Hey Hearthstoners!
I have seen Reynad's dragon priest the other day and it inspired me to build a dragon priest based on his list. Reynad is a very skilled player and what I noticed is that he is very skilled in piloting tempo decks such as zoo. When i played his version of the priest deck, it did not suit my style since it is more tempo based and once you lose board, you cannot recover, so I built a dragon priest that is more suitable to my style and more control based so that even if I lose board, I can have a comeback.
I have reached Legend rank quite quickly with this deck from 0 stars in rank 1 to legend while only losing one game against patron warrior. (The video below explains the card choices and also gameplay video describing how I pilot the deck. It also shows proof of legend.)
UPDATE VIDEO (09/02/2015) :
It is a long video but has interactive buttons to skip between matches so you do not need to watch them all!
BONUS - What to Craft in TGT
Mulligan
There are 3 types of mulligan on ladder and they are: Aggro, Control and Patron Warrior (I know patron gets its own mulligan cause they are that good)
Aggro
Blackwing Technician, northshire cleric, twilight whelp, shrinkmeister, and wyrmrest agent
You want your hand to be aggressive as possible so that you can fend off early aggression.
Definitely if you feel that your hand is strong enough to survive the early game, you can definitely keep mid-game to late-game cards like azure drake, twilight guardian, blackwing corruptor or even chillmaw for instance.
If you do not feel confident then hard mulligan for the cards I stated above.
Usually against paladin or totem shaman, I would keep Mind Control Tech in my opening hand
Control
Twilight whelp (potentially with dragons), blackwing Technician, twilight guardian, wrymrest agent (potentially with dragons) and Shrinkmeister
You will want as much sticky creatures as possible against the control match-up so that you can maintain consistent board control early and start to react against their cards during the mid to late game. Having these sticky creatures can survive common removals such as wrath, death bite, fiery war axe, and rock biter for instance.
Patron
This is probably the worst match-up for priest, but you need to play as aggressive as possible in this match-up so that the game does not stretch out long enough so that they can combo you down in one turn. Patron warriors usually like to keep all their combo pieces until late game again priest since they can't potentially burst them down.
Tips:
Consistently remove their creatures and try not to leave injured minions alive to combo with battle rage.
Play Chillmaw after Thaurissan to prevent combo.
In the early game, patron warrior enjoys playing Acolyte on turn 3 against you because they know they will potentially draw 2 or more cards. In this case
Mulligan is fairly similar to the control match-up
Card Choices
Shrinkmeister - I took out two wild pyromancers for this card is because Shrinkmeister can really help out with trading while also maintaining your creatures on the board and keeping them healthy. Also this card can be synergized with Cabal Shadow Priest and Shadow Word Pain to widen their effect range.
Blackwing Technician - This card is pretty powerful when played on curve and can potentially snowball the game with the dragon synergy.
Vol'jin - Since I took out a lot of dragons for tech cards, this card can replace rend and they serve a similar role in the deck where it is used to take out a threatening creature we cannot handle. Vol'jin has more range than Rend.
Chillmaw - As the meta is solidifying, I believe Chillmaw is a must play in priest as it deals with Paladins quite well and there are a lot of decks with low health minions, so playing this definitely helps against the aggressive match-ups. It also counter patrons, so that is a plus. :)
Lightbomb - Just more AOE to counter secret pally and with the amount of board clear and early game we have in this deck, we have a really high chance to win against secret pally and other aggressive match-ups. Lightbomb is also good to counter dr. boom, mysterious challenger and also patrons.
Sylvanas Windrunner - I just like this card since the priest has so many cards to manipulate her in a way that I can guarantee I steal such as cards like shadow word death and lightbomb.
However, if patron warrior were to rise up again, then Chillmaw will be a great sub instead of holy nova.
Was legend with priest before, so I somewhat know what I am talking about :)
Hi all!
I´m running this deck with BOOM, Chromagus and a single cabal.
Should i change any of this cards? I´m thinking about Blackwing tactician instead of the Dark cultist.
ALso, the cromaggus yes DAMM GOOD, but sometimes i feel that sylvannas would give me something better.
Can someone help me improve this? It seems impossible to beat control warrior....
Description and Deck do not match at all - beside of that, the Deck is crap as it is. Better would have sticked to the Deck you described,
Any replacement for Twilight Guardian? Can Hungry Dragon be a replacement?
Twilight Drake is a better replacement, but is still nowhere near as good as Twilight Guardian. Just craft it.
What are your thoughts on replacing Ysera with Nefarian. I feel like Nefarian is a faster card and is less vulnerable to removal.
bgh.............................
I find your Guide lackluster, but i have really high expectations. I do like the Deck besids Dragonkin Sorcerer though and your Video is really good. 1+ from me of course.
In a sense, the video is part of the guide, but I am really glad you liked the video! :) I don't like the dragon sorc either, but I hope this new list works better for you!
Not possible. The Shredder was buffed up to a 5/4. Shrink would make it a 3/4 and Cabal can only steal minions with 2 or less attack.
I really don't like the sisters. In my opinion they are too slow, and because of their legendary status, they tend to get removed before i can abuse them. What are some replacements?
Would you rather a 3 drop get hexed or Ysera
What would you say is a good replacement for voljin?
lol stop smoking. voljin and holy nova goes to 11 mana.
You absolutely need lightbomb, imagine Wrynn pulls out 3 baddies plus whatever is on board and you have no way for a board clear, press concede.
Even the Paladin or any speed deck still tries to flood the board and overwhelm, this deck is a 1 by one type deck meaning 1 in 1 out type reactions.Yes Holy Nova can take care of most of the board from low cost flood effects but the popular paladin uses secrets that retain most of that board and Holy Nova uses all your mana so you can't put anything on the board.By time the combo is available we are looking at big creatures to combat with more than the 6 attack needed for Shrink to work.MCT and Voljin do help but again they are 1 by one reactive cards this does not do enough versus flooding and mildly effective versus control decks.
Imo i would get rid of the Whelps, all they do is attack into get down anyhow then buff what is on board with revenge or get killed by weapons..Add Light Bomb and something else idk maybe a second Azure Drake or a bigger late game threat.
I agree with the lightbomb and have already made that change, however I will not get rid of the whelps.
You focus a lot on the paladin match-up and I believe this match-up is one of the easiest. In my opinion, it is quite easy to play around the secrets even with the mysterious challenger. If you teched in lightbomb, then you already have the game to your favour since it hard-counters mysterious challenger. Pulling out the whelps is a big mistake, since dragon priest's most crucial turns are between 1-4 and after that you can react to whatever is on your opponent's board. You can easily just pass your turn if you are afraid of noble sacrifice into avenge and wait another turn to set up for a better turn.
Secret paladin's are very linear and they are always the same, where they play aggressively and puts down a turn 6 mysterious challenger. To win this match-up, you just need to play around the secrets effectively imo.
-1 cabal for lightbomb is what I have atm.
I do not have Lightbane, but I do have Darkbane, should I add her or another cultist instead of Lightbane?
This is preference, however I do favor cultist over darkbane in this deck.
What are your thoughts on confessor paletress in this deck? I've been wanting to try her out and I feel it might give this deck a bit more 'oomph' in the late game.
I also see that you dropped lightbomb, and I didn't really hear an explanation for that in your video. I know that it's one of the few answers you have for Cwarrior/handlock, and I've found it too valuable to drop from my lists. I know you dropped Chillmaw in order to not lose your board, but you say the point of this version of the deck is to come back from a disadvantage.
Amazing deck, thank you so much, fixed the effectiveness gaps my own Dragon Priest deck had.
This is no longer a "dragon" priest deck. It's a control priest with a few dragons mix with a *chance* of a combo.
Lately, I haven't been able to drop dragon combos because 4 of them require another dragon in hand (Oh.. great) and 4 non-dragons require dragon i hand to use their abilities. (great..) so the combo behind the dragons are almost gone, resulting in having weak no-combo drops (5 cost 5/4 or a 2cost 1/4).
