Tired of losing with the common Priest/ Druid/Mage decks out there? After losing about 20 times with those decks, I built this deck to take care of him quite easily. I'm not gonna say there is no RNG element in this deck but this deck will narrow it down significantly and leave much more chance to take over the board and win the game. It only took me 2 tries with this deck!
Deck Concept:
This deck will take advantage of the current A.I. flaw of this boss: If you have a Kel'Thuzad + any taunt minion up, the boss will stop attacking with his minions completely.
This is why I've included some cheap taunt minions. All you have to do is hang in there (using taunts and mage stalls) and just play KT and a cheap taunt on the same turn to win.
Mulligan:
Aim for Sorcerer's Apprentice and Mirror Image. If you have them, try get a Clockwork Gnome or Mana Wyrm.
Game play:
Turns 1-3: Try to get a Sorcerer's Apprentice with a taunt to protect it. This will allow you to get early control on the board and stay ahead with Frostbolt / Flamecannon.
Turn 4-7: Keep getting rid of afflictions and slowing him down. If you can get a Flamewaker on board it will help getting rid of his minions. Try to get an Echo of Medivh out before his turn 7 Flamestrike to copy back some much needed minions.
Turn 8-9: Set up for casting KT and a taunt minion.
Dealing with afflictions:
Afflictions will be cast in this order: Green, Red, Blue, Bronze, and Black, random from there on.
Brood Affliction: Green: Can stay in your hand until it's time for a kill.
Brood Affliction: Red: Can stay in your hand an extra turn if you have to get rid of Blue, Bronze or Black (assuming your HP allows it).
Brood Affliction: Blue: You should get rid of this on turn 3, otherwise you may get a turn 4 Flamestrike.
Brood Affliction: Bronze: Not so bad as long as you have a way to stall / freeze his minions. (An early Onyxia is actually good cause it will fill up his board with cheap minions. He may also cast an early Alexstraza to bring you back to 15 life which can buy you some time).
Brood Affliction: Black: Get rid of this one immediately.
Dealing with Chromatic Dragonkin:
You really need to play around these minions (he has 4 of them in his deck) and never let them buff up. Problem is if you Frostbolt them they will buff up to 5 health. This is where Clockwork Gnome really shines - ping the Chromatic Dragonkin for 1 and let the Gnome finish them off. You will even get a 1 mana spell as a bonus to later fuel your Flamewaker, and if it's a Finicky Cloakfield, it will allow you to play a taunt minion on turn 7 and stealth it, ready for a turn 8 KT.
Cards explained:
Clockwork Gnome: An idle turn 1 play. You are more likely to keep your Sorcerer's Apprentice if you have another minion on the board. Useful against Chromatic Dragonkin.
Ironbeak Owl: Provides silence for his Chromatic Dragonkin (if you can't kill them) and Twilight Drakes.
Frostbolt / Flamecannon / Fireball: Single target removal that will energize your Mana Wyrm and Flamewaker.
Frost Nova / Cone of Cold / Blizzard: Provied a slow down mechanism while energizing your Mana Wyrm and Flamewaker.
Echo of Medivh: Play before his Flamestrike to help recover from it.
Sludge Belcher: Helps slow down your enemy and provide a sticky taunt on turn 7 if you have a KT in hand.
Loatheb: Play him on turn 6 to delay his Flamestrike and buy you enough time.
Emperor Thaurissan: Play him on turn 6-7 when you are in control (got some taunts up) - the longer he survives, the easier the rest of the game will be. Very useful if you don't have a KT and need to wait to draw it.
So why not include a...?
Mountain Giant / Molten Giant: I had one in my hand but it wasn't needed, so I listed some more useful cards instead.
Alexstrasza: Although popular against Chromaggus, I found that Alexstrasza isn't needed. Once you lock him down with this deck, you can just deal the 60 damage to him over a few turns.
Doomsayer: Haven't tried it but you can go ahead and try :)
Mad Scientist + Counterspell: This is used to counter a flamestrike (if you're lucky). I didn't want to add 3-4 cards only to deal with 1 flamestrike. If you get rid of blue and black on time, you can expect only one Flamestrike on turn 7, which shouldn't be too hard to recover from.
This is my first deck / guide post, I hope it was clear and that some people find it useful.
Good luck!
I feel like this guide is a bit misleading. I managed to get a taunt minion and Kel out on turn 8, only to have him kill both of them on his turn. He didn't use a minion - he used swipe... twice. This is a good deck in that it obviously can win (others have won with it - I haven't), but it is in no way easy and it is heavily RNG-reliant. You are misleading people by saying, "all you have to do is hang in there and play KT and a cheap taunt on the same turn to win" - maybe temper it by adding that he might kill you with spells, but hopefully you'll pull out a win. Upvoting because like I said, still a good deck.
Edit: After many more tries, I finally got it set up where I thought surely I would win. I had KT and not just 1 but 2 taunt minions. What happened? I lost anyway because every single card I was given from his hero power from then on out was a 3-damage card, meaning I took 3 damage every single turn before I could do anything to get rid of it. I was already halfway down in health from the fight.
In addition, he dropped a legendary that makes your opponent only have 15 seconds to take their turn. I didn't even get 15 seconds - the rope started immediately and I didn't even have time to attack with all of my minions. This isn't just an unfair fight - it's a bs fight that Blizzard should be ashamed of on many levels.
I am seriously beginning to believe that whether you win or lose these fights is more about whether their computer algorithm thinks you need to be frustrated at that moment in order to buy more packs of cards. How many whales are struggling this much? Few, I bet.
i cant win
Well made deck!
After loosing 30 games in a row with the Priest shenanigans deck i tried this one and managed to pull out KT + Taunt by my 5th try.
Warning though: Nozdormu can be a pain in the ass and i strongly suggest you silence him so you have all your time to think about your turn!
Did it on my second try !! I didnt even draw echo of medivh !! Flamewalker + sorcerer apprentice + chrommagus afflictions combo is purelly amazing !
thanks a lot !!
THANK YOU! Beat him on the first try with this deck after at least 50 failed attempts with the highly rated Buff Priest and Alarm-o-Druid!
FUCK he is hard. This is one of the hardest things I have ever done in video games period. In 20 years I have faced things rarely as fucking frustrating as this. Reminds me of doing Firefighter in WoW and many other RNG based fights.
Tried with Priest deck, where you commented like 20 times and got it with this deck on first time. Thanks!
