This is a more midrange version of my previous full aggro cancer mage deck found here: http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/247726-cheap-tempo-aggro-cancer-25-5-rank-95-winrate
After using my aggro cancer deck to climb from 20-6 in no time, I hit the wall that is rank 5. And so began a battle with RNGesus which ended with more salt and close calls than I can remember. After my failure to pass rank 3 multiple times, I changed my tune to oil rogue for a bit, but came back to the tempo mage idea after long games and close calls became annoying.
This mage deck focuses on early game Flamewaker / Mana Wyrm / low cost spell tempo power followed by a Fireball / Frostbolt / Archmage Antonidas / Dr. Boom finisher. The Azure Drakes and Arcane Intellects should keep you afloat in terms of card draw, and you should be able to crush many meta matchups in no time.
In terms of mulligan, generally keep Mad Scientist, Mana Wyrm, and efficient earlygame removal depending on the matchup, such as a Flamecannon / Frostbolt for Shade of Naxxramas / Imp Gang Boss, Knife Juggler, or Animal Companion.
If you don't have antonidas, he can be replaced with Rag perfectly. If you own neither, you'd have to go with something like pyroblast which is really clunky in comparison, but can still provide killing power. Keep in mind nobody really uses pyro for anything these days so I'm not sure how it will affect results.
So far I have had great results, and will make legend by tomorrow at this rate. Don't hesitate to rate the deck so I will feel inclined to add / update it and answer any questions.
Good luck in the ladder!
5/23/2015 Edit: -1 Piloted Shredder -1 Azure Drake +1 Mechanical Yeti +1 Emperor Thaurissan . A few comments suggested these changes and after ~25 games of testing the changes seem to create more winning opportunities. The extra spare part works well with Antonidas and the 1 or more cost reduction on low cost spells from Thaurissan can create ridiculous synergy with Antonidas / Flamewaker.
5/27/2015 Edit: Finally made legend.
Change: -1 Mechanical Yeti +1 Kezan Mystic , just filling the tech slot with something more successful, helping me pull off an awesome set of wins to get me to legend at last! Good luck to anyone else attempting the final push! My final push stats from ~rank 4 to legend are found below.
5/29/2015 Edit: Have been climbing legend well
I am surprised that there is no Loatheb
The deck has only two secrets, using two Mad Scientist didn't seem that useful to me. I will try the deck for the first time but Clockwork Gnome might be more efficient.
I really enjoy this deck! ITs great but I can only get to rank 15 before stopping :/ IS there a way you could post a video playing this deck?
Im looking to change flamestrike for something else.
any suggestion plz
Great deck! Works fine for me. Got 9 wins streak from 13 to 11 rank. Now on 9, going to climb further. Thanks.
So the guide says ragnaros is fine if you dont have antonidas, but what about if I dont have Dr. Boom? Would running Antonidas/Dr. Boom be ok? Or is there a better replacement for Dr. Boom?
You mean antonidas + rag? And Dr. Boom is essential for high level meta games so you need to craft it.
You need to craft Dr, Boom for most decks these days. Antonidas can be replaced with Rag/Toshley/Pyroblast. Also, remove Thaurissan for Azure as he is used for antonidas combo. Maybe just do what @KozaQ666 did below.
why only two secrets... keep drawing at least one. so would you advise trying to fit in a second mirror or am i worring over nothing
I've had great results with two secrets. You always mulligan for mad scientist because of the tempo it provides so honestly I'd keep just the two. This deck's earlygame is super important to line up a finisher. I regularly have games decided with mana wyrms or a flamewaker clear combo by turn 4-6. For this reason I feel extra secrets are unnecessary.
It's a decent early drop because it pretty much forces the opponent to burn removal that would otherwise be used on flamewaker, as it is considered a high-priority target (because of saved mana value potential).
In general Sorc's Apprentice allows you to have higher tempo earlygame or burn your opponent's removal. If left on the board it allows you to potentially make insane plays with flamewaker or antonidas because of such minimal manacost spells. Just use it as an early body and punish your opponent for leaving it on the board.
get legend with this deck from 3 rank 0 stars
archmage and thaurissan works awesome
:) Pretty much how my night of grinding went a couple days ago. Glad the deck worked well for you!
to be honest, i found this deck is pretty shit, losing against almost every class...
You're right, i felt so antonidas combo dependant or dr.balanced at turn 7, absolutely no draw with AI, because almost every early turn you have to control and go out of steam when you get your minions denied. Also silence and bad draws like secrets in your hand you're pretty much screewed. Not to mention that 24/7 of your turn 7 antonidas get denied.
If your Antonidas gets denied at turn 7 it is your fault. Instead of rushing and playing it on 7, save Mirror Image or Missiles and play him on turn 8 with that magic. Easy.
What matchups are causing issues? As you can see above, I have a good winrate against most/all matchups. I do not find myself combo dependent whatsoever. Sure, your win condition usually requires at least a fireball and a frostbolt to the face, but certainly not always a late game combo.
Manawyrm/Flamewaker + removal gets you tons of tempo, control, and early damage to the face. Antonidas and Boom merely assist you in pushing through the last 10-15 health if necessary. You're a mage, you have 2 fireballs and potentially 2 frostbolts for face damage as well.
Also as Unclouded said, you aren't playing correctly if your Antonidas is getting removed without good value. I either drop mine on turn 8/9 with low cost spells or on turn 7 with free spells via Emperor or Sorc's Apprentice.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask. Remember, don't just spew out cards because you have them, make sure you get good value from synergies with your low cost spells. Mirror Images and Arcane Missiles should only be used outside of flamewaker/Antonidas if you're playing against aggro and need to use them to regain control. Try to have at least one 0-1 mana cost spell for the Antonidas topdeck in the mid-late game.
Btw, Daty - I'm usually trying to wait for Antonidas and 1 more magic, at least, to use my Thaurissan. Is that ok or should I wait for others/rush him on the field?
Usually if you have at least a few cards in your hand on turn 6 I would just drop him. He's a bit of a dead card as the game goes on, especially since you have to spend cards in replacement of not putting him on the field. But you should have at least one spell in your hand (Antonidas doesn't need reduction if spells are reduced).
Honestly, Thaurissan is the biggest risk/reward point in the deck, as there are a lot of times where I draw him and an Azure Drake would have been SO much better. But I did make legend with him in the deck and got amazing results during my final push so I'm leaving him in for now.
Loving this deck! I am at rank 4 now and grinding more. I've been playing this deck since i was rank 8 and with lots of winstreaks i was able to climb the ladder in no time.
But i do have one question. What can be the replacement for Mechanical Yeti ? I feel like there should be something more valuable. I guess i will try Kezan Mystic just because i face a lot of hunters and mages.
