle, for example an armorsmith, blackwing technician, or extra cruel taskmaster can be added for a for more early game control if you are really running into trouble against aggro (which you shouldn't as this deck is good against aggro, but if all you're running into is aggro may as well increase your winrate further). Taskmaster has extra usefulness in pushing for lethal and also being able to proc Grommash Hellscream for an even bigger finisher. Can't count the number of times I needed that extra 2 damage to push through a taunt, proc execute, or hit lethal to finish the game.
MULLIGAN GUIDE
General Mulligans:
Basic Tips: Try to get a good curve in your hand, but always try keep a 2 mana card that can help you control the early game, as well as Blood To Ichor. Don't mulligan for dragons to be "activators" for your other dragon synergies, as the dragons will come naturally unless you are very unlucky but if you mulligan or keep mid/high cost dragons on purpose it might ruin your early game. Just get the early game and smooth curve going, your dragons will come.
Aggro - Alexstrasza's Champion, Fiery War Axe, Blood To Ichor, Faerie Dragon and only Frothing Berserker if you have at least 1 other 2 drop or coin.
Control / Midrange - Armorsmith, Alexstrasza's Champion, Fiery War Axe, Acolyte of Pain, Blackwing Technician, and Twilight Guardian with coin or if you have other low drops already. In general mulligan for a good curve, so a 2 drop, 3 drop, and a 4 drop would be most ideal.
Specific Match-Ups:
Midrange Shaman: Alexstrasza's Champion, Faerie Dragon, Fiery War Axe, Blood to Ichor and Arathi Berserker or Twilight Guardian with coin and at least another of those earlier mulligans.
Tempo Mage / Face Hunter: Alexstrasza's Champion, Faerie Dragon, Fiery War Axe, Blood to Ichor and Arathi Berserker with coin or if you have at least one or two of the first mulligan cards already. If you struggle against aggro, mulligan for as many as many of those first 3 mulligan cards.
Midrange Hunter: Alexstrasza's Champion, Fiery War Axe, Blood to Ichor, Faerie Dragon and Twilight Guardian with coin and/or Faerie Dragon or if you have at least one of the first three mulligan cards already.
Zoolock / Aggro Shaman: Difficult to guess if its zoo or renolock before he even plays a minion of course but if you have either the Axe, Cruel Taskmaster, Faerie Dragon or an Alexstrasza's Champion you should be ok against either. Plus 90% of the time its zoo. With face shaman mulligan like you would against zoo.
C'thun Warrior / Control Warrior: Alexstrasza's Champion, Faerie Dragon, Frothing Berserker, Twilight Guardian if you have a 2/3 drop already. Generally don't mulligan for Fiery War Axe as its mostly useless in these match ups compared with other cards, but it may come in handy for removing acolyte of pain and preventing extra draw from the warrior.
Dragon Warrior / Worgen OTK Warrior: Against the mirror its pretty simple - mulligan for early game cards and curve so that if you draw or mulligan better you can win as you out-tempo them. Against Worgen OTK combo decks do the same thing but
N'zoth Paladin: Alexstrasza's Champion, Faerie Dragon, Arathi Berserker, Cruel Taskmaster, and Twilight Guardian if you have a 2-drops or coin.
(Yogg) Token Druid: Alexstrasza's Champion, Faerie Dragon, Fiery War Axe, Cruel Taskmaster and a Twilight Guardian with coin or you have earlier drops if you have a decent curve.
Dragon / Control Priest: Early curve, but you won't be seeing much priest.
REPLACEMENTS
Sir Finely Murgleton - A big dragon such as Deathwing (especially as we don't run any board clears) or a Fierce Monkey will do.
Grommash Hellscream / Ragnaros the Firelord - If you don't have enough dust to craft these great finishers, put in another big dragon like Deathwing or Nefarion as a finisher since you probably have blackrock mountain if you're playing this deck.
Malkorok is also a great card, seen some top players and pros play it, but also seen it without. The problem I have with it is when you're behind on board you really get crushed when a bad weapon rolls out.
FINAL NOTES
As the deck develops will be writing more. Will update into a full guide soon I'm almost finished with that on the side. I will still be checking on comments and replying them,
Also wanted to thank all the great feedback and comments, you guys are awesome! And finally, DRAGON WARRIOR IS 100% VIABLE NOW GUYS SO GO CLIMB WHILE ITS GOOD!
this is my dragon, what you think ?
do you have any update for this season?? i very interested in this deck and try to play it :D
thank you for this good deck
This deck is great! Since i never really got a great value out of Ysera and recently saw of devastating Deathwing might be... that card even got me lost games against BMing idiots. I play it that way.
Now that grim warrior is gone, would it be better to play chromaggus instead of chillmaw?
Chillmaw is still a pretty good response to paladin, with is legion of small dudes. He may even take down an Avenge-buffed Mysterious Challenger. Most of our minions are big enough to survive 3 damage.
Replaces for Alexstrasza's Champion?
Really? 200 dust...
Ive been running Drakonid Crusher in various slots to good effect.
I just played some matches with this deck and I gotta say this works wonders. I don't have chillmaw or alex so I substituted with chromaggus and Varian. Still don't have that shield slam so im working with 2 bashes. Really nice deck so far!
I just pulled Chillmaw today (Was really happy about it) but I've been using chromagus as sub till now and he was surprisingly good cause late game when your running out of gas so I'm wondering which is better Chillmaw or Chromagus
Kinda maybe cut neferian sounds good although Nef provides a good body
what can I sub for shield slam? Second bash?
Yes that would be ok for the time being, but craft shield slam when you can.
So, I have some thoughts as a person who pilots dragon priest & control warrior as my primaries...
A)8 Dragons really seems like a light amount to trigger a fair amount of cards (Champ, Technician, Corrupter, and 1/7 for Twilight Guardian). I run 12 in my dragon priest deck and still have trouble drawing activators at times. Plus, Champ & Tech really want you to have those by turn 2/3. In a world where winning 3 in a row + grants free wins on ladder, consistency is super important, and that just seems like something that could go wrong 1/3 of the time.
B)Running three 9 drop dragons seems risky, especially with no Emperor. That's three cards that say "I'm really not doing anything else this turn". With 8 drops, you can at least play them and then throw in an axe or armor up (which at that stage is usually relevant). And in the midrange environment ladder is right now, I don't know if you can sacrifice an entire turn like that three times and still win consistently.
I like the idea of the deck, and Alex's Champ is an A+ reason to do it, I would just like some more stability because streaks are what move you up, and this deck just seems like it poops out.
Replacement for Alexxx?
Thanks for the share :D ! This deck is really awesome lol! Love the Alexstrasza's Champions! They really give insane value which most of the other minions in this deck do too! Anyways here's some gameplay for the deck... ENJOY :p !
1) Acolyte of Pain in dragon deck with 2 Azure Drake? No. Even standard CW with much more cheaper cards cut acolytes. I'd rather run Shield Block or something useful like Revenge instead.
2) I'm fine with 2x Execute and 1x Shield Slam, but it will be much more appropriate to run 1x Execute and 2x Shield Slam with 2x Shieldmaiden
Overall it's a standard dragon warrior. And I disagree with some people saying that Nefarian should be subbed for Chromaggus. I played a lot of dragon warrior and Nefarian is a beast in all control matchups.
Yeah, Chromaggus is okay too. People just overreact to him like a quazi-taunt. I run similar decklist, but with +1 Shield Block -1 Bash. Not really a big Bash fan.
Yes guys these are some good ideas that I mentioned before. Like I also mentioned, I will be updating to a full guide when I have more time when I arrive back home in a few days and don't have to type on my phone. I will explain in it the common swap ins I do for certain cards depending on what I'm facing in the meta and if I'm climbing early ranks to rank 5 or pushing for legend. There are a lot of variables in this deck that is more mid-rangish that can help you in some match ups and fail in others.
Full explanations given in the full guide but here is a short version: The argument for acolyte of pain in my testing for the deck is that it provides, along with two blackwing technicians and a single bash, the tools to hold your turn 3 and keep tempo up which in all the games I've tried is extremely important. I often found myself playing either acolyte or blackwinng technician on turn 3 and doing really well with playing on curve in general. When I don't draw either - the feeling is horribel and clunky, same as if I didn't draw well for any midrange deck. Now imagine if I had to rely on drawing only technician by turn 3. Armoring up and passing isn't terrible in warrior, but worse in this type of deck compared to control warr.
But of course replacing the acolyte with another shield slam and a bash, or a revenge etc is good, also I tested with 1 acolyte 1 cruel taskmaster and that seems great too against aggro. But there are ups and downs for every swap in. The deck list now is just the more consistent one that I have experienced now but I will be updating and adjusting it along with the full guide soon.
Keep up the great comments and feedback and criticism, this is what makes hearthstone and deck building awesome.
How does this deck/dragon warrior do on ladder overall? How does this stack up compared to control warrior?
