Hey Hearthstoners!
I have seen Reynad's dragon priest the other day and it inspired me to build a dragon priest based on his list. Reynad is a very skilled player and what I noticed is that he is very skilled in piloting tempo decks such as zoo. When i played his version of the priest deck, it did not suit my style since it is more tempo based and once you lose board, you cannot recover, so I built a dragon priest that is more suitable to my style and more control based so that even if I lose board, I can have a comeback.
I have reached Legend rank quite quickly with this deck from 0 stars in rank 1 to legend while only losing one game against patron warrior. (The video below explains the card choices and also gameplay video describing how I pilot the deck. It also shows proof of legend.)
UPDATE VIDEO (09/02/2015) :
It is a long video but has interactive buttons to skip between matches so you do not need to watch them all!
BONUS - What to Craft in TGT
Mulligan
There are 3 types of mulligan on ladder and they are: Aggro, Control and Patron Warrior (I know patron gets its own mulligan cause they are that good)
Aggro
Blackwing Technician, northshire cleric, twilight whelp, shrinkmeister, and wyrmrest agent
You want your hand to be aggressive as possible so that you can fend off early aggression.
Definitely if you feel that your hand is strong enough to survive the early game, you can definitely keep mid-game to late-game cards like azure drake, twilight guardian, blackwing corruptor or even chillmaw for instance.
If you do not feel confident then hard mulligan for the cards I stated above.
Usually against paladin or totem shaman, I would keep Mind Control Tech in my opening hand
Control
Twilight whelp (potentially with dragons), blackwing Technician, twilight guardian, wrymrest agent (potentially with dragons) and Shrinkmeister
You will want as much sticky creatures as possible against the control match-up so that you can maintain consistent board control early and start to react against their cards during the mid to late game. Having these sticky creatures can survive common removals such as wrath, death bite, fiery war axe, and rock biter for instance.
Patron
This is probably the worst match-up for priest, but you need to play as aggressive as possible in this match-up so that the game does not stretch out long enough so that they can combo you down in one turn. Patron warriors usually like to keep all their combo pieces until late game again priest since they can't potentially burst them down.
Tips:
Consistently remove their creatures and try not to leave injured minions alive to combo with battle rage.
Play Chillmaw after Thaurissan to prevent combo.
In the early game, patron warrior enjoys playing Acolyte on turn 3 against you because they know they will potentially draw 2 or more cards. In this case
Mulligan is fairly similar to the control match-up
Card Choices
Shrinkmeister - I took out two wild pyromancers for this card is because Shrinkmeister can really help out with trading while also maintaining your creatures on the board and keeping them healthy. Also this card can be synergized with Cabal Shadow Priest and Shadow Word Pain to widen their effect range.
Blackwing Technician - This card is pretty powerful when played on curve and can potentially snowball the game with the dragon synergy.
Vol'jin - Since I took out a lot of dragons for tech cards, this card can replace rend and they serve a similar role in the deck where it is used to take out a threatening creature we cannot handle. Vol'jin has more range than Rend.
Chillmaw - As the meta is solidifying, I believe Chillmaw is a must play in priest as it deals with Paladins quite well and there are a lot of decks with low health minions, so playing this definitely helps against the aggressive match-ups. It also counter patrons, so that is a plus. :)
Lightbomb - Just more AOE to counter secret pally and with the amount of board clear and early game we have in this deck, we have a really high chance to win against secret pally and other aggressive match-ups. Lightbomb is also good to counter dr. boom, mysterious challenger and also patrons.
Sylvanas Windrunner - I just like this card since the priest has so many cards to manipulate her in a way that I can guarantee I steal such as cards like shadow word death and lightbomb.
However, if patron warrior were to rise up again, then Chillmaw will be a great sub instead of holy nova.
Was legend with priest before, so I somewhat know what I am talking about :)
Loving this... been having so much trouble to get dragon priest to work for me. You nailed it man!
I don't have lightbane so I replaced her with a BWing Technician which seems to work great.
The only other change I made is to switch out MCtech for a shadow madness. I really think it's a better card.
Hey man, thanks for taking interest with the deck! I am going to update the deck tonight that holds up really well with the current meta! Def stay tuned about 2 hour ish when I am back home!
LOL Definitely the Murloc Knight.
I believe Dark Cultist is a reasonable substitution for Lightbane, if not better. Overall, I believe Dark Cultist is more consistent than Lightbane, but Lightbane just snowballs at time with its Divine Shield.
The only real threats to this deck is either ysera, patron or losing tempo. Now, in a sense, you do have another way to handle ysera without vol'jin, so i believe an azure drake is a fine substitution for a card to draw into more answers. However, depending on how comfortable you are against bigger and threatening creatures, Rend or BGH is also a fine substitution since it serves a similar purpose as vol'jin.
hi, can i replace chillmaw for a second holy nova? i do have a lightbomb but i don't own chillmaw.
Really nice deck, I made some minor changes as to : (1) replace Cabal Shadow Priest with Faerie Dragon to speed up the pace as I found that paladin and hunter aggro are fairly prevalent especially at lower ranks. (2) Don't have Chillmaw so replace it with Confessor Paletress which I found to be not very useful late game (usually get removed instantly), considering change her for something like Vol'jin.
Had won me quite a few games this season, yet I found my hardest opponents are other dragon priests, especially when they got out their Ysera when I don't have Rend Blackhand in hand or coming up.... Still, the deck has a fairly good curve...considering cut off 1Wild Pyromancer for Fjola Lightbane.
Thanks for sharing!
I am going to update the deck tonight, which fairs a lot better with the current meta, so stay tuned about 2h ish when I get back home! I also believe Fjola Lightbane is a powerhouse in this deck that I tried out with!
Really wanna try this deck this season, but I can craft either one legendary (Chillmaw or Ysera) or 4 epics (2x Twilight Guardian + 2x Cabal Shadow Priest). I was going with the epics because I do have the legendaries from BRM pack already. I would like to know if you guys would risk the same or invest the dust to complete a lower tier deck with cheaper cards (i.e, totem shaman or token druid) ?
I dont have Ysera, any idea for replacement, Nefarianis good enough?
Take your pick between Nefarian and Chromaggus.
Try adding Holy Champion and Refreshment vendor in here it helps alot against aggro and holy champion gets pretty big with that extra heal. I also debated putting resurrect in but without the battlecries its hard to get the full value. Still for 2 mana, getting a dragon back is pretty nice.
Hello and thanks for the deck!
First time Rank 3 with this one and I think this is not the limit for me. But I have a few questions. I do not have Chillmaw so subbed him for Dr. Boom, since it also can be frustrating for patron but it's not even close to 3 damage AOE I also do not have Lightbomb so I run a second Holy Nova. What do you think about these changes? And I have swapped Rend Blackhand for Nefarian just because of personal preference :) I may still switch back, but I used Nefarian once and he won me the game)
Thanks,
Ava
Hey Ava, I believe a second holy nova is definitely a fine substitution for the Lightbomb, since you can synergize it with the azure drakes for a 3 damage aoe, just incase patron spawns in the ladder. If you have vol jin, he is also a viable substitution for Rend since sometimes when Ysera hits the board, we usually don't have a way of removing it.
and thanks for liking the deck! :)
Strong deck Hermies, love the in-depth explanation videos, enjoyed your older Oil Rogue video as well.
Hey LunancyHS!
Thanks for liking the deck and enjoyed my older videos as well! Def love the support :)
Heyo awesome deck!!!! What's the best replacement for Chillmaw? Should I run a Boom (for similar aoe effect) or a BRM dragon such as Nefarian/Chromaggus (to buff other dragon cards during the early/mid game). Which one would be a more suitable replacement? Or even KT? I am at complete odds here :/
Thanks again for the post, and the walk through!
Unique card, very hard to replace as it serves as a strong board clear and body. Another Lightbomb could work perhaps as it serves the same purpose, though your dragon consistency rate gets affected.
It's strange though because I personally don't think Rend Blackhand is as good as it was a few days ago, so even that could be replaced for something better. (Control warriors died down a little bit and the mirror matchup just isn't as prevalent for whatever reason)
I would replace him for another aoe removal or another dragon. I believe Chromaggus is also another great card to replace him with since you can potentially draw into more dragons and another aoe if you need it.
I tested a lot of tgt dragon priest deck, and I have to say this one is by far the best! Great job mate!
Thanks man! Glad you enjoyed it :)
rend is bad no matter how you look at him
